Going Wireless

Hey all,

I've been looking into getting a wireless keyboard and mouse because I'm moving my computer into a bigger area and would like the convenience of not having to deal with wires.

So I did some research on wireless keyboards and mice and saw that they could apparently hinder your gaming performance. I was wondering if this was true for games like Guild Wars, Diablo 2, or Torchlight? (these are the games I primarily play)

Also if you have any good wireless keyboard and mice suggestions (preferably around $100 or lower), feel free to share them with me ^^

PS - please don't say to just go with wired keyboards and mice, they probably do have better performance compared to wireless keyboards and mice but I would like to go wireless instead

some of the more pricey wireless options are pretty good.... Razer makes some high quality gaming stuff, but they are pretty expensive. Depending on your gaming style and what you are accustomed to quality wise already you may or may not be very happy with a $40 wireless combo from your local retailer. What's your current mouse and keyboard?

As for gaming style, I usually click-to-move (and I click-to-move ALOT, especially when doing PvP with my warrior where I need to quarterstep often). Not much really happens with the keyboard, just using skills and sometimes I need to switch between weapon sets (F1-F4) really fast. So far my keyboard and mouse have been working well for me, but I'd like to go wireless now.

First think more about what you are trying to do. List the pros of wired and wireless.
Wired
Pros - Doesn't need batteries and is lighter
Cons - Wires

Wireless
Pros - No wires
Cons - !Batteries! and heavier

Trust me wireless isn't better I thought it was at one point but I wasted 16 batteries in one month duracell and the rechargeable batteries will last long in terms of replacing them, but as you use them the drain is a lot faster.

By the way the lighter the mouse the faster it is for me. I am not sure about anyone else.

The best way is to have your game-space well thought out.

I HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHLY recommend getting an LX7 mouse from Logitech. Logitech currently doesn't sell them anymore, which I honestly don't know why. The feedback on the mouse is AMAZING and I personally own 4 of them. Batteries last FOREVER in these suckers (no sarcasm; I have had the same batteries in my mouse for at least 2 months now).

In order to buy one, you would need to order it off eBay. There are tons of them on there and that is where I get mine. I have never had any problems with them, fault-wise. I have never had one break on me, either.

This mouse, if it were not for it, my interupts would be so crappy due to having to manually click the skill bar or press the number button. The mouse has 2 extra buttons on the top that you can hotkey. Thanks to this baby, I can rupt 3/4 casting spells at-will.

I am also a left-handed person so finding a mouse that allows usage of extra buttons for lefties is damn near impossible to find. But, thankfully, the extra buttons are global due to their positioning on the mouse.



If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. I would be willing to bet off my first born child that this mouse would fit you perfectly. That is how positive I am you would love this mouse.

compared to the stuff you are using now anything will be an upgrade, esp. with a new mouse. Once you get a mouse with programmable buttons, you will never go back to a simple one.... ever.... Do be aware that all wireless mice have latency, which can be an issue for online gaming - that is the main reason why "hardcore" gamers tend to use wired mice; it has very little to do with the convenience factor of no wires, it's all about latency, DPI, and response time.

It depends somewhat upon what you are doing. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse (MS) with my HTPC. I've played both GW and LotRO (Lord of the Rings Online) with them. For normal PvE play, I don't notice any lag or inaccuracy of movement - they seem to play normally. *

However, I don't do PvP, so I can't say whether or not it would affect play in that case, although that would certainly be where you would notice it more than in PvE.
I think that newer wireless keyboard/mice work a lot better than they used to, as far as lag, etc., goes.

* Although playing on a 46" HDTV may sound good at first, it's not necessarily all that great. When I sit in my comfy LazyBoy and play on the HDTV, the screen, because of the relative seating distance, appears to be smaller than when using my desktop. So, I spend a disproportionate amount of time looking around the screen trying to make out objects and read small text. This tends to make any lag, etc., from the wireless keyboard less noticeable.

I've been looking into JonnieBoi05's suggestion and I stumbled upon this wireless desktop set, Logitech's LX310

It looks like the mouse is the same as the LX7, and it has a keyboard that looks like it would fit well for me. Could the mouse in the package be a LX7? And do you experience latency, as Elder mentioned, with the mouse, Jonnie?

Would you guys recommend getting this?

I have the LX310 set. The mouse is indeed an LX7, and battery life and response time are excellent. I personally really like the placement of the forward/back buttons - impossible to hit them by mistake.

I don't use the keyboard because it has the non-standard Insert/Home/Delete/etc keypad (as a programmer I need my keyboards to be the same everywhere).

If you are starting to get into wireless accessories, it is very worthwhile to invest in a battery charger (go for 10-at-at-time) and lots of "ready-to-use" batteries (they're the ones that don't lose their charge much sitting on the shelf). Look for at least 2100mAh for AA batteries (2500mAh or higher is obviously preferred).

The post right above mine is correct. While Logitech does not sell the LX7 seperately anymore, you CAN buy them as a package like with the link you provided. I don't know how my mind overlooked that package deal, I see it nearly every time I go to Wal-Mart when I go through the computer accessories section. I think it would be smart to buy that, actually.


The mouse, used for gaming, I have never had any type of problems with. I've been using the mouse for years and I am still an extremely happy camper when it comes to the LX7. So, either way, it's a win-win for you if you decide to buy the package deal of the keyboard+mouse (once more just so I don't seem dodgy: yes, the mouse in there is indeed the LX7).




Edit: I also recommend buying a rechargeable battery set (you can get the charger + batteries for a decent price also at Wal-Mart) since it would be much more convenient and much more cost efficient instead of buying one-time-use batteries that you just will throw away.

I prefer just a regular ball mouse to be honest. I have had both a wireless and a laser mouse and I still prefer the ball mouse for me. I had an issue with my laser mouse jumping all over the place especially with some of the elementalist animation. I don't know how many times my cursor would vanish and then all of a sudden pop up on the exit button and I would log out. Happened to me once on Slavers when I had Seve with a 1/3 life left. I was not happy. Switched mice and the problem was eliminated but it was money down the drain.

Razer is garbage, just like wireless keyboards and mice.

Your best bet is just getting some USB extension cords if you want to move around a lot, or use wireless at a minimum.

I tried a wireless mouse for a bit, and it gets very annoying when the batteries get low/die.

And they die really fast unless you plan on farmville or something equally as mediocre.

Gaming grade my ass.

Usually, they should last around 2 months (that's from personal experience and rather intensive GW gaming during the evenings and week-ends). It is true though that it gets really annoying when the batteries die on you all of a sudden.

Rechargeable batteries are a must imo and you should always have another pair charged for when the ones in the mouse die. If you are playing from a desk, wired is definitely the way to go. However if you plan on playing on the HDTV in your living room, then wireless may be more convenient.

Gone through two Wireless mice (although it was the early 2000's) those suckers ATE battereies up like crazy! Once one of the AA's exploded inside my old mouse. I had two wireless mice because the first one (Microsoft) started getting awful tracking errors as it aged ......... and was thrown at a wall too many times playing Diablo 2.

Having had most of razers range (due to sponsorship) I can honestly say they are not garbage. They have a lot of bad mice, agreed (doesn't any company). The old deathadder with firmware hack to remove error correction, was actually a solid mouse. The abyssus, is also pretty decent on the right pad. I've never found logitech mice that comfortable. The 518 was ok in its time, but it had error correction (not good for MMORPG's or FPS).

Personally I use a Steelseries Xai. There are probably better mice for FPS gaming, but to be honest, I'm at a level in games where aim really isn't all that important. It's got a great sensor (malfunction rate, customization and being able to lower/raise DPI/CPI is nice).

Don't get me wrong, I'm really anti how the market has gone with trying to con people that high DPI is more important than malfunction rate, but for mmorpgs, I find 1800DPI and above, decent. 400DPI Microsoft WMO for me, just isn't great in a MMORPG/RTS.

In my opinion, consider the razer abyssus, razer deathadder and the steelseries xai, or kinzu. The only thing I have against the xai is I'm really fussy about weight (abyssus is a lot lighter) and the shape isn't as nice as some of the razer models.

Wireless is terrible. If you don't care about having the pointer move fast, look at something like a wheelmouse optical.

My post is no disrespect to you, but I think it is only right that others benefit from threads made. Wireless really is terrible, and as much as you probably dislike that it's considered not really helping you. It is, but you'll probably only realize it after you make the mistake of spending lots of money.

Wireless mice are heavy as well. They're not just bad, but they're heavy bad. My main issue with them is that they are laggy.

For keyboard. I can only recommend filco, happy hacking, etc. Not anything made by logitech, microsoft etc. They've all got terrible switches in.
