Deciding to make a new profession
zany
I absolutely love healing, but I do need a break from it at times. I have not played in over a year and I am interested in making a new class; any ideas?
I would like to be able to farm if possible. I already have a monk, so that is out. I am thinking of rolling a mesmer, but I don't know how useful they are at the moment.
Any suggestions ?

Black Metal
I would suggest either a warrior, ranger, ele, necro, mes, rit, sin, derv, or paragon
zany
Was that a serious suggestion ?
Black Metal
if you have ten slots, and there are ten professions, you do the math

You give us no information about yourself. What do you expect us to do? It's impossible to make suggestions when there is no information to base it off. We could feed you our favourite professions but that's useless. Physical or caster? Melee or Ranged? Do you care about grouping a lot? etc.

I would like to farm, but not have to be limited to team play in order to do so. I am thinking either ranger or mesmer. I enjoy versatile classes that allows for creativity/ uniqueness. I normally do play support(healing), but I am looking to get away from that.
ApolloIV
My personal favourites are Rit and Sin. Though, this is of course a matter of opinion.
Cuilan
Since I don't know you I'll just throw out my more played...mesmer, assassin, and dervish.
zany
My question is what exactly would you do with a mesmer ? Mesmer is in fact my favorite pvp class, but for pve they don't seem to have much of a role.
Voodoo Rage
As an experienced monk, maybe try something as different as possible like a melee character. I've actually enjoyed playing a new sin the last week now that I have a much firmer grasp on maximizing the profession's damage potential via hero buffs. My first sin, I hated, because I just ran around with a bunch of discord heroes and didn't feel like I was contributing much.

Mesmers are one of the hardest professions to play, because they are so difficult to stick with compared to the other classes. They offer poor damage options without AP, little to no party support, are much slower at farming than other profs. Unlike other profs where you fire and forget (aside from VoR), a mesmer has to actively use skills. However, if you want shutdown on single or multiple targets, the mesmer class is the strongest. They are also useful in making a monk's life much easier. If you want to play as a mesmer, I'd strongly reccomend getting into a casual or elite guild (depending on your prefrences) that accepts mesmers on their team, since mesmers still have a stigma of being useless in the eyes of pugs.
My recommendation?
Assassin.

That is exactly why I was doubting rolling a mesmer. Alright, I narrowed it down to Sin, ranger, and ritualist.

I would recommend against Ranger, because AoE damage is less than other alternatives, and interrupt ability and effects is less than other other alternatives. Condition spreading is less useful at the end-game content, and utility and survivability is already handled by other classes better, and party-wide.
For sins to be very effective offensively, consumables are nice, like cupcakes combined with Critical Agility, or Rock Candies, or Alcohol with Drunken Master.
Rits are nice on players, because of Summon Spirits, and you can get a bit of variety in how you play, and still be very effective (full Armor of Unfeeling spirit wall, or have some spell utility; Splinter Weapon or Great Dwarf Weapon; Ghostly Might or Glaive)
For farming, both are pretty good, as long as you can get to where you want to, and are willing to invest time farming solo and/or joining groups.

Assassins farm well I am told, personally my reactions are too slow to handle close in farming I always get interrupted and am dead in seconds.
So if your like me a vintage player I would go for a spirit spam build it can work well on almost any class though a reasonable energy pool would be good.
I have successfully used this type of build on Rit Necro Ele Mesmer and even an assassin.
It works in hard mode though Raptors are tough as they can destroy all your spirits in short order.
Of course its been around for a while and due a nerf from the powers that be.

With a Rit it is easy solofarming using spirits, and with Destructive was Glaive, even better in teams.

Sins are awesome imo, i love playing on my PvE mesmer too+they just got buffed.

I'd say Ritualist. You can either join the action with a damage type build, or sit back and watch as a SoS spirit spammer, or even be a healer/prot with a Restoration build. A very versatile class.
