Just like the title says, this is a suggestion to change or add this behavior to the merchant from the mercantile summoning stone. The Ghostly Hero does this already when you talk to him, and I think this would improve the usefulness of the merchant summon.
The merchant summon already follows at a delay, so it seems clear that he is designed to stay out of the fray so we can sell him our junk.
Edit: Allow only the person who summoned the merchant this control, if possible.

Last few times I'd used the merchant summoning stones he wandered much too far from the party, and lagged behind when we moved... your suggestion sounds like a worthwhile improvement.

He has two functions, Merchant or Melee fighter, wich work better this way.

far too many times has the merchant died in silly ways, or aggro'd with his random roaming while we were still trading with him!

sure, would be quite helpful in not getting him killed. although once you do summon him, it is when ur inventory is full, u merch it all away from danger, and the likely hood of needing him again is slim, lol. but still, sure, this would be nice considering the merchant's function.

Would you like the merchant summon to follow or remain stationary when asked?
-Yes
-No
That poll is kinda bad.

Like Eragon Zarroc said, I only need to pop a merchant once when I'm in an explorable to sell all my loot. Very rarely I need to use him again in that same explorable, so I really don't care if he gets killed or not.
Actually, I rather like him getting killed after he has fulfilled his job, so another Stone can be used by another party member to summon a more powerful ally.

How to kill merchant with toggle:
- Ask merchant to follow you to mob.
- Tell him to stay while we bravely fight together. (Lie.)
- Run away (or shadow step) and watch merchant die.
- Someone else summons some other thing.
I don't disagree that the merchant can be used in the fashion you described, but I am making a suggestion to improve him. His current behavior is simultaneously mediocre both as a merchant or a melee fighter.
