1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.
At least a month in advance. The earlier the better.
2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?
They look good to me.
3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.
I prefer prizes that do not require the winner to divulge any personal information such as Address and Real Name
4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.
It all depends on how much the judges/organizers can handle.
5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?
Yeah, I agree with this one. Only downside is that there could only be one entry for a certain category.
6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?
yeah I like this award if it's not there yet.
7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?
I think one party should be fine? I am not against more though.
8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?
I don't mind.
9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?
Nope. (Illustration is my preferred art)
10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
Both GW/GW2 should give be fine IMO
11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?
It depends on my workload but right now it's kind of a no (not to mention I am having an Art Block if it needs to start soon). I'd watch at the very least.
25 Aug 2010 at 15:55 - 13
OMG I've missed this place. And you guys. I'm glad I decided to peek in here.
I'm too lazy to answer each question individually, so here. If we start the workshop two months before Halloween, that kinda means...now. Though I wouldn't be against that idea. Categories we had before were fine, I can't really think of anything new to add or really change. In-game prizes seem more popular, though I wouldn't say no to real life stuff (want an artbook damnit XD). Maybe make it an option?
I wouldn't mind attracting more people from other sites (I know there are GW comms/groups on livejournal and deviantart), but it might be easier to keep it hosted here or something. I don't think we should split things up that much, but maybe distinctions like writing, digital, traditional, and crafts could work. I like the smileyface award, but I may be biased, having won it last year :P I'm not really sure how to interweave it more into the game than we have, though I'd like to get more people to the parties. I wouldn't mind more exposure. Nothing I can think of as a category I like that's underrepresented. I think that if people want to do GW2-related art then they should be free to do so, just as if they want to stick with GW; so long as it's from the GW universe.
And I hope to participate! Considering I'm 0 for 3 on workshops so far >.> Yaaaaargh so busy.
...looks like I answered them all anyway. Oh well!
25 Aug 2010 at 16:26 - 14
Tzu to the rescue
YAY finally there will be workshop
10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
There are people who don’t know nothing about gw2 (me)
11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?
YES !!! I am already 30% in to my entry
26 Aug 2010 at 00:54 - 15
hey can we include a prize for biggest halloween art RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO i'd like to participate fully in a category
*munch*
also might wanna make that PAST art RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO
GO RED ENGINE GO RED ENGINE GO = wh0re
is brue and tzu submitting an entry this year?
26 Aug 2010 at 16:03 - 16
Well, first of all, hi everyone
It's gonna be a very super busy time for me the next few months, and seeing that GW/Anet judge people seem to hate both my 3D and chibi-style works, I'm not sure if I will enter.
However.
This workshop has been the most fun about GW contests, so I might reconsider.
Now, for Tzu's questionnaire:
1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.
Right now.
2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?
Categories last year were really nice. I can't think of any new ones now, but I'll think about it.
3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.
Personally, I prefer either gold, ectos, or miniatures. Real life rewards are nice too, but I wouldn't want anyone having to spend their RL money on that.
4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.
I'd vote for the workshop to stay on GWG.
5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?
As much as I'd like to be possibly the only one and hence first place in the 3D category ( ), I'd say nope.
6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?
I liked the smileyface award, but TBH I think we got some very nice critique from fellow artists and watchers-only alike last year already. I'm open to more rewards for them though. Might bring even more help to those who ask.
7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?
I missed the party last year, due to a time-zone mixup... >_>
I think one big end party should be fine, planned a long time in advance, since it's difficult enough to find a time and date that's good for the majority of people anyways. Mid-contest partys would just complicate things and most likely not that many people would show up besides the "regulars".
8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?
Yes. A little good publicity is always nice for artists.
9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?
No category comes to mind.
10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
Like someone said earlier, I wouldn't want to see artwork that is about the artist imagining what GW2 will be like, or looking at GW2 logos that are nicely drawn/carved/whateverd... The little info we know about GW2 should of course be allowed, including what we've seen in screenshots, videos, etc.
But only already seen/existing stuff.
11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010? Haven't made up my mind yet.
Cheers everyone
26 Aug 2010 at 20:58 - 17
Halloween 2010 came too soon... Last year I was hoping to loose some weight and try to make a necromancer costume, Dread Mask included (I've figured out how to make a dread mask with what I have in my garage, for the most part, surprisingly).
Aw well, not enough time for my life now. Maybe next year - or never.
27 Aug 2010 at 06:03 - 18
-hugz all around-
1.) Could be ASAP. Gives people a chance to work on it earlier. But the fact that you announced this now already gives people a heads up, so whenever really. =P
2.) The categories last year were great.
3.) Gold, ectos, COMMISSIONS (this is a great, new idea). RL prizes would probably encourage more people to participate.
4.) If you can figure out how to do that, then by all means. But depending on how many people participate you may have to add categories or up prizes for current ones.
5.) Yes. Although if you do it this way there should be very few if any sub-categories. Perhaps just a simple 1-3rd place for each category would be sufficient enough.
6.) xD Considering I probably wont be entering this year, that would be nice. But again it depends on how much reward is available. Winners get priority ofc.
7.) I loved the party! Even if it was a bit short and kinda fell apart at the end. =P I say we should have another one! More of just a social thing and rewards ceremony though, no need for games or trivia (unless someone offers to).
8.) Yes (for others).
9.) I myself am more partial to photography, but that can't really be considered in a game related contest. =P Though I do think that whatever you make should be photographed well.
10.) Dosen't have to be related to GW2, that will come in future events. Any GW2 themed halloween stuff should be welcomed (I'd love to see them!). Maybe it can be made into its own category if enough people are interested in making GW2 Halloween stuffs.
11.) Probably not =/ No time with school, job, bf time. If I can think of something though I will.
27 Aug 2010 at 06:25 - 19
It's like Tzu is bringing us all together! Aren't we missing Hoodie or something?? Where is Hoodie!
Hi Minami! Hi Tuna!
Oh and after Tzu talked about the RL prizes she has.. that's awesomesauce! I want RL prizes too =)
edit: CHARLIE DAYMAN
27 Aug 2010 at 13:21 - 20
Yes, where's Hoodie? Someone find him :P
Konig, you are making me annoyed that I know I don't have the time or money to make a costume this year (work + school + moving + wedding planning = oh hello there no time or money).
...also I keep feeling the desire to add an umlaut over the 'o' in your name :P
27 Aug 2010 at 13:33 - 21
I haven't seen Tzu on msn for a long time now... :S
Hi Yun! ^_^
27 Aug 2010 at 21:24 - 22
Feel free to add that umlaut - the only reason why it is Konig and not with the umlaut is due to my in-game character being unable to have the umlaut.
And sorry, don't mean to annoy you.
28 Aug 2010 at 20:53 - 23
what is this I dont even...
~
Ok here are my answers:
1.) The sooner the better.
2.) Maybe too many categories... I think 3-4 is enough...
3.) I dont care about rewards since Ill be the donor of in-game stuff. I would love that art book, though, Tzu...
4.) Completely based outside of Nolani. More sites the better!
5.) Yes!!!1 I dont want any lame plushies interfering...
6.) Uhm... sure.
7.) Big end party is enough I think.
8.) Yup.
9.) I think it is fine... cant think of anything...
10.) Yeah it should definitely be more related to GW2!
11.) Yes!
29 Aug 2010 at 00:11 - 24
I'm glad this is back!
If you would like, Tzu, I could ask to get some publicity on this thread from GW-en.com,GWmag and other places, in the hopes there is even more activity?
It's up to you of course!
Hope you all have fun!
29 Aug 2010 at 02:06 - 25
zomg its Blaz!
29 Aug 2010 at 09:19 - 26
Well... I got an idea for the contest... But I decided that I'll do it because of the Nolani community and the nice chat/talk and constructive criticism people give and receive here.
I will enter my piece into the official contest if I decide to do that later on, but that remains to be seen. Depends on how i feel about my pic, and how other people like it too.
I started working on some textures, making sure to take screenshots of the progress, no matter how crappy it might look
Here's an UV layer on the model top, with my little message textured on it. xD
Wonder if anyone knows already what profession it will be ^_^
Of course this top will drastically change in appearance :P
(LOL jpg compression FTL)
29 Aug 2010 at 10:11 - 27
Mesmer? :3
You're going to do something 3d again?
29 Aug 2010 at 18:46 - 28
Tommy, nope, not a mesmer. Only the shape of that top is relevant really, and even that will change somewhat ^_^
And yeah, 3D. Maybe. We'll see how easy it is to create what I'm thinking of.
29 Aug 2010 at 21:33 - 29
Looks rangerisk.
30 Aug 2010 at 13:30 - 30
first off, I dont have the internets in my apartment because of some [wrote the whole story then deleted it because of WOO off-topic much]. Point being that I can only use the university internets, and Ive been too busy to bring a laptop and get online before now. Hopefully I can do the internets in my own, comfortable chair at home by the end of today, or tomorrow. Sorry for being awol so much. :/
Tommy: is it too late now? D: So sorry about that, but if you paid out of your own pocket or some such, just remind me when I get on msn and Ill meet you in-game and give you the gold.
YunSooJin: Ill be submitting something this year, but I dunno about Blue. likely he will procrastinate until the last week and then decide to participate or not.
BladeWind: Sure, absolutely! I think, if Guildmag lets me, I would love to cover the workshop myself, but I havent talked to them about it yet. ^^' Will do next time I get online, but my time is almost up already (have a lab course in 10).
Minami: My money is on necromancer!
Also, welcome back everyone! Blaz, Konig, Kiya, Aeronwen, Espy, Invertation, Raven, Frostkisses, Verene, Penguin and Tuna! It's unnervingly nice to see those familiar names in red on grey. frostkisses, I'm really looking forward to your contribution!
I will make the artbook award an option. Maybe a "best of the workshop" award, which you can sign up to compete for if you are OK with giving me your real (last) name and address so I can ship the artbook to you. If we get too few participants I would cancel the whole ordeal as it would be a shame to hand out a signed artbook (and pay for shipping) just like that. That sound reasonable to you?
30 Aug 2010 at 14:02 - 31
1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your entry to the official art contest tends to be around the 20th of October.
SOONER THE BETTER
2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? Do you have any favourites, or any new ideas to add? Do you think we have too many or too few categories?
CATEGORIES WERE GREAT LAST TIME
3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Money, ectos, weps, consumables, commissions, etc.? Would you accept real-life rewards, such as an artbook or the Ghosts Of Ascalon book? I would be the one to handle the shipping.
W/E ppl donate
4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? keep in mind that this would invite guild wars players and artists from every web-based community site, not just GWG.
THE MORE THE MERIIER
5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently?
NO
6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?
7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that?
i dont know
8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public?
idk
9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop?
idk
10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?
no
11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010?
yes.
P.S; Tzu where do you get your crafting foam from?
31 Aug 2010 at 03:46 - 33
Tzuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
1.) When would you like the workshop to open? Maybe a month and a half in advance or so.
2.) Which winner categories would you like to see? The categories from last year's contest seemed good.
3.) What kind of prizes would you prefer? Gold, ectos, consumables, mini pets, etc. Though the art book is a really nifty idea.
4.) Do you think the workshop should be partially or completely based outside of Nolani, such as in a blog, deviantart or an imageboard? I don't see a problem with giving the contest more exposure and bringing out people from all corners of the interwebs.
5.) Do you think we should have separate art categories for different prizes, so that costumes, paintings, props, 3D, writing, photo-manipulations (the list goes on) are judged independently? That might be a good idea depending on the diversity of submissions. Last year's contest yielded a fairly large variety in entries.
6.) Do you think we should reward "watchers" more than we already have (the "smileyface" award), so that even though you're not contributing as an artist, you should be rewarded for good critique and helpful comments?Doesn't seem necessary.
7.) Would you like the workshop to be more interweaved with in-game Guild Wars than it has been? We only had a small party last time, should we do more than that? Sure, the more the merrier.
8.) Would you want to be featured in a larger scale (podcasts, blogs, Guildmag) so that your art and/or progress becomes more public? Exposure is always welcomed.
9.) Is there a category of art you are partial to, which you think is not represented properly in the guild wars art community? Would you want us to push this further into the light with the workshop? Can't think of any at the moment.
10.) Do you want this workshop to be more related to GW2? Or not at all?[ b]I don't mind seeing some GW2 themed entries (i.e. Blue's submission last year).[/b]
11.) Finally (for now ); WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING IN THE HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 2010? If my semester doesn't murder me.
31 Aug 2010 at 05:59 - 34
Tzu, you got it ^_^
As for the rest, I'll let it unravel in the workshop >
(I know I'll need help with some things )
EDIT: By the way, if anyone has any tips on why GW and my computer freezes every single time I try to load the game, please do let me know :S
It loads the loading screen (after I choose my character), bar on bottom reaches 100%, then the whole computer freezes and I have to do a rough restart
Also, it doesn't matter if I try and load a character in Kamadan, Shing Jea, GTOB, or an empty Guild Hall...
31 Aug 2010 at 06:25 - 35
reinstall gw? or it might be actually an issue with your HDD, in which case you'd need to replace it. i could suggest a faulty Video card but those usually have other symptoms too.. :s
31 Aug 2010 at 06:37 - 36
Of course you can make a post yourself Tzu! Oh and yeah, I'm keeping an eye on this forum I got something in my planning stages already for this years Halloween
31 Aug 2010 at 06:39 - 37
HDD issue? Jeez I hope not.... This is my laptop, not a desktop (
I'll try and reinstall GW tomorrow... sure hope it'll help. Thanks for the tips Yun
02 Sep 2010 at 15:03 - 38
so are Tzu and Minami back online in comfortable chairs?
02 Sep 2010 at 19:57 - 39
Yay! I actually thought of an idea, that I might just stick with (normally I change ideas all the time )
Also I was thinking (and no, not because of my contestentryidea ) maybe a Most Original Idea prize would be cool? So regardless of the medium used, the most original idea (this could be funny, this could be a very unkown lore thing, just something that fits the theme extremely well and wouldnt be likely that another person would come with that idea) gets rewarded. Just a thought.
03 Sep 2010 at 09:22 - 40
I have my own internets back and in a comfortable chair, Aeronwen! XD
Deatgs Corrupter: I get my craft foam in a crafts shop (where they sell paints, yarn, beads and the like). The staff there actually don't have a clue what they're selling - if I ask for craft foam they say they dont know what Im taking about, and the item is just registered as "paper supplies" in their system, so yeah. Helps to know what youre looking for if you want to find a local supplier. Otherwise there are plenty of online sellers. From time to time you can get really good wholesale bargains on ebay. Hope that helps
YAY CHARLIE DAYMAN
Dutch Sunshine: yay! That's very kind of you! I will make a post in the Guildmag forum too, regarding content. ^^
Tommy: I think we debated having a most original reward before (and maybe we did, at some point, I dont remember) but it is difficult to pick a winner there. Whats original and what isnt is heavily opinion-based and has the judges disagree. We could try, but then we need some prerequisites, some guidelines which we all use for picking a winner.
