Old AND New to GW
hellwheels
Hi folks,
Just going to "restart" my GW playing, has not really played since the first edition was released (and about 1.5 years following). I have really been waiting for GW2 but since I dont want to wait 1 year I decided to buy the "complete edition" since it's cheaper then buying the expansoins. It will arrive tomorrow.
So what I would like to get answered are the following.
1. I am leaning towards a Dervish, Do I install all games/expansions to be able to travel everywhere?
2. If I start with a Dervish, where will I begin? At the same "world" as Phrofecies starts?
2.1 If not, Will I be able to travel to the "origin" point?
I am really confused at this time, dont know where the caracter gets started and what I am trying to sort out is if there are any "gain" by going back to ... Tyria it was called?
Maybee someone can help me out?
Thank you in advance

You can visit all areas after you leave the noob area, which was pre-searing in prophecies. So you can take a derv to every expansion on the map, although I'm not gonna BS with you or lie, dervishes are pretty bad, well that was a lie, Dervishes are really bad at any aspect in the game I have played since they got nerfed after 200 crit spam in RA existed. If you are dedicated towards playing them, good luck.
1. Install all games/expansions and you are free to roam around after leaving the 'newbie' area of the games.
2. You will begin in Nightfall, which is different from Prophecies.
3. Yes.
Hope it helps.

As you have the first standalone game just add your serial key to it and you can keep the chars that you have. birthday gifts
Eye of North is the only expansion,,all the rest are standalone
So when you add your key you can create a char in each Nighfall..Factions
They all can cross over at a port city to the others and your char nomatter where it was created can play all 3 games plus Eye of the north

The three campaigns, Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall are three different continents each with their own map. You can travel freely between them once you get to the port city of the campaign you start a character in. Eye of the North (eotn) is an expansion situated on the same map as prophecies (but not directly connected), but accessible from each campaign from the port cities with a quest (once you are level10 or higher).
Each campaign has their own 'tutorial' quest line that you can't get with a character from another campaign. Prophecies chars start in pre-searing, for example, an area inaccessible by chars from Factions and Nightfall. This does not really matter (except if you want to access pre-searing of course), all skills and missions in all campaigns can be done by all characters.

To answer your question about installing... go to Guildwars.com/download, and download GWSETUP.EXE, run it and install GW. When GW is done installing, look to the -image command here. -> http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/-image#-image
Once done, you'll be able to load up a new account with the key from the complete edition, and begin playing with no waiting times for things to download.
It takes a long time, of course depending on your connection speed, I'd do it before going to bed, it has to download close to 3.8-4 GB of info into the .DAT.

Thank you guys for all the answers, will try and fetch my original version of GW, think it's in the attic though. Have a couple of "old" caracters there, think my main was a Fire Ele. Also, think I have a fire imp as a pet, cant remember if it was a gift or not.
So you think a Derv is bad? Ok has not seen them any more then on the youtube clips, maybe it was before nerf but they did deal some pain.
Any other recomendations to what char I should start with, loved the Minion Master I had.

Be it Assassin or Dervish, each of them is like 1/3th of a Warrior ... except that they don't really get to enjoy the competitive game or be even comparable, when it comes to utility, flexibility and sheer power.
When NF was released I liked both the concept of Dervish and Paragon (not so much Assassin and Ritualist ...), but the actual execution turned out in overpowered shit which was nerfed to death and became useless.
I still can't say whether the depth behind these classes is on-par or sub-par compared to the core classes. I guess it's easier to criticise what came after the original 'balance skeleton', as it naturally didn't really fit to the scheme perfectly, let alone well ... or simply because they just suck.
I don't know, really, ol' good Warrior gives me much more fun than either Assassin, Dervish or Paragon could ever give. I even find 'the boring Ranger' to have much more freedom and depth of choice, even if it's sure and certain boredom in pve.
Ultimately, it is your choice ... but as a Dervish (which I had once), I found it too disturbing to have to rely entirely on pve-only skills to do any shit in pve and to feel sub-par or limited in any serious pvp. To the core classes they are a nice synergy and addition, but never a requirement. Well, Dervish is different ... and those gimmicky dwarven/ebon/whatever skills just don't feel like they belong to the class at all, making myself question the entire roleplaying integrity of what I'm playing.
Somehow it turned into a rant about balance and op'ed pve skills, but you do get the idea. Certainly this stuff won't make much sense to you, especially after a long break.
I could see a lot of potential in non-core classes, unfortunately Anet never gave them a chance ... core classes always had to have their original, dominant place in the game meta, and the non-core hybrids - jack of all trades, master of none' - simply failed at that, as the natural consequence. Always less skills, always less flexibility and tactical gameplay, always less depth, always less attention, more mindless buffs or nerfs. Almost as if they had no idea what a class is about and how it plays in regards to other classes, besides how it looks.

If you create a Dervish or Paragon, you start out in the Nightfall campaign, you can eventually move to the other campaigns (Factions, Prophecies, and the expansion Eye of the North), but you have to get past the starting "noob" area first. Assassins and Ritualists start in the Factions campaign, and the other classes can start in any of the three campaigns.
If you start a character in Prophecies you have to play further into the campaign (up to Lion's Arch) before you'll be able to move those characters over to other campaign areas. However, if you have existing characters already at Lion's Arch or further you can move them to the other campaigns at any time.
Also, word of advice, don't let people on these forums or in game ruin your fun by telling you that you have to use a specific skill set to be a "good" player. Certain builds may be more effective than others but find something that you enjoy playing and go with that. When you beat all the campaigns and get to the end-game content you can worry about optimal builds then.

The GW world has 3 known continents. Each chapter takes place on one of those continents. On each continent there is one port city from which you can take a boat to any other continent's port city. Non-core classes (like Dervs) must start on their home continent.
The EotN expansion takes place in the dead map spaces around the first game's continent. It can be reached by jumping down a particular hole in the ground on any of the 3 continents.
Also: It is important to ADD your keys for the new chapters to your current account.
Also: Yes, it's true that dervishes are definitely one of the weaker classes. However, I'm getting the impression that you're new enough to GW that you can probably have a lot of fun with one before you start to run into underperformance issues.
To put that another way: GW is not well-balanced in that the peak performance for each class is not at the same level. Not anywhere close even. However, as long as you are not going to be getting anywhere near any of those peaks (and you won't be for a long time), it doesn't matter what you use, and you can just have fun.

If you are starting a Dervish, you will start from Land of the Golden Sun - Elona hehe, you will be able to
1) travel every where, all campaigns/expansion since you have them installed, at a certain interval.
and welcome back and enjoy the game!

Think about it this way: you can beat almost every single PVE Warrior with a Dervish simply by using a decent build, which they won't be. Play what you want.

Hi once again, now it's a new day here in Sweden and I am downloading the client.
Will try and "recover" my old account, but if it fails since I cant even remember what my account was I will install the new that will arrive in a hour or so.
I am actually going to try a couple of new races, first Dervish, be nerfed or not, I always like a challange. Necro is a race I liked last time alot, had a powerfull one back then, think I did good at Tomb of medival kings with it, needed a tank or so though.
35% downloaded, not moving fast here ~100kb/s..... not my line though that's holding it ut, must be arenanet.

go necro, war or rit imo, especially that there's not that much time till - hopefully - gw 2 release and having a main char with maxed HoM may be useful.

Hmm, true, right now I am trying to start up my oldish acoRED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO, BUT I cant remember what any of my old characters where named. I have filed a support file with NCSOFT but I dont know how long it will take them to handle it.
What, more then the pets given as birthday gifts do the char get? I guess my question is what are the bennefits of wating the hours it will take to sort out, rather then installing a new account??

hmm I did NOT write this "RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO" in my previous post.

I don't really see the issue with Dervishes. Yes they can do with a buff a long with some of the other professions that need buffing, but they're not useless at all.
I mean Dervishes can do more damage in Hard Mode than Elementalists more easily, especially when skills like Strength of Honor and Aura of Holy Might come into play.
Seriously all Professions are viable and are capable of doing every part of the game. Some are just more "easy to get into" for the players who only want to press 123 and win without thinking.
Pick what you think looks fun and roll with that.

Thank you for your thoughts.
Anyone care to shed some light to what benefits I would get to activate my old account rather then start a whole new?

Any skills so unlocked will still be unlocked versus a new account where you have to start from scratch, titles still there. I also think you'll get extra character slots not sure how many extra and how many you get from starting a new account. I don't think there's that much of a difference starting anew than using an existing account.
hellwheels
Well I started a new once since I could no longer wait for ncsoft to answer my question.
Will IF they answer, log into the old account and see if there are anything of value in it, will trade the things back to me then.

Well, having both my new and old account rolling again I found out that I had 3 lvl 20 chars. And alot of stuff. Will try and sell as much as possible and later transfer money.
The thing is, I cant seem to remember where the best market where, as of now I have 2 chars at tomb of primeval kings and one at Ring of fire. Any ideas of where I should head with one to sell?

lion's arch is generally a good choice. well, considering that's the only port city available on that account, that's really the only choice.
of course, you can try to setup two clients and trade with yourself, but might be too difficult for you to do. i'd help you trade myself, if you are available like... right NOW.

Back again.
Now I'm (lvl) 13 and confused....
First.
I did get an assignement to investigate a "crack" in the mountain, and from what I understand it took me to Eye of the north expansion? Big time monsters there, feels wierd to go up against lvl 24 monsters only hoping on your Heroes to save you.
So, should I have not gone down the rift? It remaind me of the tunnel you go down through in Prophesies.. To come to... Somewhere I have forgotten... Maybee when you leave the noob place... Ascalon? So I actually did go down, did run like I was supposed to and came to an outpost in the upper Shiver Peaks. Did the next stage and took myself and some hearoes to the next place, cant remember but some place with something Eye of nort in it. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Second
How do I travel to Acalon area (profesies maps) easiest? I am now back to "starting place" and doing the Island of the Dead mission wich I find pretty hard Even with my lvl 20 heroe monk by my side.
This is my questions for now, I guess more will come if I dont get "more" into the game, I found the original version more "self explanory" and straight forward.
And man I hate the magic scales, 4-5 of lvl 14-15's are a pain.

DONT listen to the hate on all the dervishes, The players for dervish are bad, but the Dervish are quite good...just not as good as other classes.
Theyre the only class i can realy have fun with being an enchantment heavy class, haveing to re-up enchants is interesting compared to the wariors *shout* smack them with a wep and get adremaline and shout again...
If you go dervish get to lvl 10 and go to eye of the north, plow through some of that and do dwarven boxing until lvl 20 then continue with Nightfall, makes it loads easier.
If you need any builds or anything just PM me in game.
