Difference between wolf pets...
GLAJMAN
Is there any difference between a white wolfs, black wolfs or plain ol' pre searing gray wolf?
ShadowsRequiem
nope, only difference is the color of the pet or how the pet evolves (3 different types).

And any of those wolves can evolve each way.

Tnx for the quick answers! I will try and raise a dire black wolf...

Keep in mind that if you don't succeed at getting the Dire evolution naturally, you can take your wolf to the Zaishen Menagerie once it's max level and (assuming you didn't get the Elder evolution) unlock all evolutions of that animal.
Then just turn it in and get the one you want. ^ ^

OHHHH!!!
for Dire pet I found a Killer way, slow but very very Effective for DIRE.
Here is what I did.
Borials Station in Eye of the North. I killed Snow Wurms in Hard mode. I used a Scroll (the 10 minute one) and took my JORA (a Meele toon) with me.
Leaveling my Rainbow Phoenix was easy. I sent in Jora first with my pet on heal, then released the pet once Jora started to take damage.
As I went MONK I slapped on Strength of Honor on my pet and away the two went. I of course had ROJ and Pain Inverter for very very fast kills.
My phoenix did die 4 or 5 times but I NEVER healed it or Res'd it. I just mapped out.
The Wiki says that Dire is a result of dealing MORE damage than taking. So by sending my Jora in first taking the damage the pet was free to assult the wurms at an amazing 38-45 damage a hit in hard mode to a lvl 30 Snow wurm.
This will take an evening but its totally works even with deaths.

You wasted your scrolls then, unless you wanted the extra XP for yourself. Pets are not affected by scrolls, shrine bounties, or any other XP bonuses.

You can get a pet from lvl 5 to lvl 20 in four runs of grawl farming in Whitmans Folly in nm. Go Rt/R, bring comfort animal (with pet of choice) and load the standard SoS build to fill remaining 7 slots. Takes an hour or two at the most, but don't expect particularly good drops. You end up with a hearty lvl 20 pet, but at the menagerie that will unlock the other evolutions, including dire.
