Not new, these have been going around for a while.
I keep getting about 3 from WoW and 2 of Aion (which I don't have an account for) each day.

But if your dumb enough to fall for those emails, then I would say your GW account should be the least of your problems.

To OP, there doesn't seem to have been an increase in account issues recently, in fact it seems to have calmed down quite alot.

I'm personally happy they finally removed the "change your password" note because i change it not long after it was added and I still had to look at the annoying note everytime i logged in.

I honestly don't know anyone who's ever been hacked in "Guild Wars". I have never even noticed a problem.

Dunno. Seems less then before actually.

I only know 1 person who got hacked (but he restored his account, with everything gone!). A ingame mate hacked him. A few months later. I asked him if he wanted to farm snowball dominance for me (on my account). Because we know each other ingame, we switched passes and id's. And played that weekend on eachother accounts. I did pvp on his account, he got me max ebon vanguard on my acc.

So it's quite strange, that he trusted me after he being hacked before. But if u talk enough with eachother, u can mostly find out if he/she can be trusted or not. BUT JUST NEVER DO WHAT I DID! It's very risky.

Myself and 3 others routinely use the same accounts. We haven't had a problem.

Could be related to the stealth anti-GWCA update, leading to many "yes... my account was... hacked".

For some of us, that is a bit too late, perhaps a few years too late.

There is no hole in NCSoft btw guys.

There are a number of ways people are getting hacked and it is at the fault of the account owner. Most people will say, no.. no it isn't but if you think pretty hard about it, it is. If a hacker wants your account really bad, he'll try anything to get it. They will stalk all of your online accounts and posts made by you in hopes of finding that password, hidden among the rubble not normally noticeable by ordinary folk.

I wouldn't be surprised if random e-mails (known to have a slight connection to gw) were tried with reasonably possible passwords at the logon screen of GW in hopes of getting a bite.

Well your wrong and uninformed.

I've played for close to five years and was hacked then end of last year. I have never given my password to anyone and have a separate email address then I use here. They took all my GW cash, ecto stacks, ripped my FoW armor off 4 characters, and so on.

No good reply from Anet other then don't give out your password. Really....no shit.

Arena.Net takes account sharing very seriously. Account sharing is how a lot of "hackings" have been committed (although most people back in the day used to lie about it and say "I NEVER GAVE MY EMAIL/PASSWORD TO ANYONE!") when people lose items/control of their account.

Meh... I've reported a few people who openly admitted to account sharing in local chat and they got their suspension. I just hope they learn that account sharing is a very big no no and is a sure way to compromising one's account.

He wouldnt have asked anything next. He would have told you to go and talk to High Priest Zhang in Great temple of Balthazar. He would then grant you 50reward points which can then be used to get 10 zaishen keys.
It is quite old now, and reason of it is the retirement of Xunlai Tournament House.

Can I ask why you report them?
I mean they don't hurt you, or do anything that messes with your fun.
Sure it's dumb and stupid and all that, but why mess with their fun, when in most cases people sharing accounts don't have to worry about anything.

Long time ago, a good friend of mine knew the login of my secondary account.
He used to play on that account and I almost never did, he leveled a warrior for me and everything went well.
Up until recently my little brother also knew the login of my secondary account and he played when I wasn't on the pc and leveled a dervish, I didn't have any problem with that either.

I have only gotten hacked through my own stupidity when I downloaded a mod for GW from this forum itself.

Why report people for violations of the EULA?

So that they stop violating the EULA. I report scammers. I report people who buy/sell accounts. I report people with blatantly vulgar/racist names. I report those who admit to exploiting.

Gonna share accounts? Keep that information to yourself. Making that information public only proves to people that your account is weakly protected. Social engineering has a far greater chance of working on you/your friends.

So reporting account sharing violators is doing support a favor. They can ban your account and not have to deal with the far more time consuming "I got hacked" support request that you will invariably send in the future.

You agree to the EULA to play. You also agree to the penalties for violating the EULA. So if you are going to violate the EULA, you should be prepared to pay the consequences for the violations.

Scammers affect your game, people who buy/sell accounts are most of the time trying to scam you.Vulgar and Racist names obviously affect your play enjoyment if you are that insecure about your race/gender/country of origin/anatomy.Exploiters also affect your enjoyment.

Can you tell me how Sharers affect your enjoyment of the game, or are you just so angry at the world that you would go to the autorities for every little thing.

Are you gonna report that 3 year old that had to go to the bathroom but couldn't hold it until he got home, which mom decided to let him use the toilet in the woods, for exhibitionist and lewd behavior? That has got to be pretty sad.

Yes the people that do that are stupid, So what? They will get their accounts hacked they will cry, they will whine , they will quit the game can you tell me how knowing that a person shares his account has any affect on you besides your conscience going bezerk for nothing.

It probably doesn't help support, the ban will not be permanent and the people will be back, probably still sharing their accounts. You just gave support one more load of work. The people will most likely be hacked and locked down and contact support for help and get their account back and be told by support to "not share again" but the persons will keep doing it because the alternative, telling your friend no, hes not allowed to play on your account, because Anet doesn't want you to, will be more likely viewed as you being an ass and not wanting to let that friend play just because you don't want to, then viewed as you wanting to follow the rules.

Do you really have another option when confronted with the EULA?No, you don't you either play the game and accept any junk rule we throw at you, or you don't play the game and have fun playing with your fingers.

The EULA is not the law, unlike with the law you do not have any powers into what goes into the eula, you can not vote for the person or for the amendment that you wish to be seen in power.

Do you really think that if most people really had a chance to choose what parts of the EULA they agree to and/or if they really agree with what is in it, they would happily agree and shut up?

There have definitly been waves of accounts being and hacked and reported here on guru, there is a lengthy thread on riverside, and on Incgamers.
There is also a thread in which is explained that the NC Soft master account URL could be manipulated.
There is a still ongoing investigation by Anet/NC Soft so it would be ignorant to think there isn't a hacking problem.

And ofcourse there is a lot of downplaying of people like "they probably shared their pw" or "they are stupid enough to have a 1234 pw" or "they shared the info in GW"

I trust that there are enough cases in which this all is true but howabout the other ones, the ppl that actually do use their brain and do all in their power to protect the account they have worked on for so long ? Well there are enough of them that have been hacked aswell.

This is not to fire up the discussion on how they do it, there are enough threads and investigations going on about that, this is about the ignorant downplaying of a situation that actually exists.

Relevant to your situation or not, people who share accounts may deprive ANet with additional revenue. As an example, a brother who got his account as a gift and his sister who played a couple of times a week on his account. Following the EULA would mean she had her own account. ArenaNet get 2 account purchases rather than 1.

/uninstall. Contact support for help with a refund. Not heard of anyone doing it but theoretically possible. The EULA may not be "legal" but you are playing a game on private servers, same way this is a private forum. We have rules to meet our legal obligations and also to make it clear whats acceptable behaviour and not - same as Guild Wars does. Theirs are for the most part "don't destroy our business interests and don't be rude or destroy the game for other players".

@tasha, yeah I mean to put that part in my post."Do I really have to buy an account for every friend I let play?"

Of course according to the EULA the answer is yes and means Anet get more money, but that is realistically stupid and not gonna happen.

You understand what I was saying about the EULA so I don't have to comment further on that.

I guess I had.have an issue with the EULA being used as "the word of god" kinda of thing.(I am not religious,I just used it so people understand what i mean)

Hint: hackers will attempt to use usernames/passwords for several games.

Say, if you register on eve online fan-forums with your universal login/password, any RMT account harvesting company will try it on your EVE account, of course, but they will also try it on many other online games on grounds that it has good chance to work and checking it costs nothing.

How Do I know? I used same name/password for my mule account as on gwo forums. GWO had security lapse and someone got acc/pass list, I got account pass change email and GW mule got raided (of course) and then something strange has happened: few months later, I got support email from EVE online support that my (trial) account was accessed by RMT account harvesters and got banned for my protection. The very same RMTers that got taste of my GW junk.

Aparently, someone got smart idea that mmo-player might actually play more than one MMO.

Lesson here? Even if you think that something is junk that you do not care about slightest, still put effort and make up new password. Even if you have to physically write it down. Because, and here is bad news: Your computer is not the only thing that can get hacked. You never have to get conned by phishing email or someone ingame or get malware on your computer. There are other, very juicy targets (fansites).

You can get 10 free zkeys from the high priest in GTOB. It is to make up for the Xunlai Tournament House blunder. I suggest wiking or asking around GTOB for details. Itz EZ to get... GL!!

As far as hackers go. There are plenty of programs that will ferret out passwords etc.. sometimes you can't do anything about it. But that doesnt mean it still doesnt pay to be extra carefull. ~Temp

Great tip there, I myself have played a couple of games, where I though I was not gonna play the game after the first week anyways, so no use trying to come up with a good pass, so I used something stupid.I have ended up liking the games and sticking with them.

If someone of you has programming skills could make a bot to send loads of fake username/passwords combos to the phising pages, this way the hackers must waste their time separating legitimate logins from fake ones.

Oh that would be so funny to see - the phishers with a few thousand fake logins wasting their time
If anyone remembers the old days of msn chatnetwork and the weekends when you got invaded by pornbot scripts who used to appear as normal chatters and the problems it caused - we used to have bots that used to kick and ban then upon links , you could easily ban a few hundred in 1 night and was real bad at times - but gw is slowly creeping that way as its getting annoying now with gold/account sellers and now even ones asking for wow accounts - thought this was gw not wow lol.

Is it possible for anet to setup an ingame security measure where with help from players we screenshot any gold/account sellers with their ad and anets sets a routine that logs those sites and auto bans anyone advertising them - could also show up on an alert bit to anet staff when ads are passed

Autobans are dangerous and should be avoided at all cost, the risks and downside are just too big.

There are legitimate reasons for posting a gold selling website, say I was talking to my guildies and told them "lol this idiot in GtoB was spamming me offering free accounts if i just went to xyz.com and filled in my account info"

Or take this example, Gaile pops into the game at LA and starts talking to people. Some innocent annoyed at the spam guy says to gaile: "hey gaile can you please ban the people from abc.info?"

It also leads to a slippery road to censorship which is always bad.

Account sharers can affect my game enjoyment. They are part of the reason I have to enter my characters name to access the game now. Sure, not the only reason but lax account security is indeed one of the major forces in "hacking".

You answered the question immediately. They get hacked, cry, whine, quit...

You however forgot to mention that they will contact support and support will then have to research the situation, determine the truth, and make choices on restoring the account.

Instead if I get their account banned/suspended, the support can simply see in the notes on the account that they were banned/suspended for account sharing and tell them: "Sorry, your account was not "hacked". Your account was banned for account sharing."

Much quicker. Support is not overloaded with bullcrap requests for help due to "hacking".

Quote:

If an account is shared, and they get a suspension for sharing the account, what makes you think that a later support request due to "hacking" will get anything beyond: "Sorry, your account was marked as a shared account. The account is now permabanned. Thank you for bringing this to our attention."

If your relationship with your "friends" is so shallow that they will be mad at you for taking away access to YOUR account then perhaps you should re-evaluate your friends.

Quote:

Exactly. That's your choice. Accept the EULA and the rules or don't play. You got it now. Simple isn't it? Don't violate the EULA if you want to play. Quite simple. Is it sinking in now?

Quote:

Moot point.

The EULA exists. You have no control over it other than to not play. Doesn't matter what you do or do not agree with. You are bound by it. Part of that EULA is to not share accounts.

Stop being a retard and keep any account sharing to yourself. Then you wouldn't have anything to worry about with people like myself now would you...

A good theory, but I think you'll find they will also be using bots to check the logins. Could slow them down though.

ive been getting the same thing for a month now. ive never played WoW and get 2-3 emails a day saying various different things trying to get me to click on a fake link. i get about 1-2 a week for Aion too. funny thing is i use to have an Aion account but it was attached to a different email addy. i read my emails on the web, nothing is downloaded to my PC. when you put your mouse pointer over the link to the WoW stuff its pretty clear its fake or if you click view headers in the email you will see they are coming from hotmail email accounts. all these emails are picked up by the spam filter, i clear out that folder once a week when i need a good laugh after checking to be sure its all junk mail.
