Expansion Eye of North

I have recently upgraded my guild wars game to the full version and i still only have access to the Asclon city main map and surrounding areas but that is all. Does anyone know how i can extend my world map to show other areas to explore such as the Tarnished coast and Char homelands etc?

Yes, go to Lions Arch. When you arrive, there will be pop-up texts to tell you who to talk to (in LA) for the quests to get you to the other campaigns. GL & HF!

(I'm assuming you've left pre-searing & all that)

Have you left Pre-Searing yet? Pre-Searing is only the small tutorial area of Prophecies, where you can access Ascalon City, and the happy surrounding countryside. Once you leave (and Ascalon gets destroyed), then you'll be able to see the rest when you zoom out.

When you reach Lion's Arch and you are level 10 or above there will be a new quest (from a npc near the fountain) that brings you to EOTN.

Not clear on what you're asking but.... the map is only exposed as you explore it. So, even though you now have the full game, you still will only see the areas that you have explored. New areas will be "un-fogged" as you explore them.
Also, the areas you mentioned are part of the Eye of the North expansion. You won't get to see them unless you have purchased EotN and explored the areas.
If you only have the area around Ascalon City explored, you have a lot more to do.

Just follow the quests until shit happens and then you'll have a bigger map.

As other people have said it sounds like you are still in the tutorial area of the game, which is a little mini-map all to itself that teaches you the basics in game play.

While its all very well for them to tell you to leave i've noticed none of them have explained how so i'll just fill you in quickly in case you're stumped!

The next step for you would be to follow the primary quest you will have in your quest log (under L), you will need to have chosen a secondary profession before you leave and also helped out Prince Rurik a bit.

When you have done these things your Primary quest will tell you to talk to Sir Tydus who is stood in the middle of Ascalon City in front of a set of large Iron gates. He will then ask you if you are ready to leave the city and take you into an instance where you join up with other people / henchmen to go and fight the Charr!

After you have done this you will be transported to the next area of the game which is where the larger game maps are! I hope that explained things a bit more clearly!
