Might be a good time to change your password again just in case.

I don't care what the makers of Norton say. There isn't much to discuss here considering the source.

The 1 and only time I have ever had a serious bug on my computer it was tied into files from my Norton antivirus.
Needless to say I don't use Norton anymore nor would I believe them if they said the sun will come up tomorrow.

Norton lol.
What a bloated pile of crap.

Am I the only one happy with Norton?

I don't think Norton is the real story here (regardless of your feelings)... they merely stumbled across the info.

Norton is the worst piece of trash excuse for antivirus software I've ever encountered. That crap itself might be worse malware than half the stuff it's supposed to block. It's a miracle it has any level of popularity.
I don't know about other people, but it was actually set up in such a way that I'm incapable of removing it from my computer. I was forced to sabotage the program by deleting core files so it simply could not run itself properly anymore (which was not easy to do, since you cannot delete files in use and the thing also runs itself automatically and doesn't like you forcing it to shut down).
And this is from a version of it that was provided for free on a disc with my new motherboard
Basically, yes, they are the kind of people that would lie about that to get you to use them.
They would probably light your home on fire and steal your cell phone just so they could wait outside to sell you defective fire extinguishers at 10x normal cost, then if the smoke caused you to pass out, they would cut out your kidney and try to sell it back to you later.

It would seem so but fear not, you will get over it.
@ Rikimaru
I had the same problems just trying to get their pos program off of my computer even with the Norton removal program so I went to whatthetech.com and got some help {those guys ROCK!}
The person helping me had created his own program to completely remove the Norton files, it wasn't easy but it got it done so if you are interested go give them a shout for help.

Norton is trash and I don't believe a thing they say!!!

ORLY?! 2 million of us?! Well I'll be damned, my antivirus hasn't detected anything. MUST INSTALL NORTON!
Not...

Not...

I don't think the article is talking about 2 million of 'US', but just about 2 million compromised computers so that login attempts can be done from multiple IPs... without having to worry about a temp IP ban.
akio pwns
well, i havent had an attack on my computer other than stupid low level tracking cookies, and ill thank norton.
Not my fault if the cause of peoples malware problems is because they go to untrusted sites.
Also didnt have to change anything for it to run or other programs to run normally.

The database holds approximately 17GB of "flat file data" from at least 18 different games, including roughly 60,000 Aion accounts, 210,000 World of Warcraft accounts, two million NCsoft accounts (shared across multiple games like Lineage 2, Guild Wars and City of Heroes) and 16 million Wayi Entertainment accounts |

Norton is far from good protection you would be far better with an ESET free trial or kapersky, a friend of mine said this a week ago and I think it holds truth, in the future almost every computer will have a virus the only difference will be who is treating it the best.

I never had a problem with norton (til i had to pay to renew). It ran nicely and quietly in the background and caught anything that spybot resident didnt for well over 3 years.
GoF
It doesn't say that the info was gathered through 'US'. They don't need a GW client to login to your NC Soft account, so random people that never heard of GW may be infected, not especially 'US'. At least that's what I understood from the article, English isn't my mother tongue

You know reading that over again, the fact they had Aion listed separately. They have 2 million PlayNC accounts. Not Guild Wars, CoH, or Lineage 2 accounts. But your master NCSoft account.
Which means, since Guild Wars not to long ago REMOVED the extra security from our PlayNC accounts that this was indeed a dumb move. Let's all refer back to this thread: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/p...light=security Where they took a step backward with their security and now we find out that we are indeed vulnerable despite ArenaNet's claims.
Once again, let us unlink our accounts from PlayNC ArenaNet.

That. We all know NCsoft's security (tries to think of an appropriate saying) has leaks like a sieve in a waterfall. We just now know about how bad it is.

still doesn't change the fact that changing ur password everynow and then is a good idea. what better time than a supposed discovery of 2million accounts having there info stolen?

It is sooooo stupid but this will allow you to get it off computers in the future if you stumble upon them.
BTW NORTON SUXS
avg and ad-aware are by far better and there are even better versions of those. The key selling point on them...They are ALL free.

If anything, setting up a new password just ups your chances of it being noticed in any keyloggers that are hiding on one's system.
The accounts in the server are probably comprised of the outdated, already hacked ones from the hacking orgy that happened close to a year ago.

If you want to pay money for anti-virus at least get something halfway decent like NOD32.
Most of us average joes should be fine with free stuff like avira and avg.

The fact that Symantec found the hack seems to be beside the point. Give them credit. It is so easy to rant when something goes wrong, but we are the silent masses when things go as they should.

but yeah as others have said... it's not who found it (even though they just got lucky) it's what was found...

Nope. I use Norton, haven't had a problem with my PC in over a year since I switched to Norton. It's funny that everybody hates on Norton; but I'm sure they all use different AV software and claim "it's the best". Note that nobody has actually said what AV they use when bashing Norton, either.
Chthon
Norton is pretty terrible as an antivirus, but there's no way that they would make up something like this.
Now, the question I would like an answer to is this: Why, when WoW is more popular than NCSoft's games put together, were the thieves able to steal 10x as many NCMA credentials as WoW credentials? Oh wait, don't tell me, a fansite breach...

Umm... it would be proof that authenticators work actually. But maybe I misunderstood the tone of your post.

Could always use something like Charmap to enter passwords with the mouse if you worry about keyloggers.

People seem to be under this odd ass impression that they will magically know they have a virus if their av program dosent catch it...

Most anti-virus seem to be including more and more resident (active change monitor), so even trying to piggyback files tends to get noticed. And the number one source of keyloggers is third-party software.

Wanders how many of those are Guild Wars Account, how many were recovered and return to the rightful owners...

I'm still curious. There seems to have been a website breach, which resulted in a lot of hacking of GW accounts. Why didn't GuildWars (Arenanet) change their policy during that time to give all stolen stuff back? I mean, it was obviously not the fault of the user/player.

I read the article again and just realize that these "accounts" aren't actually stolen yet, but they will be soon when they know what to do with 44 million stolen account database, since no one know how best to handle 44 millions stolen information. I think this need to be made clear, it was stolen account informations and if the owner of the server containing the 44 millions account informations starts to use the database that they collected then there would be a huge upset.
I think it is wise to change our password on a regular basis.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the thread, and I certainly don't want to join the Norton bashing (despite it being a bloated shitty product), but I recently noticed something in Guild Wars that seems Norton related whilst looking at some screen shots of Dhuum.
Screen shot linked... my apologies for my poor attempt at enlarging the interesting portion of the screen shot, my Photoshop skills are lacking
