Bad lag problem with GW recently, please help...

I've had Guild Wars running just fine for me for years. I took a long hiatus some time after EotN and had recently tried coming back a few months ago. Since then, the game has been more or less unplayable.

I'll try my best to describe it, but it seems like a lag issue. My connection's just fine and I don't have this issue on any other game, but while playing GW, I get consistent lag spikes. Every few seconds my ping seems to jump up to a really high number and then it drops back to normal. My toon, others' toons, and NPCs rubberband for me and my ping ends up averaging at about 300 or so. The game just doesn't run as smoothly as it used to.

I'm not sure if something changed technically within the past year or so that might've caused it while I was gone, but this is a big turn off, keeping me from coming back to the game. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know if there's something I can update or if I should reinstall the game or if I should give system specs (though I doubt that'd be needed, I've run GW on much older computers and GW itself isn't very graphic or resource intensive). Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the death of Guild Wars "Original"... aka Guild Wars, or Guild Wars 1.

You might want to consider deleting the old .dat file and re-downloading a new one to see if that helps, aside from that though, I don't have a clue what could be causing it.

They physically moved the servers a couple weeks ago, and are still tackling some lag issues on some of the servers. From the chatter in the forums, it appears the Euro servers are pretty stable for PvE, the Asian servers so far are pretty bad, and the Amer servers are sometimes good but often bad. My alliance has found decent results by gathering in Amer, but moving to Euro-Polish to actually play.

I would suggest you create a support ticket and document what time and what server where this is happening to you. They are actively working on this stuff now, so your issue would be of interest.

Alright thanks for the help guys I'll work on it. I've noticed it was a problem on several notes in the past, as in months rather than weeks but it's all still a possibility. I'll send in a ticket and try the Euro servers, as I've been playing in the American servers. Outside of that I'll try to find any other possible issues unless anyone else has some ideas. Thanks a lot!

Wow, only 300ms?! Enjoy. I have not been that low in over a year.

Honestly, that was just an average number I pulled out of my ass. Every 3 seconds or so it jumps up to like 2000+ and it's only 'normal' in between those jumps, which doesn't make it any more playable.

EDIT: I just checked in game, it seems to "average" out at about 1.2k ms.

yeah, GW ping has climbed up to the point that I don't really care to play anymore - not that I have much incentive to play anymore at this point anyway... not much left for 4yr players at this point, unless you have no RL responsibilities and can grind titles all day.

Yeh, and connection makes ZERO difference. Considering I have solid 250-350 pings now, which has ruined my play as a Mesmer almost entirely, it's absolutely a server side issue. I no longer play as a result of crappy servers.
