Hello all!

I don't play Guild Wars anymore..but I have a bit more than 600k gathering dust in storage that I think should go to other people who DO play..so what better way to do this than to have a contest!

(Just so you know I'm not lying)

Problem is..I can't think of what to do! It could be something you write in Guru...but it COULD also be something in-game..but that would be a bit more difficult, and I haven't a lot of time to be organizing something complicated.

So what I am asking from you now is to suggest whatever ideas you can for a contest that I could hold to give away this money. I think I want to have more than 1 winner that way we can spread things out nicer..6 winners would work nicely..which would probably be narrowed down from other finalists. But it's up to you!

Besides cash I have other nice stuff that needs an owner as well..so the creator of the idea that I like best will receive a nice prize!

Have fun!

If you're looking for an in game event: Pick an outpost, describe it in a few lines, post it on guru and give the prizes to the first few people who open trade with you in that outpost.

The idea isn't originally mine by the way, somebody else on guru organized something like this a couple of times (every time he gave away his gifts of the traveller I believe). He also described the outposts in a haiku.

Time invested:
- Making the announcement on Guru of when you'll do the scavenger hunt. - a few minutes
- Picking an outpost, your hiding spot in it (so you don't show up to people who just zone in and out to guess your location) and describing it in a haiku. - maybe an hour?
- Spending the time standing out in the open waiting for people to find you. - to your own liking, the original organizer waited no longer than 15 minutes, though usually he was found within a couple of minutes.

Of course it requires people to have the campaign/outpost unlocked, but I believe by now most people have access to most campaigns. Either way, I can't take credit for the idea, but the person who I first organized it stopped doing it around halloween 2009.

An ingame event with multiple parts where people can score points. The person with the most points at the end wins

(This can be anything. A riddle, hide and seek, random trivia questions, joke contest, outfit contest etc etc)

I think it should be a joke contest.

Well you could have a speed contest. Basically you tell everyone here to show up in the thread at a certain time, and make a post at a time of your choosing, and whoever posts after you wins. You can do it a bunch of times at specified times (or even random) and give the prizes to the people who post first, or first, second , etc. This would relay on interest though, but i dont think that should be a problem. The only problem might be peoples internet speeds, lol

Another way is to have an art or a screenshot contest, where you give people a theme and then pick the best results to be winners. The last art contest that was held by someone who was taking a break from GW and wanted to distribute his ecto was about showing a battle with the Augury Rock doppelganger. Other themes have been drawing the player's own characters, or drawing something with a Canthan feel to it, among many others. These do take some time, but don't require you to do a lot of work for them. Just post up your contest with a deadline, wait a few weeks until the deadline, then get results and give the winners their prizes.

Screenshot contests have included funniest screenshot, or screenshot contests in the style of America's Next Top Model, where around 12 contestants are picked beforehand, given assignments each week and then one contestant eliminated each week until there's only 3 or 2 left. Of course, this type of contest is rather time consuming, but you could shorten it down to one week by giving an assignment of your choice to anyone who wants to participate. Letting people use Photoshop on their screenshots would give it an extra twist.

Of course, ingame events are great fun and aren't limited to just people on this forum. Then again, it can be harder to get attention to ingame events, since the people who don't read the forums won't necessarily know it's happening.

Another idea I had is that you could come up with something random, like a picture of a turtle doing something funny. People would then have the look around the internet for a picture of a turtle doing something funny, or even a video, then post the pic or vid on here. Then you would pick the best one.

An idea would be to have a contest where you pick a topic, lets use turtles, and have people submit pieces for a few different categories (6 because you want six winners?) So for the example you could say that turtles are the topic and that the categories are, painting/drawing, photo-shopped picture, piece of writing (essay poem w/e), video, song, and (insert 6th category here). Then you set a deadline of like 2 weeks and ta-da!

You could just do a random draw for the six winners, I know it sounds lame but if you don't have alot of time that may work.

I think a contest like this should be a guru only contest, no in-game stuff because of time zones. Now, it's better if you choose 5 winners. 1st-gets 275k and his choosing of 5 items of what u got in storage, 2nd-gets 150k and 5 of your other stuff in storage, 3rd-gets 100k and 3 of the remaining stuff in storage, 4th-gets 50k and 3 storage items and 5th gets 25k and w/e is remaining from storage. The number of storage items can vary depending on what u got left. And if your planning in NOT ever returning to GW you can even think about giving away for the 1st place the account once you've given away the prizes, ofc with the characters included so he can feast on skills and Hall of Monuments achievements(I'll confess, my best friend liked the game and wants to play so I'm looking for an account before I decide to buy the game for her.)

Now for an idea, since I believe this should be a guru only thing. You already have a good contest here, you can just choose which one you think had the best idea and start giving the prizes away. I think that would be the best idea(the one you already had maybe without noticing.)

The ideas above are great but the thing is a photo/drawing contest, wont be fair since not everyone is an artist and the one that in fact is an artist will win. Name a joke, will depend on sense of humor. In-game events, will affect those with different time zones. Internet picture contest again it will be a matter of taste, keep in mind that not every thing that I think is funny/cute/bad ass/great, would probably be lame for you.

So, at the end. The best thing to do would be(like I already said), let people post their different ideas on what the best contest would be. And the top 5 ideas for the contest win the prizes. IF you like it or not is up to you, BUT I'll remind you that PLZ, if you're thinking of leave GW for ever, consider giving away the account and of course keep me in mind if you do.

p.d. Sorry I wrote a lot but since I'm getting connection problems I decided to just have fun posting what I find to be more fitting for the contest.

What you could do is like the random draw, create a new email address and get everyone to send you an email with their chars info.
The using a website called random.org it will then choose random numbers and find the emails with those numbers. If you get what i mean. So if you have 1000 emails and 512 is choses, then find the 512th email, or something similar.

Another option that might be easier is to get people to email you a number from 1-100/1000 as their subject. Using a search function to find the person with that number/ closest to. Also 2 emails per person.

And if that is too much for you, first person to pm you the correct answer to a question, but i think its fair to state the time you will post the question. Then the first 5 people with the correct answer wins.

Another option, give it to me lol.

1) You could ask a question and the first person who would whisper you in-game (or on here) with the correct answer wins. You could do multiple questions as well.
2) Give it away to the top ideas that you liked the most
3) You could make a 1v1 battle for the gold. You could guest contestants to your guild hall where they would have to equip their best PvP build and go into a 1v1 with the rest of the competitors. The last man standing wins 1st place.
4) You could describe a certain weapon and the first person to whisper you in-game or on here saying what kind of weapon you are describing wins. 1st person to contact you gets first place, 2nd gets 2nd, etc

I have been thinking and to be fair it should not be first come first serve. But randomly chosen.

As russiansteven said a PvP contest, i dont think that would be good. For example me and a lot of my friends are PvE and dont have any PvP builds or ever do it so would be unfair. Also like someone said earlier what if someone is in a different timezone it would be unfair for them.

I think what ever contest it is, it should be a fair chance for everyone even new players.

Perhaps a few games of hide and seek? You'd take 6 people with you (and one that would look so that they wouldn't be cheating) onto some big area and run away from them. Then you'd give them 5 minutes to find you. The first one who finds you gets 50k. If noone finds you in that period of time - you give them nothing, or something that has small value (peppermint candy cane or something like this) You'd do that a few times and then you'd give items instead of money. Good idea?

There is no contest; You will give the money to me...to me....to me....to me...to me...to me...to me...............

**Serious now**: You can have a contest in which players take EPIC in game pictures and submit one in for the contest. You pick whatever u like the best.

OR

You can have people create a funny build out of 8 skills.

Victory is a four letter word [quit]

Well, here it goes =)

If you want to give that money for 6 winners, i'd say, Team contest.
Team contest with 6 person in each team. Max participators would be 48, 24 or any number which can split to 6 person per team. Then after you have enough people, you randomly make teams with 6 person inside each team.

So thats the start. After that you can start the real competition, which could be one of the following:

-PvP-battle.Teams would do 6v6 and loser team would drop from contest and winner team would move up. After there is only 2 teams left, would be final battle.
And there is things you could edit on this part too like, only Monks in team..Only one skill in skillbar's..without armor..or anything! =)

-Leveling contest. Every member on team should make new character and you would give give the time limit, 30 minutes to couple days.

After the time is up, you do some maths, if team 1 got levels, 3+5+6+4+3+5, that team would score 26. And the team with best score would win the competition. You could give some rules too like, only Canthan characters, only Mesmer professions.

There could be competition inside guru too:

-"I was First!"- competition. You tell people in this topic that first 6 who post something on your new topic, will get the price.

-"You think you know everything about Guild Wars?"-Contest.
You make 6 questions about Guild Wars like, "Where did Prince Rurik born?" or "Which continent does have mission called Eternal Grove?".

And first 6 who answer right on your questions, would get the price and only one person could answer on one question.

And it could be art contest too.
Draw, paint or make a movie about your Guild Wars experiemence.

People would Draw, pain or make their own movie about their own Guild Wars journeys and experiemences. Then you choose 6 best.

Hope this helped you!

Take a screen pic of where you're gonna be and set a date when you're going to be online. Everyone will have to find you based on the pic (so don't make the pic obvious). Don't give away the district number (can be other countries as well, just for kicks =P) And have ppl meet you there. First come first serve. Distribute the rewards evenly so even the last prize will get a fair share. Everyone's Happy! =)

Scavenger hunts are always fun, even if you don't win ;-)

First you begin by describing the outpost you are in, by using a couple of vague clues. An example could be "The sky is red". After 1 minute you post the next clue and continue doing so until you have have given 5 clues.
As soon as the first players get to the right outpost, lets say piken square, you tell them through local chat to go get 3 Fetid Carapaces or an other thing related to the region (should be something players don't usually have saved, for more fair competition).
And the first person their open trade with you and trade you the correct items win, next person is second place and so on.

This mean that it isn't enough to find you first (even if it helps since it gives you more time), but you also need to be lucky and get the right drops first.
All numbers can of course be changed to whatever you think is most fitting, and yes it take some time to plan and run, but its worth it.

I'm pretty sure if I were you I'd want the contests to be simple so that you don't have to do so much work for something your giving away, so I was thinking that you should probably gather anyone who wants to go at a certain location, and than play simon says with us but giving us emote that we have to use, so like "simon says cheer!"
or something along the lines of that, because its easy, simple, and fun

A fun non-ingame contest that doesn't rely on talent (drawing, writing, etc.) and is more interesting/fun than a random drawing is the "radio drawing" style contest, where the n-th poster on a given thread wins x-amount. Just another idea for variety.

Then again, I've been trying to assemble backers for a contest where participants investigate a specific aspect of GW (lore, mathematic phenomenon, comparison of classes, etc.) in a "study" format and the studies that "are most beneficial to the GW community" would be the winners. Of course, since studies take time, the contest window would have to be open for a month or two. Judges and backers are always wanted

If I were you I'd give it to FoS leader (the one which made Guild Wars MV, which you can watch on youtube) for his great work on those movies. But since you want contest - just do some hide'n'seek games or guess a number from 1 to 100 and give some of that money to a person, who'll be closest to that number.

I think the money should be given away to the people who deserve it most. Itd still be a contest; you would post a thread on guru with the money your giving away with the prizes weighted accordingly(250k 1st place, 125k 2nd, etc.). Each person who wants a chance to win would have to write a paragraph saying the reason why they think they deserve your money.
An example would be like: Hey Im just starting a new guild. Ever since i was a boy i was wanted my own guild in GW. With your money i could fund my guild in both recruitment and completing my guild hall and live my long life dream of being the BEST GUILD LEADER EVA!

This gives people a chance to be creative where there stories can range from real life events to fictional made up stories about their chars. You would choose the winners based on whose story you liked best.

I think this contest idea is best because it allows for a lot of creativity and adjustments based on the contest you want to have. Also, seeing as u dont have a lot of time to set up this contest, this idea would really be easy for you because it takes almost no time to set up and all you have to do is read other people's awesome stories. You could even get more advanced and allow people to make youtube videos about why they deserve the money! Hope this helps!

I came up with no idea of mine, but I found the above to be the best suggestion.

Things requiring speed or ingame are unfair for timings and connection issues. Things requiring a specific talent are unfair for...well, for talents.
Drawing...too much random, people gets the money with no effort.

Even though I kinda hoped for something for my idea, I should be objective and I have to admit that idea of Spike Stritter is the most fair. I can't think of a better way to give people money for what they need.

How about a raffle? Say you have 22 spots open for this lottery-type-raffle, the spots go from 1-22, a spot can only be claimed by the first person to ask for that specific spot. When all spots are used up, you simply go to: www.Random.org, there you get a number generated. When the number comes you simply have to screenshot it and show everyone which number came up, so you can't cheat the system.

Thoughts?

You could use this thread as your contest.

What I mean is you could pick your 6 favourite ideas in this thread and give them each 100k + items. This would be a good idea because then you're giving to other people who are interested in giving and would put the money to better use than their own e-peen.

As for giving out items, just give your favourite idea first pick of some items, your secound favourite secound pick of items and so on. Limiting the number of items someone could take would make it fair and free up left over items (if any) to honerable mentions. Another idea is you could give the items to the honerable mentions. A third idea is you could just sell all your stuff and give prizes to your 7th or 8th favourite. Going on the 3rd idea, you could give 100k to your top 5, and divide whats left amoung your other favourites. Although, alot of that is considering you have items left.

I had another thing to say, but I forgot it.

Items are simple, post the items and request for people to tell you how they'd put them to use .

Don't complicate the cash though, unless you really want the burden of a thousand people driving you crazy to be your last memory of GW. Signup in a thread and random number selection is the easiest way.

or if your just need to get it over with real quick , pick a random number from a random number generator, and whoever has that post # in this thread wins first prize. Just repeat for however many other winners you want.

There are lots of good ideas in this thread and any of them would work but

I have been the recipient of friends giving away their cash/ectos 3 times now and in EVERY case they DID return to GW after a while. Luckily I am no spendthrift and was able to restore what they had given me (though none of them asked for that). So much as everyone likes free stuff, I would urge some caution before giving it all away.

Why dont you just have people write a post explaining why they deserve the gold and what they intend to spend it on. Then you could decide who you feel deserves it rather than it go to someone who already has more than enough

I think you should go to a random town or outpost. Once there, tell people that you are giving away unique items. Ten, tell people to self invite to your party. The first 3,5,or 7 people to join you, (depending on the town or outpost) you add. Once in the explorable area, tell the players to stay by the portal. (Now this is where you need someone to ensure that the players STAY by the portal.)
Go far away from the portal, drop the item and come back. Then say go and the players will go and find the item. People may have running builds equipped, but they can't be everywhere at once. After 10 minutes, you go to where you dropped the item if no one has found the item, re-zone and drop it somewhere else. If someone has found it prior to the end of 10 minutes, they will say so and P.M. them and have them tell what it was to ensure they are not lying. Go to a different town and do the same. This is a little time consuming but it is kind of fun I think.

I know I already posted, and frankly I prefer the first idea, let the guy with the idea for a contest you liked the most take the prize and then pick 2nd and so on. But some dude just made a contest giving away 1000k, he posted a random build, and the guy with most wins at random arenas with the build the host posted wins 1st, then the second most wins wins 2nd and so on. Of course the proof will be a screen shoot of the wins and build(if you know how to use photo shop theres no way in hell someone is cheating on the picture without you finding out). And I think thats the best idea I've ever seen cause it's extremely fun, everyone can do it. And of course, have a deadline.
