What will happen to gw1?
Garet1337
I'm probably not going to buy gw 2 because I don't agree with some of anets choices with gw 1 ( like removing half of PvP ) and don't feel like spending another $200 + just to see that happen again.
I just came back to guild wars a little bit ago and noticed the server problems and ( me being a PvPer ) how dead the game is becoming. What will happen in about a year after gw 2 comes out? Will gw 1 still even be playable? Will anet just give up on gw ( skill balances, game fixes, take servers down )
To all of u buying gw 2 good luck and I hope anet doesn't screw you over like they have me
Sorry if someone has posted this b4/ if I posted this in the wrong section. Did this on my iPod and didn't feel like zooming in

Looking at the number of updates since 2008 , i don't really think gw1 will be changed much after gw2 is released. And , considering the updates we're getting in gw1 pvp , i'd suggest to only play pve in gw2 ( dervish update coming soon , which will for sure not change anything in pvp ..)

First off, your reason for not wanting Guild Wars 2 is a fallacy. Hero Battles and Team Arenas were removed for good reason, and although they were replaced with something not as great (....Codex....), you can't expect that the same thing will happen with Guild Wars 2. Also, if something like that WERE to happen in GW2, it wouldn't be until years after release...and I'd say a game that you can play consistently and be entertained with for 2, 3, 4, or even 5 years is well worth the measly 200$ (don't even know about GW2 expansions yet, so 200$ may be completely off anyways). That being said, Guild Wars is an old game. I imagine it would end up being a little like Diablo 2, which even after a decade of servers being up is still running and still being updated (although very sporadically). People will still play and the servers will no doubt still be up, although the PvP community would no doubt be rather dead. I imagine people would still play to get HoM accomplishments to transfer to GW2 (depends on the rewards, really), just to play the storyline, participate in the tourneys, title grind, etc. It's still a good game, and is balanced well enough that it will have lasting appeal for years to come, even if there are rarely any more updates.

blah blah not buying gw2 cause of the state of gw1 even though its a totally different game and now gw1 is dead... wish people would stop spouting this out -_-
Judge GW2 for GW2 and there are still many many people playing GW1
thread is pointless close it.

GW1 was always meant to be played for a while and then left for other games while the taste was still good. Everyone who plays it when he's already bored with it (including me, can't give the bloody thing up...) is essentially playing it wrong.

OP: Maybe you can trade your gw account on runescape. Get over it, dude. Some things didn't work, some things did. Overall they did a great job with gw. What they've released about gw2 so far has most of us excited. But in the end, until we play it, we won't really know if it will be worth it.
LoneManWolf
personally i agree with the op
i won't ever purchase another ncsoft/anet game ever again
aion looked like fun but just b/c it was made by that crappy company i refuse to purchase it
they lost me with their horrible service
3 1/2 weeks to get my account password back with every single proof they required given the first 2 hours...
3 1/2 weeks... fail
the service of the company is crap
as far as the ingame updates and such... personally i think they have shot this game to shit

I like how really only 2 people actualy answer the question xD my opinion is my opinion and this isn't a how will gw 2 do thread, but still I like peoples reasoning... so I guess if I didn't like Microsoft I should still buy their next version of windows instead of moving to apple? If I had a problem with gw 1 i would stop playing it, it's not the game I don't like it's the company . Of course there are other reasons I'm not getting it like I wouldn't b able to invest much time into the game cause of school and work.
So can we actualy go back to the question about gw 1?

oh just thought I'd throw this in there since people r still going to talk about not buying a franchise based on previous games, let's say I bought idk Halo and Halo 2 and I didn't like them, I should still buy the rest of the Halo series just cause it's a new game and not judge em on how the previous games were? Maybe I should see the new twilight movies coming out and not judge cause the first look like they r made for preteen girls...

They promised to keep the servers up as long as there's people playing. For sure, as a lot of people will move to gw2, difficulties playing with other people will increase a lot. But I really hope the devs won't abandon the game completely and still give attention to it, as happened with other games (see Divine Ashes's post).
Personally, I'm not moving so I'll stay, and lot of other people plan to do the same or switch between them. Also, probably new players will come anyway. So not a ghost town in the making, but for the rest only time wll tell.

Keep in mind that GW1 was based (financially) on the idea of selling "Campaigns" at regular intervals, and I would assume that GW2 will be the same (unless they decide at some point to start work on GW3 ) They gain no financial benefit from simply having people online - no monthly fee.
So, unless they turn GW1 into more of a micro-transactioned model, there is really no incentive for them to continue spending time and resources on it.
They may keep GW1 running for a fairly long time though (without updates), if the drain on resources is low enough.
TheodenKing
No one is telling you to buy gw2 out of loyalty. But don't you think you'd want to look into gw2 before you make that decision? Sure, it might be something that doesn't live up to the hype. On the other hand, it might be (in terms of popularity) one of the biggest MMOs of the next decade. You are entitled to shun Anet. Nobody will care except maybe the people you've befriended in the game.
I for one, like gw more than the other online games I've played for a number of reasons. Does it have issues? Of course. They've done plenty I didn't like. But compare it to anything else out there. You won't find a perfect game or design team, or support team. It does not exist. What these guys/gals did that set them apart, is create a business model that attracted people that don't like pay-to-play. And they did it successfully.
As for what will happen to gw, I would expect they will devote lesser resources to it than they are currently, but still proportionate to the needs. There likely won't be any new content in gw once gw2 is released. Skill balances will be minimal. Customer support will hopefully be even better, because even though they may have a few less bodies in the chairs, there will be dramatically less players.
I don't think gw will be abandoned by Anet in the near future, as they've tied things into the game such as HoM. That means that to some extent, in order to keep the gw2 customer base content, gw must still be a viable game (at least for pve).

Fail analogy is fail, you're comparing different scenarios. GW2 will be have a completely different feel and gameplay than GW1. First example, level cap will be 80. On top of that, Anet have accepted where they have gone wrong and is the reason why they have their entire studio (bar 5/6) working on the project.
Back to the actual question. I wouldn't be surprised if Anet decide to continue GW1 alive as much as they can because of title grinds and their worth in Gw2. But I equally wouldn't be surprised if they shut down GW1 after a few months of GW2 to allow players to focus more on GW2 achievements/progression, rather than fapping around GW1 for the possible unlockable-uber-awesome-GW1-hairband.
If they're smart, they'll keep GW1 alive for as long as possible to keep everyone happy. After all, no one's going to be annoyed with a game their not actively playing.
Spookii
I've heard that they'll update (as often or less often than they do now) and still do the annual festivals (with hats) but that's about it. Don't ask where I heard it, it's been so long ago that I can't remember.
And as far as everyone telling him that his reasoning for not buying Guild Wars 2 isn't good enough...rofl. This is a Q&A thread, not a 'debate useless topics' thread. If he doesn't want to buy it because pink bunnies don't play a starring role in the storyline, it's his opinion. Answer his question and go rage elsewhere.

Hope I helped!

GW1 will be like Diablo II. It will be up as long as people keep playing. It will get periodically updated. Plus Anet will still hold festivals, which I know I will still come back too.
(On a side note: Anet is probably one of the most customer friendly companies out there. I don't know why you don't like them...)

This is an NCSoft published title we're talking about. The servers will be yanked as soon as they feel they've made all the money they can from the game.

Since Guild Wars has been around for a little over 5 years now, of course the player base will drop and certain features will change for the better or worse. Like skill updates, skill nerfs, content removal such as Hero Battles or just simply the way people now play the game. Most now just take a overpowered player build and a overpowered hero build with them and play the game alone.
Like the others have said don't compare GW1 to GW2. GW2 is going to be a completely different game. New game mechanics, new fighting mechanics and much more.
That's like me saying I'm not going to buy Fallout New Vegas because the graphics in the first Fallout game where bad and I didn't like the fighting system in it.
