How much is a lot of money?
Eviserator
I just started playing this game so I'm a noob and I have about 13k so I'm just wondering what I would be able to buy with that amount I don't even know how much that is. What do ppl usually have? Can someone give me some suggestions on what to buy? I'm a dervish/monk

As a new player just buy max armor from the crafter and collector weaps or greens. You don't need to waste your money on elite armor or shiney weapons yet. 50-200k is easily enough to get buy unless you want to go for the money titles etc.
Money is easy to make in gw as long as you don't spend it. Elite areas like DoA can net you around (non elite guild) around 60-100k every 1.5-2hours.
When you become more exp and start doing speed clears of elite areas and dungeons the money comes in.
Once you have max armor from droknar's forge/consulate docks/kaineng Center and max weapons. You don't need to really spend money.

Holy I'm so confused!!! What are elite armours shiny weapons and how do you get them? They sound so cool!! What is DoA and elite areas? What is max armour max weapons and speed clears? I'm a noob remember so I don't understand all these terms sorry!
Shadow Sin
Armor comes in two sets: The elite or expensive armor, and the normal 1k armor. It also comes in variables of normal armor, ranging from beginner to max.
On topic of armors, they cannot be traded, so if you made a monk named I Heart Toilets, and deleted the monk and made another monk named I Heart Toilets, it cannot wear the armor.
Your storage is shared accountwide, so anything you put inside your Xunlai Storage will be accessible by all characters.
Elite areas are accessible by getting attuned or by finishing a campaign. Attuned means doing a quest or a chain of some sort in order to get access. If you've already noticed the "favor of the gods" that allows for entrance to the Underworld and Fissure of Woe, two of the elite places.

A lot of money = When you can afford to buy 99% of the items in game without thinking twice about it being too expensive.
Pleikki
Well i think Alot of money is differend for everyone, Like for me 500ectos is Alot, For someone 50plats is, For someone 5000ectos is.
it depends on how wealthy u are, And when ur richer then usual = u got alot of money ;D

Benderama
yeah what pleikki says, i've been playing for 2 years (but i refused to go with the sf crowd) so i always averaged at around 100k, but i have too many elite armour sets, expensive minis e.t.c. which i spend my money on. but like everyone says once you have max armour and max weapons (which can sometimes be free if you have GOTY edition) then you don't "need" anything else. unfortunatley buying a load of skills at max cost can eventually start to dig into your bank if you don't have like 500k+ .
i'd like to hear about the
i could really use this ^^.

Playing exactly one year since yesterday(yay got a birthday present) And almost full hall I think I have around a couple of million but that is nowhere near in having a lot of money. There are people with hundreds of millions worth of gold. :/
Warvic
Depends on the person. After 5 years of playing I think 1 million is still alot. But now in 2010 this is not really that much actually. Because there are so many ways now to easily get alot of money. I'm not into money making so that's why 1 mill is still alot for me. But for people who make money everyday, 1 mill is nothing.
AlsPals
A lot of money is when you have so much, Anet may monitor your account habits.
Volo
go check the high end threads... when you can buy most of those items than you have alot of money
Darcy
After over 8k hours of playing and selling an Everlasting Tonic from the Zaishen Chest when they were new, I hover around 700k. This is what I consider comfortable, as I have no yearnings to own a super rare anything.
@Eviserator - information on armor and weapons can be found on the wiki - F10 or Help on menu while in the game or http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
The "Elite" armor costs more than the standard max armor, but doesn't give you any higher protection. Each type of weapon has a maximum damage output http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Weapon in an unmodified state.
DoA info in the wiki http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Domain_of_Anguish
Guild Wars after level 20 is all about knowledge, skills and vanity. If you have 13k and are new to the game, then you are smart and frugal. I have guildmates who are "poor" because they keep buying new armor.

Buy a cheap green or whatever golds you can find, greens are usually the best and the cheapest.
The cheapest way to get a green scythe though would be by simply finishing any of the 4 games, you get the end-game free weapon and on all 4 games there's scythes to choose from. Not that any green weapon is expensive, but with 13k only you should really save where you can.

As for the armor, no way around it. You have to buy it. With materials and crafting costs shouldn't be more than 8-10k depending on what and how many materials you need. You can also invest on some runes for your armor but they're not really priority if you're low on cash, especially for Normal Mode.
IronSheik
I've earned around 15 obi sets in my time and all were relatively easy to get, so to me a large sum of money is 15mil+

I think having 1 million gold is quite much. Any 24/7 farmer will laugh at this but I view it from a casual players point of view. I think few casual players will have 1000 platinum in their storage... Or 1000 platinum worth of ecto's for that matter.

I've got a little over 7,500e left after giving away 10,000e to a long-time RL friend of mine who got hacked via plaync and lost his panda (was back when the character name security didn't exist) and I still consider myself poor.

I'm starting to see why people dislike power traders.

I wouldn't worry too much about money other than having enough to buy basic max armor and runes for both yourself and your heroes. The thing about money is that you will always be coveting the belongs of the guy who is richer than you (kind of goes for real life too...). You will naturally accumulate wealth as you play the game. Regardless, just play the game in the style that you enjoy and don't worry so much about "keeping up with the Joneses".

Arrogant post if I ever saw one...

Thanks alot everyone for the comments but I'm just wondering how to you get basic "max" armor? U buy? Upgrade? How?

Prophecies: Max armor can first be purchased in Droknar's Forge
Factions: Kaineng Center
Nightfall: Consulate Docks
Eye of the North: Boreal Station
You buy it from an armor trader and it costs 1k per piece + materials
jonnieboi05
"Rich" is a point of view. As I have previously stated, I have a little over 7,500e and I still consider myself poor/average. Some consider 500e "doing good" and some consider 100e "doing good". It's all in the eyes of the beholder.

a lot of money is when you start trading in armbraces armbraces are worth multiple ecto. ecto worth 7-8k a piece
leaderwolf3
I consider a lot of money or a considerable amount to be roughly a stack of armbraces meaning 250 armbraces
armbraces being 27e each = 6750 ectos
ectos being 7k each = 47,250 platinum
is what i consider alot of money ^^
Now this varies to different people
The higher you move up the ladder the higher you can see
meaning to set new goals for it, after reaching this goal and virtually getting every rare item in the game, It has got somewhat boring
But now maybe i can set my goal to 5 stacks of armbraces
armbraces being 27e each = 6750 ectos

What is a lot of money" Each has their own opinion, but in a nutshell, when you reach the point that money no longer matters. When you don't care that the next person has more than you or you than them. When you laugh at people who itemize what they have and you no longer itemize. When a person asks for 50g and you give them 50k. When you are trying to figure out what to do with all your money, IMHO, you have too much.
Over the course of 4 1/2 years of this game, I have made and spent millions of gold. Not bragging, just stating a fact. I am now satisfied with keeping 300k to 500k on hand. No ectos or ambraces, or any other exchange commodity, just gold coins.

There are people with even a lot more (imaginary) wealth than that, but that's just overkill. But, since the game has been going on now for a couple years without new content, you run out of things to spend it on. And, unlike R/L, having huge piles of wealth does nothing for you in GW - you can't build empires in GW.
