Tanned Hide Squares
fowlero
Past couple days i've been really bored, so decided to pack out the few armours i need for my hall.
Seems nearly everytime i've needed tanned hide squares, the trader is almost always out of stock.
Was wondering, what is it that's causing this?

Nicholas the Traveller is collecting Elonian Leather Squares.
5 Tanned Hides + 5 Dust + 50g = 1 Elonian Leather Square from an Artisan.
So people are buying tanned hides en masse to make Elonian Leather, making material traders run out of stock.
Wait a day or so, and tanned hides will be common as muck again, and just as cheap.

Be sure to check ALL material traders in ALL campaigns, if u can.
The traders in more popular towns/outposts will run out first, while traders in less popular towns/outpost/places may still have some.

I've always wondered how that works, can we say for definite that it's not all one "stock level" and that different places run out at different times?
I know before the all district merge, if you went international american and europe traders had different prices etc but i'd wonder if it's definitely not all one now.

Only, I can spam the material traders in any town or my guild hall... they can be out of stock 1 second... then in stock the next... then out of stock again etc etc.

I think I'll have to call bs on dagrdagaz's statement also.

Yep, the traders are global. I think there was a time though when traders in different districts (America, Europe and Asia) had different stock levels back when you could only change your home district 5 times per account.

Depending on how much 10 Tanned Hide costs at the trader, you can buy a square of leather from the rare material trader and salvage it instead.

Yeah i second that. The trader does not matter where you trade if one has it they all do and vise versa

While I was globe trotting after this material yesterday I thought how much better it would be if stocks where not global.
Players would have to scour the world looking for supplies others had missed prices too could vary if it wasn't too much of a programming hassle.
I mean how logical is it for someone to buy from one trader and every other trader runs out at the same time.
I suppose it could be explained if all the traders were linked by the xunlai storage network but its never been stated that this was the case.
I just like the idea of players visiting all the out of the way places to get materials, if your lucky you get a good price from a trader at some backwater trading post who then hikes his prices up for the next buyer when he realises the demand.

Maybe it would be logic if you couldnt map around but had to actually walk/run from place to place.
Anyways I wouldnt want to have to check 10+ mats traders in 10+ places everytime i sell or buy something.

All traders are GLOBAL; meaning every trader in every single outpost/town always has the same amount of items at any given time with the exact same price. The traders are restocked by players. If I give the trader 5 ectos when he is empty on ectos, the first 1-5 people to buy them from him win the cake and, he will be sold out on ectos again until someone sells him more.
This rule applies to any trader in Guild Wars that requires you to hit "request quote" before being able to buy from him.

hmm.
Whatever the reason...
When material traders in towns like LA, Kamadan, etc. were out of Dust, the traders in Henge of Denravi and Saitung Harbor had some when i checked those a few minutes later.
So, my advice to check ALL traders remains.

Thats the key piece of information, people are buying and selling constantly, wait a few and it will be available (for a spell, since a large amount of people will be buying hides).

Your advice is useless unless your dealing with a player who has to be doing SOMETHING every second of every moment while playing, since all traders are linked anyway.

Dont follow my advice, fine by me.
I'll get prolly lucky while checking all traders while others patiently wait another day....

Um, then why would the material trader in my Guild Hall be out of them?

Dagrdagaz, you're making it way more complicated than it should be.
Why not just stand at the trader and constantly refresh? Worked for me on several occasions in the past. There's no telling how many opportunities you miss out on while mapping all over the place.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend wasting any amount of time at the trader for this week's Nicholas stuff. Tanned hides and dust are very easy to come by while just playing the game. Your salvage kit is your friend.

Dagrdagaz is wrong. And his entire theory is flawed by the basic premise that you can't be in two places at once to actually be able to check a trader simultaneously. So your experiences is obviously just random luck.
It is easy to disprove this just by getting 2 or three people together on vent who will go to different towns so you could sync going to the trader. You would immediately find out the truth

Go to Kurzick lands and solo some wardens. They drop hides directly and many armor pieces that salvage to hides, and also amber weps etc that you can get dust from.
Spiritspammer can do it, im sure others can aswell.
