This is my first post, so... hi.

1. What the heck are those little creatures and things that follow people in towns? Obviously I don't mean pets, because these show up in towns. Also you can't select them. I even saw a tiny little model of Gwen (that little girl from pre-searing) skipping around somebody. I'm just really curious.

2. When I eventually buy some other Guild Wars chapters, do I have to start new characters from the beginning, or can I use the ones I have?

I feel like I had another one, but I can't remember it. So that's it.

Those little creatures I believe are called 'minis' which are miniature items that can be taken out in towns whenever you like. Minis come from opening 'birthday presents'. Birthday presents are automatically deposited in a characters backpack on their 'birthday' (12 months after the month you created the character).

When you buy more GW chapters, you can have your existing ones transfer over and play in those maps, missions, towns, and quests at the click of a button. You don't have to make them all over again or delete them just to play a different version (Factions/Nightfall/EoTN)

Some of these miniatures are very rare and cost several millions. But there are many common ones that you can buy for 1k or even less. if you dont want to wait 1 year. There are also other ways to acquire them, like cantha new year event or gifts from Nicholas the Traveler. But theres almost a year to next cantha new year, and You can only get gifts from Nicholas when he visits the part of Guildwars you got access to. Even then its rare to get miniatures from his gifts.
You can have them walking with you both in town and in the explorable areas. They dont interact with monsters. they dont deal any damage and they never die. They are only for fun, or, in the case of the expensive ones for bragging.

The things that follow people around are called minipets. You can use existing characters to visit other continents after you reach a certain point in the plot. You will get a quest that allows you to visit the other continents.

Most information can be found at GuildWiki or Guild Wars Wiki.

They used to, my fault, I know any shouts affecting allies used to work (leader's comfort, and I know yourself counts as ally)

Thanks!

Ok well, I'm not that interested in the minis if they don't help you much. Kinda pointless.

And I do know about the wiki, I just didn't know what to search for since I didn't know what they were called.
