New player need Ranger advice
BadAstley
I just started playing today. I created a Ranger and the build I was using was this. My question is what secondary profession would compliment this best? It says any but I'm not sure which would be best. Also, In the skill points it has a base number and then a plus then another number. Example: 11 + 1 + 2. What does that mean? How would I spend my skill points? Thanks.

Based on that build's recommended optional skills, you could do Warrior and pick up "Save Ourselves"... but I think any other profession would be fine as well. (I'm not the Ranger expert though...)
As for attributes, anything after a plus sign comes from a rune or inherent attribute to an armor piece. So, on that build, you'd use points for 11 Expertise, then add a mask with +1 Expertise and a Rune of Major Expertise (+2). Similarly, that build also calls for Major Wilderness Survival (on top of 10 pointed levels) and a Minor Marksmanship.
So, basically, just look at the first numbers when you're spending your attribute points with runes and headgear to satisfy the + numbers.

That specific build says Ranger/any because it does not use skills from any other profession. Therefore, you can have any profession.
Second professions do not give you any inherent effects. For example, if you're Ranger/Monk, but all your 8 skills are Ranger skills, you could be /Warrior, /Mesmer, etc., and it wouldn't make any difference at all.

I would go /W for SY (as suggested on the wiki page), /Mo for rebirth if pugging, or finding that you wipe alot, /Rt for splinter, or hard rez, /P for Find Their Weakness, or GFTE or Hard Rez.
Otherwise, just go with d-shot which is probably the best option if you can hit anything with it.

Hi There,
first of welcome to Guildwars, as with above posts the build you are looking at as you can see /any means any secondary you have on at the time.
Dont worry too much re secondary prof as..if you see a build that does require a certain secondary to fullfill its role the quite simply you can change you secondary profession to what you desire later in the game.
this does not mean when you change it you cannot revert back to the other later for eg. if you saved a build say R/Rit and you wanted say warr as another then you just load on the previous build.

As others have said, that build basically uses nothing but Ranger skills and therefore, it doesn't matter what secondary you have - unless you want to use a skill from another profession.
For the "optional" skill, you might consider getting a pet (as a body blocker) and using Comfort Animal. (Perhaps the build was put together back when you needed 2 skills to bring a pet.) If you do decide to bring a pet, you eventually could use Never Rampage Alone instead of Lightning Reflexes.
