When I'm standing in the middle of nowhere inside an instance, my ping is about 188~210ms. This is also what I get from tracert.

But when I'm in town with other players, or fighting monsters, my ping jumps up to 350-400ms!

What's going on? Why am I lagging so much more just from being around other things? And yes, I have installed the Leatrix Latency Fix.

My ping doesn't "spike". Either I'm alone without any monsters around and my ping is ~200ms, or I'm near other monsters/players and my ping is 300~400ms. I've tried it at all hours of the day and it's the same. In fact, the two screenshots I included were taken within 5 minutes of each other.

Where theres no data packets being transferred(i.e standing still, alone) ofcourse the ping is going to be lower than when monsters are getting nuked, loot assigned, people running in 8 different directions. Its normal.
If you're asking why its that much of a difference, many others and myself will tell you its your ISP. 300~400ms isnt that bad anyways. Thats normal for me.

So would that be an issue of bandwidth or quality of service?

QoS, not bandwidth. Guild Wars uses tiny amounts of bandwidth.

This could be due to packet loss, either at your house switch, or one of the many many hops going to Guild Wars.

Those last hops seem to be the bad cookies. You might want to contact ANET about it and see if they can investigate those issues on your behalf. Sometimes they can assist in resolving the issues.

For the past few days I've been having connection issues with GW as well. Suddenly GW will just hang, and not even realize I've disconnected. I ran a tracert, and the problems start around hop 20, the same IP as yours - 64.25.32.62 times out.

Oh, and I'm in Finland. So definitely somewhere further up the chain than our ISPs.

Keep seeing the title of this and thinking it says "Ping goes up when i'm aroused".

How long has this been going on for? Most latency issues just go away after a while due to issues in some random node.

Out of curiosity, do you find your ping is even worse when there's AoE fire and/or minions involved? I've been having this problem for at least a year. Back when I did AB a lot it was really noticeable. As soon as I got near a shrine - boom, lagspike.

You gotta also remember, sitting in an instance compared to a town is going to be extremely different from each other.

When sitting in an instance, the mobs are the same each time, same skins, no changes to anything. So it doesn't have to load something new every time you enter.

Where is, sitting in town you are seeing all the players with their own dye colors, armor combinations, what they are doing, and as well, any holidays going on. A Town is always changing over and over with players leaving and entering, so the game has to load all the content constantly whenever you are in a town.

One person enters the town while you are there, you have to load that persons skin, face, hair, colors, armor combinations, dye colors, costumes, etc etc. It has to do that for every person in the same district as you. Alot of loading compared to an instance which will always be the same and never change.

So yes, your ping will always be higher in town than in an instance.
