Repeating Weekly Events
Karate Jesus
This is probably the wrong time to bring this up, considering that our weekly event isn't even announced yet and may end up throwing all of this off, but....
What do you think about the Weekend Events repeating last year's schedule?
Do you like it or not? Is it GW:Autopilot or is it nice to know exactly what events will be coming up?
Personally, I'm on the fence. I like knowing what event is upcoming to pre-plan title grinding stuff, but I get pretty worried when the auto-pilot switch is flipped....especially since we haven't seen an update in a while. It makes me wonder what Anet's staff does all day.

some events are nice to have set dates (halloween, wintersday etc)...others, hm....outside of the trade off with one week being pvp and the next pve--I do wish they would add a few new ones (thread in sanitarium)......but since (yes the mantra) they are working hard on getting gw2 out, they dont have the manpower to put into it so I understand they probably wont be updating this.

I was thinking about this the other day and seeing when the Double SS/LB points weekend occurred.
It's nice to plan ahead plus it's pretty low maintenance for the live team just to repeat the system, however they could use the weekends to promote play in certain areas of the game that are dying.

Hmmm i really would want them weekends to be a bit more random, and bring back events that dont come along anymore, like free fow/uw access, triple dye weekend, festive item drops, gamer weekend.
MisterB
I'm all for automation of weekend events so the limited resources of the Live Team may be spent on new content, skill balances, or anything more interesting than hand cranking the events. That was actually one of their goals if you recall: to automate as much as possible of weekend events and festivals in order to allow time for other things.

I dont mind, cus well, i dont even care about the weekly events

I don't see why they can't have a pvp and a pve event running concurrently the same weekend. For those that mostly just stick to one or the other, they only get an event every second weekend. Now, events like double luxon/kurzick might count as both pvp and pve, but why can't I, say, get double EotN rep points the same weekend that GvG gets double Balth faction or whatever?
Black Metal
there's something to be said for this. If someone really needs a specific event, they can plan for it beforehand.
Is there a simple source to see what each weekend for this year is anticipated to be?

If it's the same again (and it has been since April), then it should be Triple key/lockpick drops AND double your luck points weekend.

Sounds Ok, but if ANET schedules Cathan New Year on the same day as the Super Bowl again, I am going to fly out to CA and beat someone about the face and head!
Silverblad3
I think it is fine but wish they would basically confirm last years schedule so guilds can plan events in advance. So have a full 2010 schedule.
I wouuld love it if they would make costume brawl twice a year however!!!

On topic: I think its great to be able to plan ahead for whats going to be coming at the weekend, like stocking up on lockpicks before this weekend. It would be nice if they gave us some new ones and for the love of god give us another event with the party time buff!! need my title for half price
PS. rofl at spell check trying to get me to spell realise with a Z, theres irony for you.

It does not matter if the rest of the world cares about the superbowl, we dont give two hoots about the world cup so we are even.
Rocky Raccoon
“Realize” is the dominant spelling in the US, and “realise” in the UK. Spelling checkers often try to enforce these patterns by labeling the other spelling as an error; but it is good to know that most dictionaries list these as acceptable spelling variants.

ANET can make it whenever they want, it does not have to be "dictated". Pick any Celestial Alignment for all I care, as long as it is not during the SuperBowl ( for the third time ).

CathanSuperNewBowlYear aside, I think Silver makes sense on this from a planning standpoint, very useful to lock this down.

On topic~it is nice having a set schedule for the same reasons that many have already said.

KJ, let's get down to brass tacks here. GW1 is old, GW2 is right around the corner now, and the Live Team & Test Krewe are working on dervish's skills followed by the paragon's. Automating GW1 events and other routine functions is to be expected. Sure, nobody likes the fact that GW1 isn't recieving attention the way it used to, but the undeniable truth is that the game's fun factor has been severely exhausted at this point.
I personally don't like anything being automated because it gives the impression that there's no care or involvement [due to laziness, disinterest, etc.], but on the same token it's not necessarily a bad thing to have. I mean, it sure beats not having any automation at all, no weekend events, no updates [ever], etc., etc.
If anything, I think they should offer weekly events for both PvE AND PvP simultaneously so that one side of the community doesn't have to wait another week or two just to get the event they want. It'd also stimulate activity a bit more prior to the release of GW2. That's just my two cents. If any of this seems abrasive, please disregard that emotion as it wasn't my intention to cause you any irk.

As your post and others have said, why not have PvP and PvE weekend events? Why not have triple dye drop weekends? Why not add more fun and random weekend events, like a randomly inserted Costume Brawl or something?
If this is the weekend schedule we're going to have for the next two years....I'd like a little more variety or creativity.

Off topic: Soccer is the least interesting sport known to man. It's clinically proven. 95% of lab rats subjected to soccer broadcasts have been observed bending the bars of their cages in order to thrust themselves upon the exposed end, thus committing Hari-Kari.

I think with the current servers as they are, having both pvp and pve weekend events running at the same time will create an implosion of enormous magnititude.

on topic: i like the idea of pvp/pve weekend split. Other then famring i come on nowadays to do some talking and to mess arround on the weekend events. If its PvP.. well i dont even bother getting on usually(all my friends are pve players and feel the same way so if its PvP its like:why the eff should we get on?). so yea i like the PvE/PvP weekend split.

Either way, I don't like the idea of having the Live Team spend time on mixing up the weeklies. I think they can spend their time in a better way. As KJ said, it does indeed make you wonder, where the current manpower is spent on exactly. I guess it takes only one Live Team member to coördinate the Test Crew on a daily basis, so theoretically they should have at least two people continuously working on something other than skill balances...
Mintha Syl
I've always been for PVP/PVE split for events, so that each side don't have to wait ages before having again the useful weekend.
As for automatation I don't know, I think I'm fine either way, not having it gives the impression someone cares abot the community, but having it gives a good planning option.

Does anyone else think it's weird that this weekend's event hasn't been announced yet?
If it's automated, it should already be up, right? Weird....

Random would be nice for a surprise. On the other hand, it would be nice if it did follow the same pattern, then could do some planning (yes, I do bother with weekend events if it's something that'll help with what I'm working on - rep points, faction, etc.).

Me. I'm checking all the time because it's weird, it's usually known a lot before...are they making a bad joke, like no weekend events anymore?

Either that or the automation broke. It's definitely strange. The event should start tomorrow and we don't even know what it is.

I don't think so. I mean...it's been automated since April and just automatically adding them on Mondays, so maybe it means they stopped the automation to announce something new.

Let's hope so. The game is in dire need of some new life. But, don't they still typically announce weekend events even when there's a Thursday update?
Freedom Bound said this on GWW and it makes sense:
I forgot they were out of town. They may have completely forgotten about us....

i dont mind seeing the events on auto-pilot this late in the game. gives us the ability to plan ahead kind of the same way i do with the z-missions. only real change i would like to see and have wanted to see for atleast 2 years now is extending them 2 more days. start them at noon on thursday and end them on tuesday. that way it gives everyone a chance to take advantage of whatever the event is. not everyone plays on the weekends and having 2 weekdays added on would allow those who miss the weekend to still get some weekday time in.
