Battle for Lions Arch is blowing my head off, help.
kupp
I'm about to give up on this.
Vanquished all 3 continents, have the Eternal Guardian title. Did Slaver's on my own several times H/H'ing. I have experience in this game and consider myself a good player, but this quest is proving to be nigh-impossible, even in normal mode.
I'm H/H'ing it with the following setup:
Myself, warrior - An endurance scythe build with SY! has been the build that gave me the best results so far.
Gwen, with Panic and the standard domination skills and a few interrupts.
Livia as MM.
Last slot I leave it for Talkhora, a standard WoH build with Aegies and PS thrown in.
Henchies, I take Menhlo for the hard rez and the necro henchie for the blood ritual. Other than that, they're completely useless.
My problem is that after Confessor Isaiah dies, I get overwhelmed so badly that it's a lost cause.
Facing mobs 5-8 times larger than my party that will insta-kill everything that gets in range is completely mindnumbing. When I have Livia alive with some minions they act as meat shield, so I have a slight chance of survival there but if she dies, than it's almost impossible to regain momentum at that part of the quest. The few times I managed to get to the part where mobs are entirely Jade constructs and get 20 Elementalists at once, my whole party gets spiked to oblivion before I even have the change to get within melee range.
Tried multiple team builds, but none of them really worked for me so far. Spiritway had the most sucess, but I feel that doing this without Gwen and Panic is completely impossible at the very least when Jade mobs start spawning.
Anyone have any tips of any kind? Positioning, some builds that might be better suited, WHATEVER at all...

ive done it with fail groups and with great groups it seems human players make the difference

get another player to do with you and dont use the henchmens
Owik Gall
A full pug group might be the best. If you can get in a big guild and have everyone helping you, that'll be great. Heroes are sort of "eh" but definitely don't bring henchmen. Also, look up in the wiki for that quest and find any strategic hints and tips, and also look into it's discussion page.

Put Aegis and PS on your MM, bring Alesia and drop the monk hero. I brought Mes hench over necro but necro could work fine. In place of the monk take a curses nec... SS/Enfeebling Blood/Meekness/Well of Darkness/whatever you want to finish it out. The panic mes acts as general anti-caster, the curses nec acts as anti-melee, minions take the pressure off.
You, focus on damage, minor team support (like SY!), and since you are warrior make sure you have some survivability, but focus on damage primarily. Flag your hero/hench on the ridge to shoot down from while you don't push out too far. Use the help of the AI around you. The idea should be that you use a bunch of offensive skills to slow them down while you kill quickly.

Well I finally managed to do it. Gave up on henchies and found 2 other players, after a few tries and a dozen or so four leafed clovers and Salma's neart death experience, we managed to do it.
What a damn pain in the ass this mission was. Next time jack up the mob's inherent difficulty, instead of throwing 20-30 at once onto a party of 4-6 effective members... >.<

I find it really weird how so many people say the mission was hard, yet I managed to get it down first try with the mobs now even making past the flight of stairs. Is the mission that hard for casual players? o.0

Hmm... If you're able to do this H/H in HM without using consumables, tell me how.
I can't comment about NM since I've not tried it, but there have been screenshots with it finished (see the thread in Riverside Province about it).

To kupp, Try using a Ritual with a spirit build that has group interupt or 2 in it or some type of e-denial w/ using the spirits as a shield. Since your using Livia as a mm have you tried to add Death Nova to bomb them O,o

Hmm... Being Casual or hardcore has hardly nothing to do with experiencing a new challenge. You can play this game until you black and blue in the face and still lose when something new you never seen comes around.

The best results I've ever had steamrolling BLA were with...
1 x SoS
1 x SY! / Tank
1 x MoP / Splinter Barrager
1 x MM
1 x Panic
1 x UA
Obviously, some of these slots won't be fillable with H/H. Balling up mobs at the lower stairs seems to work wonders for the MoP or Barrager, at the expense of a few dead NPC's. Oh well!

I did it today with some effort, me being panic mesmer with standard spiritway and my friend running fire/earth hybrid with searing heat and some wards. He also brought Pyre and flagged him at where rangers stand.

RoJ, MM and spirits. Clear the 1st few waves. Then when they load up, pull back At the 1st big choke point lay spirits/minions. jades can't shoot what they can't see. RoJ really mows down mobs. Use standard SOS build w splinter weapon if you are a physical.
Edit: What this means is to keep all squishies around the bend. Out of line of sight. AVAS is very good for keeping them occupied with spirits and minions. You will have to flag heros out of aoe damage. But if you keep balling up several of the bad guys and get off 2-3 rojs early on, you will eventually win out.

It is a toughie - heres how I H/Hed it in NM:
1) Start off down at the main square, the trick is to retreat a little bit every couple of waves as the NPCs around you get killed.
2) One trick is to put your Heroes up on the ridge with the archers. This is particularly good with spirits as they can get a nice good range on them and be relatively safe from melee.
3) As you retreat try to ball the enemies at choke points and take them down with AoE (I was using a scythe ranger and then my SoS spirit Rit had splinter and ancestors' rage, lots of tasty AoE). Good places to do this are the stairs, first from the main square to the fountain/statue square, and then the second set of stairs leading to the gate to the garrison.
4) Use decent heroes, with runes and good weapons. You need all the help you can get, and this really really helps. I used the following:
Myself as a Scythe Ranger. (Wounding Strike etc)
Xandra as a SoS rit (Signet of Souls, Bloodsong, Ancestors' Rage, Splinter Weapon, Painful Bond, Renewing Surge, Spirit Siphon, Death Pact Signet)
Olias as a AotL MM (Aura of the Lich, Animate Bone Minions, Death Nova, Foul Feast, Masocism, Putrid Bile, Signet of Lost Souls, Pure Was Mei Ling (sp?))
Vekk as a Ether Renewal Infuser (Infuse, Convert Hexes, Protective Spirit, Shield Guardian, Aegis, Aura of Restoration, Ether Renewal, Life Attunement)
Then a healer and the Mes hench. I wiped a couple of times, but the NPCs kept the mobs busy whilst I made my way back to the front.

I managed to do it yesterday with H/H, NM ofcourse...
1 HB hero
1 AotL mm (lvl 20 and lvl 21 minions make this mission much easier)
1 Sos hero (similar to this build with http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Build:Rt/any_Spirit_Spammer but with union and splinter)
I was playing a SY w/rit with another splinter weapon equiped.
2 warrior henchies
Key is to micro the SoS hero before enemies are incoming so that the spirits are well spread infront of the stairs so you basically have a spirit and minion wall. When the are about to die, let the Sos hero recast all of them so enemies are balling up while coming up the stairs and thats where i was pretty much waiting for them with 100b + whirlwind + splinter and SY of course.
Used a whole conset and i had no trouble anymore .
It was a pretty basic tactic, which worked for me, so anyone should be able to do this tbh, just takes some preperation.

Armor ignoring aoe damage is your best friend. I used my ferocious strike+death blossom build on my ranger with Sabway heroes and got pretty good results. Splinter+death blossom annihilates most everything I come across. I brought the necro henchie for blood ritual, and the other one I don't remember. I'd go with the mesmer I guess, for a bit of shutdown. Prioritizing targets is one of the most important things in BLA though. Killing a White Mantle necromancer that has minions up will send them in all directions, giving you additional meat shields without much effort.
Additionally, I found that triggering the initial burst of aoe spells from the elementalists and then flagging my h/h back worked wonders, since all the enemy fire power was used up for a few key seconds, allowing me to plunge in with minions+splinter/death blossom spam again.
I had the most trouble with the final bit. I died a few times, but I managed to win without using consumables once I got used to the flow of enemies. I think my most important tip is to not be afraid to utilize the npcs, even at the beginning. They are there to help you, and the more firepower you have, the faster you can kill things, and the less chance you will be overwhelmed. Also, if you are far back enough to use the npcs nearby, you won't overaggro.

When I try this I'm definitely going to run an earthshaker warrior with crude swing and whirlwind for a near-constant chain of pwnage. I'll probably put dark fury on an SS/MoP hero for some added adrenaline goodness.
Gwen with Panic, SS/MoP, MM bomber with prots, UA monk, and SoS/Splinter rit should tear it up with my earthshaker warrior. Hell, I might even run some stances to make it fun. )

Why Glyph of Energy on a warrior?

Had another human, pretty sure we just minion/spirit spammed. Whenever we lost a significant amount of minions we'd back up a bit more into the fortress. I'm pretty pessimistic, so whenever someone dies I almost immediately give up, but try not to, just rez 'em and keep going.

Just did this the other day with my guild, which has a few casual players (we only meet once a week). Panic, SoS, one hero healer, and don't remember the other builds for our necro and para.
I needed it on my warrior, which I barely play, so I ran Defy Pain with SY! Was fun letting enemies tickle me. SY, WY and DP are easily maintained. I added Dolyak for when things got pear-shaped. Using the stairs to body block was pretty easy, though if you don't have all these crazy-powerful meta skills or consumables, it gets dicey fast. Willing to help anyone who still needs it, just PM me on here.

For Jora with my other characters I've replaced Glyph of Energy with Hundred Swords. Seems okay I guess. Be a damn waste if all those swords I collected are pretty much useless.
I tried posting before and the reply some how got lost...

Anything with Hundred Blades, Whirlwind Attack and an IAS is wonderful for a sword swinger

IAS = Interrupt Action Signet?
Marty Silverblade
Increased Attack Speed. Things like Flail that make you attack 33% more quickly. Warriors without one are bad Warriors.

Lot of things work. I went in as Ranger with spirit spam. Modified Sabway. Took couple henchies, Livia mostly kept them alive. MM was using Flesh Golem for expendable and exploding melee. Gwen interrupt with either Panic or Tease, forget which.
Had a bag full of consumables, but first run I went without consumables and won. But I did use Rez Scroll with the one party wipe I had. Threw the flag up by the fountain, rez'd the party. Killed the offending boss. By the time the next wave arrived, the party could be moved to the head of the first flight of stairs again.
This is a long and tedious and cheesy quest. Even though I had no real trouble with it, it was not what I would call fun.

Don't usually have a problem with that quest. You just stand on stairs, and let them come. If you tank on door or pillars, expect a wipe at some point.
When I smite, I run auspicious incantation / echo / RoJ with PVE skills (snow storm, finish him, EVAS, although summon ice imp would be better for snares). [OwUDMsz/QuViOLB+Mui7ixkyEA] judge intervention if you have minions, else reversal of damage.
If I monk, I have a weird ZB build I use for kicks (I prefer prots here). [OwAT003CVKM6SbT7uKHULKg4FEA]
You need a SoS as a spirit wall, some nukes, can bring a MM as well, and one or two monks depending on the PUG / heroes. As long as you have high DPS, two monks is fine, but one is OK if your team is organised and don't tank everything.
When you get pressured by jades, you fall back towards the NPCs at the back.
As long as the players fall back and dont stand in front of a wave of mursaats and jade cloaks, it's pretty straight forward.

I did it on normal mode pretty easily with 2 Ritualists (one SoS, one SoGM) and 1 MM, as well as 2 level 10 henchmen. I'd say my 3 heroes pretty much did all the work because I took the stupidest build ever.
Searing Flames, Meteor Shower, Glyph of Sacrifice, Glyph of Lesser Energy and a bunch of single target skills. I have no idea why I swapped out my Assasin's Promise for, nor do I remember what it was swapped out for.

I've tried just about every tip i could read and still can't do this quest, my main problem is what class to play my character (ele) to support my team. Also you guys make it out that the NPCs can tank but they just seem to get flattened along with me as soon as the Jade warrior boss shows up. anyone got anymore advice?
Vnewbie
Whew, just H/Hed this, and despite my horrific failures prior I suddenly cheesed it just now.
- One Glimmer of Light Monk (inorite?)
- One Panic Mes
- One Earth Ele with Ward against Melee/Elements
- I ran Splinter Barrage
- Alesia and Claude
I sat on top of the tall hill and barraged like crazy, while leaving the H/H a bit behind the top of the lower stairs. NPC pathing is lulz, such that even if there are 20 of them running around the courtyard, only about 5 will get to your kill zone at any given moment. The rest all ball up right at the base of the stairs.

Funneled them into the stairs, blew them up with Splinter Weapon while the NPCs and their minions tanked it. Got a little scary towards the end when bodies ran out so the NPC minion master had nothing to use, but "Save Yourselves!" + Shield of Absorption allowed Little Thom in all of his level 10 glory to tank it successfully.
