Is Guild Wars worth it?

Thank you all in advance for any comments left.

First off I am coming from Knight Online and have been playing KO for almost 3 years. I finally got fed up with it and started looking for a new game.

I have played almost 20 hours for Guild Wars demo...(2 different accounts) and playing and messing with different characters. There are many things that I liked and was impressed with.

But here are my questions, if you could be so kind to answer it would help be make the descision to buy GW or not.

In general is the game worth it?

How is end game? Is there enough to do, or are you just running the same instant over and over again?

How is the PVP. Say what you want, but KO has a great team PVP system. How is PVP in GW? Other games I've tried it stinks (WoW, Runes of Magic, and all those like them)

Is it worth getting GW, or waiting for GW 2? ( but i see that its estimated release is end of next year).

Also Im NOT looking for a flame fest, but what are the issues / problems with the game?

This may all seem silly to you, but I would like to make an informed descision be fore making a change. For those that have played KO, seeing that I have stayed with it for 3 years shows you how I am.

Thanks again, and Peace

hmm, seems like there have been a lot of these threads recently... Anyway, to answer your questions:

Yes, guild wars is worth it. Iv been playing for over three years and i still think its really fun. Replayability is good in this game and having heroes adds a whole new element of strategy. Definitely get all of the expansions if you plan on playing.

End game is good. Like i said, this game is very replayable and there are plenty of stuff to do after the game is over. Hard mode in particular adds a unique challange to more advanced players.

PvP is okay. Some will say it is dead, but it isn't really. Low end PvP at least is pretty fun and you can either play competitively or just for fun, no matter what your playstyle is. There are cooperative missions where you randomly get teamed up with other players, and two teams compete to achieve a goal. There is also random arena which is where you get randomly matched up with three other players and fight it out with another team in a classic gladiator style. Higher end PvP, on the other hand, is a pretty exclusive club, and it is very difficult to get started in since teams are formed beforehand and often players are only willing to take those with experience.

I would go ahead and get GW1. It is a fun game and its going to be awhile before GW2 comes out anyway.

Hmm, problems... Well everyone has their own opinion of what the problems of the game are. Since I am primarily a PvE player, my problem with the game is the lack of updates the developers have been putting into the game recently. There used to be montly updates to attempt balancing overpowered and underpowered skills but recently, the updates have been a good 3-4 months apart. Another, more minor problem, is that speed clears have created an elitist attitude in a portion of the players. However, there is also a good portion of players and guild that are willing to welcome new players and accept different playstyles.

yes it is worth getting GW, not familiar with knight online, but you may find GW a bit different. but since you've played the demos and like it i'd recommend GW since there aren't many other games like it. it is definetley worth playing the original before GW2 anyway , even if it was announced for next month. ssome stuff will even carry over to GW2 too ;D

In short: IF you did like the demo then you should get it. The game aint cost much anymore these days and has no monthly payment. A big yes from me

Yes, $30 can get you 2k+ hours of gameplay

Endgame is what you expect of any MMO, yes, you repeat high-end instances. There are however Z bounties and small stuff to deviate, but that is a very small deviation.

How is the PVP. Say what you want, but KO has a great team PVP system. How is PVP in GW? Other games I've tried it stinks (WoW, Runes of Magic, and all those like them)
PvP is one way to raise your blood pressure, hate people, and receive grief. While fun at times, the majority of PvP is filled with elitists or asshats.

Is it worth getting GW, or waiting for GW 2? ( but i see that its estimated release is end of next year).
Get GW1; because nobody likes a bandwagoner

Also Im NOT looking for a flame fest, but what are the issues / problems with the game?
Armor clipping, scattered quest bugs. Overall the usual, but nothing game-breaking. You'll find skill imbalance is MUCH more prevalent than bugs.

If you are in North America, you can buy the GW Trilogy for $25 on Amazon.com which includes all three campaigns. They also have Eye of the North expansion for $7.50. What you will get is years of fun. I've been playing for almost 4-1/2 years now. This game is great for casual play also as there are no penalties for letting it sit for a few months.

While some people complain about the lack of updates it is just in comparison to when the game was newer. Although the "Live Team" is down to less than 10 people who work on GW, ArenaNet has not abandoned the game. You can check out the update section on the wiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page to see what has been happening. We have also been getting new end game content this year.

As Lanier explained the PvP is fun until you reach the top GvG level. This type of PvP requires 8-man teams who have the time to practice together and refine their team builds. If this is what you are looking at then you will need to own either all the campaigns and EotN or purchase the PvP pack.

The only downside is that due to its age and size, the population is very spread out except for trade cities. You will need to join a guild if you prefer to play in groups with real people.

You can wait for GW2, but you will be getting a completely different game, that, except for the lore, will have little connection to GW1.

Imo, Guild Wars is the best 20-30 dollars you could ever spend your money on if you're looking to have fun in a game.

I just wish Guild Wars was that cheap for me when I bought my account(s). I paid 40-50 dollars per campaign. Q_Q

@JonnieBoi05 - didn't we all? But still much cheaper to play than any subscription game.

Hmm... Yea, but, this is only true if you continue playing. In the long run, it's cheaper to play a "pay once and play free forever" compared to if you bought the game, played for a week and never picked it back up again.

Thank you for all your answers.

I just have a few more questions. Please correct me if I am wrong.

There are 3 different "campaigns" Prophecy, Factions, and NIghtfall. Each one has a seperate story. Does owning one give me more skills and drops in the different one? For example Owning Prophecy and Factions...while playing Prophecys I will have more items / skills in the game because I own Factions, as compared to not owning it?

I don't fully understand the Hall of Heros, I am assuming it is where I put achievements. If I do not own Eye of the North will I need to repeat all that I have done, in order to receive credit when I finally own EotN? Also similar to my first question will having EotN add more game content to a Prophecy campaign?

Thanks again for all of your help.

Peace

Yes, owning more campaigns will increase your skill availabilty.

And the Hall of Monuments is our [guild wars players] false sense of hope for better items in Guild Wars 2. As for having to repeat what you've done for the HoM, no, you will not have to. You will be able to add your previous achievements when you gain access to EotN.

You may have answered my question, but I would like to reask it in a different way just to be sure.

I understand that having more than one would would give me more skills / items...and that I can "transport" my character from one to the other and using skills / items obtained in one in the other.

My question is a bit different.

I own Prophecies and I would get skills X and items X.
If I owned Prophecies and Factions...While playing Prophecies I would get X + some new skills since I own Factions?...Or another way to look at it, that Factions adds game content to Prophecies?...Not just a new chapter.

Or is the skills and items chapter specific, but once earning them I can use them where ever I am?

Thanks again

there are what they call CORE skills which are available to all of the chapters/campaigns. Then there are also chapter specific skills...so if you got a prophecies skill you could use it in factions....if you own factions you will have more skills available to you that were not available when prophecies came out (same for nightfall).
Eye of the north is NOT a chapter, but an expansion and you would need to own one of the chapters/campaigns to access it etc and it also has more skills that you would then be able to use in factions, prophecies or nightfall.

No "new" campaign adds skills retroactively to "old" campaigns. To get a skill that is only available from a new campaign, you have to travel with your character to the location from where that skill is available in the new campaign, and get it there. Once aquired, you can use that skill everywhere.

The best builds usually contain skills from multiple, if not all campaigns.

There are some "key skills" for many professions that are chapter-specific. Skills that are exceptionally useful or powerful.
For example if you play Assassin in PvE, you should also have Nightfall to have the skill Critical Agility. The same for an Elementalist whose most powerful damage elite skill is Searing Flames, available from Nightfall. For Mesmers Prophecies for Panic or Nightfall for Visions of Regret. For Necromancers Prophecies for Aura of the Lich or Spiteful Spirit. And so on.
