Be it Assassin or Dervish, each of them is like 1/3th of a Warrior ... except that they don't really get to enjoy the competitive game or be even comparable, when it comes to utility, flexibility and sheer power.
When NF was released I liked both the concept of Dervish and Paragon (not so much Assassin and Ritualist ...), but the actual execution turned out in overpowered shit which was nerfed to death and became useless.
I still can't say whether the depth behind these classes is on-par or sub-par compared to the core classes. I guess it's easier to criticise what came after the original 'balance skeleton', as it naturally didn't really fit to the scheme perfectly, let alone well ... or simply because they just suck.
I don't know, really, ol' good Warrior gives me much more fun than either Assassin, Dervish or Paragon could ever give. I even find 'the boring Ranger' to have much more freedom and depth of choice, even if it's sure and certain boredom in pve.
Ultimately, it is your choice ... but as a Dervish (which I had once), I found it too disturbing to have to rely entirely on pve-only skills to do any shit in pve and to feel sub-par or limited in any serious pvp. To the core classes they are a nice synergy and addition, but never a requirement. Well, Dervish is different ... and those gimmicky dwarven/ebon/whatever skills just don't feel like they belong to the class at all, making myself question the entire roleplaying integrity of what I'm playing.
Somehow it turned into a rant about balance and op'ed pve skills, but you do get the idea. Certainly this stuff won't make much sense to you, especially after a long break.
I could see a lot of potential in non-core classes, unfortunately Anet never gave them a chance ... core classes always had to have their original, dominant place in the game meta, and the non-core hybrids - jack of all trades, master of none' - simply failed at that, as the natural consequence. Always less skills, always less flexibility and tactical gameplay, always less depth, always less attention, more mindless buffs or nerfs. Almost as if they had no idea what a class is about and how it plays in regards to other classes, besides how it looks.
