Okay, so first of all, I don't pve, and this is coming across as somewhat of a mystery for me. Let's see if you people can clarify.

Botting in PVP, I can understand. It's like cheating on an exam. You want to get an unfair advantage to get ahead of the curve. It's like bringing a gatling gun to a knife fight. You want to show off your leetness in front of your peers on obs mode, but you suck at the game, so you resort to cheating like the little baddie that you are.

Why the hell would you bot in pve, though?

Why the hell would you make a boring experience even more boring? Grinding through a PVE instance like the Underworld is TEARJERKINGLY boring. Good god, man, I couldn't even stomach the first 10 minutes of the Fissure of Woe. Why would you make a bot and sadistically WATCH your character go through something that's boring enough to actually DO?

WHY? I can't wrap my head around this. The game is boring... so you make it MORE boring by running a program that plays the game for you?! It doesn't compute.

At first I was like 3700 accounts banned for botting! HELL YEAH! Then I find out the majority of these botters were PVE botters. PVE botters? What?

And

I

Don't

Get

It.

It is'nt so they don't have to sit there and watch it. They set it up to farm, walk away for a few hours, and then get to enjoy the spoils of labor without actually laboring.

PvE bots were not used to increase your reflex ability why you were at the computer the way it does in pvp. PvE bots are meant to do the menial tasks for you while you are away from your computer.

Actually, I don't think you need to watch As it's an automated thing, you put the program on and when you return it's all done, whatever it was. Isn't it like this?

Botting in PvE also lent itself to gold sellers. example) Ecto farming bot...then that person sells ecto stacks $20 online. Actually a much better reason to bot than PvP.

There's also PvP bots that would let you AFK too, for farming rewards in JQ, RA, what have you.

Oh god it's worse than I thought.

People actually buy gold for this game?

Why? Why would you do that? You can get max stat armor and weapons just by playing the game.

WOWWWW

I think I'm having an epiphany aneurysm.

This is a whole other side of Guild Wars that I haven't seen, and I've been playing since the beta.

So they can buy the same stuff I (or any other non-botter) have, without actually doing something to earn it.

You kind of answered your own question right there.

Also applies to many of the titles and much of the HoM.

Myself I find it harder to understand why someone would use a bot for pvp.

You've been fairly blind if you're just now recognizing the audience that's willing to run bots or pay real-life money for GW achievements.

To address your general concern, consider the Hall of Monuments, which is set to be the sole transfer of benefits in GW to GW2. In order to get maximum benefits,
  • You have to play some PvE to get to the HoM.
  • You have to craft five elite armors by traveling to the right locations, farming up any necessary reputation or doing any necessary quests, and buying all the materials necessary for purchasing the armors.
  • You have to either complete Nightfall or the expansion in order to get access to a set of prestige weapons that can go into the HoM.
  • You need to purchase hero armors or raise pets in order to fill another monument.
  • There are only two minipets (Ghostly Hero and Greased Lightning) that you can obtain in PvP, as opposed to now 13 in PvE, and you need a total of 20 to fill that respective monument.
  • There are only five titles for PvP arenas, six if you include Zaishen, against a plethora of titles for PvE, many likely to be easier to obtain than any of those previous six, and there are also nine non-title achievements that can be logged that are all PvE-based.
It should be obvious that your best chance of filling the Hall of Monuments is to play a lot of PvE, which would make it logical for many people to try and bot so many of those rewards.

Why would you want to fill out the hall of monuments?

It should be more obvious the HoM won't matter in GW2. Jesus @ the people spending thousands of hours for a couple more cereal box prizes later on.

Titles and HoM might have also factored into why people botted, the lure of some unknown *cough* benefit *cough* in GW2, without the desire to actually spend the time doing whatever repetitive and mundane PvE tasks were required for them to obtain that goal.

Not all titles can be botted, obviously, but most can be bought (true for PvE and PvP titles) so botting a crap load of money while afk seemed logical enough to those lacking integrity. Not that many people would be buying fame when it's easier to just bot it, I guess...

You gain special things in GW2 for the more stuff you have in your HoM. we don't know what the rewards are, but people still want to fill it up as much as physically possible for the possible benefits you will get in GW2.
