It's official. I HATE Elona Reach!
RaynaA
I have done everything up to now with henchmen only and the occasional help of my son who is still at level 13. I need to ascend. I did the Dunes of Despair. Now I'm trying to do Elona Reach. I've tried about 5 times now. Once I actually got the 3rd crystal and was about 3 steps from the gate with about 13 seconds left when I died. I am about to hang this up this is so frustrating. How do I go about finding people to help me? I dont' have a guild and while some people have suggested I join theirs I don't know how. Well I'm ready for help now. Anyone out there want to help an old lady ranger?
caballo_oscuro
Rayna, sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with Elona Reach. The key with this mission is patience, pulling groups, and not getting overwhelmed. 30 minutes is plenty of time to get the last two crystals.
Pulling and dealing with groups in small numbers, focussing attention on an individual target in a group is the easiest way to deal with this mission.
There's a walkthrough on http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Elona_reach if you're really stuck.

Yeah thanks. I've been trying to do just that. I don't take any fighters because they tend to run after everything. I plant my party and try to wait until the mobs are split up. It just takes so much time to kill the sages and arcanists that we're still fighting when another patrol gets close. I've read the walkthroughs. I've seen the maps. I know where the crystals are. I just can't get the kills fast enough. Can you tell me some good skills to take for a ranger? I've been using power shot, distracting shot, troll ungeunt, winnowing, and 2 pet skills plus comfort animal. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

If your still having trouble with this mission I would be glad to help you in a little while when I get on, IGN Lord Of Malkier.

Another thing to consider is the quality of your armor and weapons? If your armor is not of max quality you should consider replacing it. You have two basic options:
1. sidestep from storyline and buy max armor, (for a ranger that is armor level 70), it requires that you have some cash and materials available. You can either go to Beacon's Perch and pay other players for a run to Droknars Forge where you can buy, or if you own Nightfall, Factions or Eye of the north you can do certain quests from Lions Arch to get to places there and have armor crafted for you.
2. Get collectors armor in the elona desert area. This is the way to go if you lack in funds, are patient and wish to stay within the storyline of the game. For example you can hunt Storm Kin in Salt Flats and collect 5 Shriveled eyes from them, and hand then in to the collector Sir Norrington and get gloves. 5 more gives you a mask and there are other collectors around that will provide you with boots, chest armor and leggings.
For weapons, you should have a bow doing 15-28 damage with some good bonus.
Collector Morn Drakespur in Skyward Reach provides a nice bow for 5 hydra claws. Or you can jump to Lions Arch and type in the trade chat: WTB nice bow max 2k, and you will soon get some useful bow offered from another player.
When this is done, try again, and follow caballo's advice for strategy
Good luck

That mission is crappy indeed. I see you already found help, so you should do it. However, if you're ever again having trouble with timing consider doing the bonus separately, i saves a lot.
Also be sure to always take out the healers first, other way the battle is really too long, and call targets.

If you are still in need of help, I'd love to lend a hand! Just leave your in-game name here.

this misson is still runnable as far as i know. chances are someone in your guild/ally will be able to do it. If not, generally at least 1 person running it a day 2k/per person.
Edit: Srry mis-read that you don't have a guild, get one, they'll prolly help you even if they don't run it.

It's very simple. The leader or one of the officers of the guild you wish to join must create an invitation for you by entering your character name in their guild menu as an invitee. (This will cost the officer 100g, and some guilds may expect you to reimburse them for this expense. I'm inclined to say that you should avoid any guild that wants payment.) Once the invitation has been created, press the "G" key on your keyboard to open up your guild menu to accept the invitation, at which point you will become a member.

Also willing to help, I had the same problem in the beginning. After getting some good builds the mission is quite easy.
Did you also have problems with thirsty river? I can imagine if you have problems with this mission that one will also give you some trouble.
If you need any help me and my discord/sab team will give you a hand.

I know what you mean, that mission is a real pain. Recently went to do the mission in HM for my guardian titles and i didn't see that many runners. As said previously, take out the healers first, then i'd take the eles since they can knock down your whole party and keep your interrupts like distracting and savage shot for the skills that really matter like word of healing for the healers and earthquake for the eles.
EDIT: If you play on the eastern time zone, send me a pm on the forum and i'll give you my IGN. At this rate you could end up with a full party.

I too would be willing to help an "old lady" (who's probably about the same age as my daughter ). IGN - John of Woods.
There are a few "tricks" in that mission - for example, don't try to go across the bridge to get to the second crystal, go around the long way.
Btw, like many other quests/missions, ER becomes much easier with humans or heroes instead of henchmen.
P.s. I guess I'm the only one who's never had big problems with this mission.

Ohh boy, even the gods hate this mission. If you aren't with a good party your frustration will be endless. This was one of my nightmares long ago, and we were all new once. OP, if you need help in the future feel free to send me a PM on here.

Wow, it looks like everyone finds this mission hateful. Back when I did it first time, and I had to do it at least twice, they told me: what, are you joking, it's a crazily easy mission! I thought it was only me. And now after a lot of time and getting a lot better I still don't breeze through it. That's why I didn't offer physical help like others did.
Benderama
you said you don'thave a guild~ join one like Kiss which will have lots of XP players ready to help. you can usually see people adverstising guilds in gmae, whisper them and ask to join. or search guilds online, most with websites have oonline application forms or show the IGN of their officers.
Tips:
*go slower, you have 30 minutes to collect 2 objects. honestly if you need to pull back because your party isn't killing a sage (believe me hench pick the stupidest times to attack the target you're not attacking).
* pull groups so you don't end up with 2 healers.
*bring more damage skills/hench to kill the sages quicker
*bring prot skills so you can always just run the crystal back to the ghostly hero if your party gets stuck on another forgotten sage.
Also it may just be your profession, buy new skills. some professions struggle to complete certain missions (try an early mesmer in vizunah square).

Yes. Yes it does.
LOL! You're right. I don't know what half the stuff people here are talking about. But I do understand better armor. I am off to the desert to find shrivelled eyes and what not and better armor. Now if I just understood how the runes/insignia work. I read the wiki but I'm still kindof lost. I just wish there was a list somewhere of examples of good ways to apply attribute points and what runes etc. to use in what situation. Like for Elona Reach I would like to know what skills I should bring.

For the desert, I'd say lots of interrupts are key. Certainly helps against the arcanists, and if you're quick enough to interrupt Word of Healing, it's a bonus
The desert is where tactical play really starts to be vital. I think that everyone who ever played through Prophecies for the first time struggled with the desert. Without heroes, of course!
There are a lot of offers of help from some good folk here - maybe you should take them up?
Good luck
[Edit] Ooh, I nearly forgot. Make sure you do the quest The Forgotten Ones and its follow-up Forgotten Wisdom before you leave the desert. It's one of two VITAL quests that give you 15 extra attribute points.

For the runes and insignias, you could read wiki. Or just do like most do stay away from the ones who give you a health penaly. Maybe one major with one superior vigor rune. My own ranger has expertise and marksmanship on high. All surviror insignias I think.
BrettM
Note: you can't apply insignia to collector armor from the Crystal Desert. So choosing insignia will not be an issue until you get a set of crafted armor in Droknar's.
Laraja
Hey Rayna. The first time I did this mission, I found it frustrating too. Although I have to say, the bonus for Dunes of Dispair was the most frustrating of all.
From our earlier pm's you have my IGN. Just drop me a whisper and really, I'll be happy to help. I have a whole slew of heros and between you, me and them, we'll own this mission. I have legendary guardian/protector titles for Tyria on several characters, so I know the mission well.
P.S. I can help you with armor, too.

I went back and did the bonus with henchies since my party skipped the bonus, but it was a bit tricky and by the time I was delivering the last crystal, I had a train behind me. You don't have to join a clan/guild to get help. All of the missions I needed help on, I just hung out in the area until someone was looking for a group and I spoke up and got an invite. If your pickup group can't get it done, wait for another group to form. It usually doesn't take long.
RaynaA
Seriously guys, thanks! All this really helps. It has become a matter of pride that I do this mission with henchmen only. LOL. I will conquer it! And if not then I have a bunch of IGNs to help me out. I have 2 pieces of the desert 70 armor so far and I'm on the way to getting the rest. I rather enjoy the desert, except for those darn hydras! I will surely let those who offered help know when I get stuck again. Probably after 5 or 6 more fails I will come crawling back!
aspi
Good luck, and remember after this you also have Tirsty river to look forward to
majoho
As aspi is suggesting you will have serious problems with Thirsty River, actually I'm not sure it can even be done with only henches.
(it's not much of a problem if you have heroes though).
(it's not much of a problem if you have heroes though).
thelessa
You can do those missions with just henchmen, I remember doing them with a friend and just henchmen before heros came out.
Snograt
Well yes - we all did the desert missions with henchmen before heroes came out! Even back then I was allergic to PUGs.
To be honest, the Crystal Desert is where Guild Wars started to get serious for a lot of us. Then, four missions later came what they called "the noob filter", Thunderhead Keep. I freely admit that I was stuck on that mission for three months
Nowadays, with the help of those lovely heroes, I can breeze through that epic in hard mode with nary a pause for breath.
Are things better now? Different, for sure - but better? Sometimes I wonder...

- Six party limit.
- Henchmen are all lvl 17.
- If memory serves me, all foes are at least lvl 20.
- Henchmen have no elite skills.
- Chilblains.
- Scarabs that pop out of nowhere and don't want to die.
- Devourers who pop up with them^ at the same time.
- Corpse exploitation.
- Wurms popping out of the ground at the worst possible time.
- Massive anti-melee from drakes and elementals.
- Alesia.
- Etc.
To the OP: I think my guild is helping you with this mission, as I type this post. Best of luck.

One note, since the release, alot skills have been changed or nerfed.
One importantly, the Elite the Monk Sages use, has become (alot) better.
Making mobs with Monk Sages more difficult.
My point, Crystal Desert nowadays might be more difficult then it was when Prophecies was released (with only Henchman).
lol, Thunderhead Keep, with good Heroes it was extremely easy for me. It was so easy it was boring.

As far as thirsty river goes, i remember having troubles with elona reach but doing thirsty with henchies without too much problems.

Update from the old lady: I stopped playing for a while then got a good deal on Nightfall and Factions so I started an ele in NF and as soon as I could I caught a ride over to Tyra. I just finished ER on the first try with about 10 min left AND got the bonus. Using heroes and henchies it's soooo easy compared to the first time! Heroes rock!
