CourseLanguage
I was wondering if anyone new if arena net were going to keep up/merge there gw 1 servers when gw 2 comes out.
Amadei
The Guild Wars servers will be running as long as there are people playing, they've said.
CourseLanguage
do you think there will be people still playing?

Obviously there will be theres always people who like oldschool or wont like the GW2 changes.
Happy
ofc there will still be people playing, there are still people playing EverQuest (1) and Lineage (1) years after there respective sequels came out, hell I've got a buddy that still plays Ultima Online on occasion
Bristlebane

1. Guild Wars is a game designed with casual play in mind. Therefore, most people also play something else as time away from GW is not penalized.
2. GW and GW2 are two different games with completely different game play and, possibly, GW2 won't be liked by some players.
3. The Hall of Monuments, which connects the two games, can continue to be updated after GW2 is released.
4. Guild Wars is a great game. The complaints mainly come from people who have been playing it for years. New players and older ones back from breaks will keep the servers busy for quite a while.

I will still play for at least 5 years (when I spend for a game it has to really last a loooooooong time) aned I know about other people who will do. I just hope it will be enough people to keep the servers on. But, as others stated, there's still people playing very old games. Also things like the first NWN and RO
Fusylum
Ill still play

GW will be around at least another five years after release of GW2, probably forever.
Another thing to keep in mind is that all of the wonderful GW2 features will increase system requirements for players. So GW will remain as the game you play if your computer will not support GW2.
Besides which, publishers would always rather sell two games rather than just one.

i'm absolutely sure that anet will think of a way(s) to make us play GW1 when GW2 is out.

I will still be playing the original as I will probably not be physically able to play the new game (lots of video games make me very ill to watch--vertigo stuff)....so I will still be here.

I'll be playing for a while definetley, i like the feel of Guild wars. and although i haven't played it yet, GW2 seems to lose that feel. It really is a completely different game .
anywho, they should be keeping up servers for a long time. Theres the festivals and the world of tyria in it's original form

It's almost a definite that many people will still play guild wars post guild wars 2 and may be even more so after guild wars 2. I mean, I'm sure we all know guild wars 2 will be a big hit similar to guild wars 1 was/is and the many players that it brings who didn't play the original will have a high chance of wanting to experience the story 250 years before their guild wars 2 characters time.

I'm more than sure you will still see people in the original Guild Wars once GW2 launches, for the simple fact that the bandagoners who start with GW2 and not 1 will have absolutley no Idea WTF is going on an will want the GW1 bonuses that go into GW2.
Terrible Surgeon
It will be online for many years to come.

I'm sure I read that the chance to get HoM achievements will be disabled after GW2 comes out
Elephantaliste
You probably read it from someone who said it like you...

There seem to be a lot of old school games with servers still alive and kicking. But no one can really answer this question for you with any game until you see it for yourself one year, or more after GW2's release or so. Like anything that eventually wears out, you usually stop enjoying it yourself long before it expires. In the case of games, which can have an emotional or sentimental impact on you for all the time you've spent training your character...etc.., it'll take a while before you stop enjoying it but rest assured, you will stop enjoying the game completely before it even dies off.
Just don't get stressed out about these things, enjoy the game while your enjoyment of it still lasts, thats what matters, no?

For Roleplaying purposes i wont play GW when GW2 hits, Tyria moves on and so must i. The ancestors of my main character need there story told, so i'll grind out what i can with my main, then once gw2 hits. Carry the name over, thank my HoM for what ever bonuses i get and be done.
Greatful ofcourse, i gave GW 5 years afterall. Best game ever as far as im concerned.

More than likely folks like me won't be able to run GW2 on our computers. So we'll still be around to play GW1 with!

@Zebideedee - ArenaNet said that at some point they would stop letting the HoM give rewards in GW2, but they gave no time frame. I imagine how long would depend on whether or not the rewards increased the sales of GW.

And you can put money on copies of GW1 moving with the release of GW2 (If it doesn't fail.) Along the same lines, I expect alot of ppl willing to pay GW2 money for GW1 HoM items, so at the very least there will be people mission running and festival farming.

i first started to play Diablo 2 a year after it comes out.....it comes with diablo 1.when i go into diablo 1's server.no one was ever there.several times!.i guess there is a huge difference in the Good gameplay...thats why there isnt anyone at diablo 1 serve at all.not a single soul...but for Guild wars 1 due to the unique gameplay quality.the limitless class combo..it sure gets people back for more ...Unless the gameplay in Guildwars 2 is such a good game that everyone agrees which is hard to do but for diablo 1 n 2 wise.everyone seems to agree on the same thing....But really.Diablo 1 sucks
i did read about a year ago.that Guildwars team wshes that all the Guildwars plyrs would slowly shift to Guildwars 2 though.

GW1 will still be around after GW2 comes out - ANet has stated that - but, my crystal ball says.....
- Provided that GW2 is successful enough, ANet will stop selling new GW1 (accounts) and stop providing free trials.
- There will be absolutely no incentive for ANet to do any updates or add any content to GW1.
- Many of the people now playing GW1 will dump their now useless GW1 items - weapons, minis, ectos, gold, Tomes, etc., etc., on the few remaining GW1 players. So GW1 will no longer provide much of a "game" any longer.
- So, GW1 will essentially become a ghost town in which a few very "wealthy", maxed out die-hards run around "drunk" trying to get GWAMM on all their characters.

Found the link about the cutoff point on GW2Guru... bummer. The interview IS from 2007 though, so maybe they've come to their senses.

So the new question is how long do current GW players have to max titles after GW2 comes out?

I don't know exactly what the timing will be, but I will tell you that we aren't going to allow new players to Guild Wars 2 to go back and get those items in the Hall of Monuments. Our intent is to reward players who are playing Guild Wars right now. We have so many people who have stepped up to make Guild Wars successful and have invested so much time into their characters. The whole point of this [the Hall of Monuments] is to reward those gamers. We want to say, "Thanks for playing those one, two, or three years in our original game. We appreciate you guys getting into the game early, and we want to reward you for that." |
