You can download the client...but it's missing alot..that you will end up downloading as you go unless you use the -image command

Downloading through the client is the only way to install the complete game (Using the -image hook).
The CDs are only helps to instaling the game. They are by no means anywhere close to being a complete install, seeing as teh full game is somewhere over 3.6GB at the moment.

1 Download the client
2 or borrow a game disk of a friend "any gw disk will do,its safe for you both as you are using your account information the disks are universal its the access code that's personal.
3 or copy the gw.dat and exe files from your old computer if you still have access to it.
Option 3 will set the game up as it was last time you played.
The Image command mentioned forces the files to update so you don't get the situation of the game updating as you enter new map areas.

They can be 50GB Blurays for all I care.
The actual point was that any DC/DVD/Bluray/whatever can only have the game installed up to a certain point... and that would be the point when the game was burned onto the disk. Any updates, patches or area additions added since that point in time can not be included and would therefore only be downloadable via the game client autoupdate function.

I thinking about uploading my Gw.dat file to a torrent. I have all the games and every area/location explored so it should cover almost everything to this date. Would seriously save some hours.

Back the game up to a second hard disk Monthly.
Better still flash drive
dvd rw or dvd r as a last resort
We are only talking a few pounds at most here to save you from disaster and hours of work.

Good idea and of course with dvd writers and flash drives no one should ever lose the game.

When Norton nearly destroyed my PC I was able to get on in safe mode and copy my Gw.dat file... a 3.11 GBs of it. That way after I installed Windows 7 fresh I just had to download the client and not use the j-image to redownload all 3 GB of data and waste nearly 2 days to do it.

We were talking about full game. Full game is in a dvd. Obviously.

I know what you mean, I have mine back up on another hard drive as well. I guess it will help those few people that don't have it back up or just don't have the space or something :/.

I used a Linux bootable dvd I had been experimenting with a few months before.
Booting into Linux let me access almost all the files on the hard disk I then copied all the important stuff and reformatted.
Since then GW is on 2 hard disks and also on a dvd rw.
Yes the copies are out of date and you have to update once you reinstall.
But there is a real difference in time between installing from a month out of date dvd or archived copy, and a 2 year out of date dvd.
Downloading it all again even on my fast broadband still takes longer.#
Which reminds me must back it up again.
