A few questions regarding Old school items .

Why do people pay so much for these items ?

Could someone give me an example of one and compare it with a current one ?

How can you differentiate an old school item from a normal one ?

An oldschool item has no inscription slot, whereas a "normal" item has one.

Old school usually refers to items from prophecies and nightfall, dropping without inscription slots. These are rare to get with perfect inherent mods (like 15^50). Sometimes people use it to refer to items that don't drop or drop extremely rarely (like req7 or req8 items from these campaigns).

With the release of Nightfall, Anet introduced inscriptions to fully mod a weapon. Items that drop in Prophecies, Factions, UW and FoW to date don't have an inscriptions slot, meaning the inherent mod can't be changed.

The chance of getting a 'perfect' 15^50 inherent mod on say a Prophecies Mursaat Hammer is small. People will gave good money for such a weapon, although it is in no means better than any given hammer from Nightfall, with a ''Strength and Honor'' Inscription added.

Bow with inscription and 'oldschool' bow.

Right . If there isn't any difference, why would people pay 1500e + 10arms (theres an offer for a q8 crystalline old school in high end) for an oldschool ? when you can buy the normal one for much lesser ? Do values of old school items increase ?

Oldschool is mostly used for item Which is no longer possible to get

As for Non inscriable Crystallines And r8 crystallines, those are no longer possible get

you can get inscriable r9-13 ones tho..

And ppl like me. and collectors. Dont wanna use any inscriable items, and only non inscriable (oldschool) and are willing pay 10 x price of inscriable one for non inscriable version of same item. Its just for Nostalgic reasons, and theyre kind of cooler.

Hope u understood someting from what i said

Because they're not buying it for the stats of the item, they're buying it for it's rarity.

The chance of getting X item with an inscription slot and putting a perfect mod on it is much much greater than the chance of getting that item with the same mod that isn't an inscription. Due to this rarity the price is much higher.

The people that buy these items are usually collectors and it is very possible that there is only one req8 old school Crystaline Sword with that mod still floating around and that is why people want it.

1.they are rare and don't drop anymore

2. They are req. 8 and non-inscribable

3. all new stuff have inscriptions and usually req. 9 or higher

So we got
  • Oldschool stuff that doesn't drop anymore (req 7 and unconditionals)
  • Oldschool stuff that still drops
  • Newschool stuff featuring the inscription system
With only the unconditionals being better because they haven't got a downside, but otherwise everything is basically the same.

Right?

+ most good skins only come "oldschool", so good inherent mods make them worth A LOT in some cases.

How/who determines how much an old school item should be worth ?

I'm not a fan of overusing the word 'oldschool' to describe just about every non-insc weapon. Instead I like to call them *Original* rares.
For example an Original perfect +30/+10 (vs Fire) Magmas Shield is a true masterpiece that's very appealing to collectors but there's nothing 'original' about an identical one that's inscribable - someone just spent 5k on mods and made it himself.

Value of _everything_ is obviously based on how much people are willing to pay for the item.
It's all about supply and demand, in case of some oldschool rarities the supply can be extremelly low since many don't drop anymore or aren't farmed anywhere as much as they were 4 years ago.

From seeing if other ppl sell/buy em and farm those areas, if your intrested in knowing some "oldschool" item value, u should ask from the Price check corner.

Have you read your own thread? Only r7 don't drop any more. r8 and uninscribables still drop.

Only req7 items don't drop. Other old school items still drop (req8/uninscribables).

Let's take the example of the Mursaat Hammer. You can get this in an old school version and a new school version. The old school (uninscribable) drops in prophecies. You can get an inscribable version from the zaishen chest for example. A req9 15^50 old school will be worth more than a req9 inscribable from the zaishen chest. You can ask why and you'll get the same answer that have already been posted: they are rare (supply/demand) and collectors seem to like old school items.

Yeah so, Some ppl use Oldschool for non inscriable. Some use it for items that no longer come. as non isncriable crystallines, dwarvens, serpents(tyrian skin), r7 items and unconditionals and few Nerfed mods as Prenerfed staffs (10/10) and Shiel mod 3/10% (nowadays 5/20).

Non inscriable(oldschool) items, as Non inscriable magmas shields, still drop. and are really rare, only dropping from 1-2 locations in prophecies
. So if ppl would start farming those spots, sure few would showup. probably causing little price drop on em. But for now, noneone rly farms in propecies and cantha, so skins from those with good stats are expensive.

This is completely subjective. What is a "good" skin? That depends on who you ask. "Rare" and "Good" are often used as interchangeable terms, which they aren't.

A skin can be both Rare and Good, it can also be one or the other. IMHO "Rare" defines the supply/availability of a given skin, "Good" describes aesthetic appeal in relation to how it looks; "Rare" or not, the Crystalline Blade skin is not a skin that in my personal opinion looks appealing, therefore it is not "Good", which is why I'd never try to obtain one for one of my characters, regardless of its rarity.

In a game with the amount of players that GW has vocabulary is always going to be constantly shifting, though it would be nice if the community at large could get a handle on standardized labels (which is all it is, to be honest) when it comes to items. This is why one person's "Old School" is another person's "Uninscribable" and is yet another person's "Does Not Drop Anymore". Words like "Good", "Better", and "Best" should probably be limited to things that can be quantified, like base damage, requirement, and mods for specific purposes. Even then, people will still argue.

So do req7 items really not drop anymore or are they just so extremely rare like Gaile said, and people don't farm the right areas for them?

I always get a chuckle out of threads that ask "what's the coolest skin" type questions. The easiest answer is to just point them to a list of every skin available.
