DVDR drive , bad firmware update = Dead ?

Hello,

Few months ago I did a firmware update for my Samsung DVDR drive on windows 7 , and a few things went really wrong.

First, there was no firmware update software for windows 7 , so I used the vista one, and the *bugs* fest started.

The software was runnning fine and making the firmware update until it got stuck at 50% , I left it there for 40 minutes and nothing. So , I tried to close the software but it was not possible so I needed to end the process. But then , my drive didn't work anymore, I guess because of the bad firmware update I tried.

The first thing I did is to run the software again , but the same results , it stays stuck at 50%.

Now I have my drive with a strange name like boot or something, and it doesn't work anymore.

I was wondering if there is a way to fix it , or should I just get a new one?

Your best bet would be to find some DOS version of the flasher.

And you should google for an answer, although you probably won't find any right away you will find some forum that can help you better than us.

I'd try flashing the original windows 7 firmware if you can find it. As a rule of thumb, when it comes to optical drive and hard drive firmwares, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. I never update a firmware or a bios unless it does bring noticeable/needed improvements since there's always a risk when updating a firmware or bios.

If you can remove the drive, you could try temporarily hooking it up to a machine running Vista and see if that works (or XP, if you have the XP version of the update).
Or, maybe you could try running the update in Vista compatability mode (if possible) and make sure to have administrator rights.
Or, you could buy a new drive - you can get a bare OEM version relatively cheaply.

Yes , I wanted to update the firmware because of a dvd (AvP Game) that my drive was not able to read. Probably I need to keep looking on google.com as majoho said. I did that before but no luck.

@ tijo , there is no windows 7 version of the software at samsung.com, there is not even a DOS version.

@ Quaker Thats a good idea, I think I tried that , but I will try it again.

Anyway , I am just trying to safe the drive , but if is not possible I will get a new one.
