Wait or go ahead

A couple of years ago I played Guild Wars heavily but then I got sidetracked and then my computer got whipped so I stopped playing. I tried installing it on my new computer and after changing my password, I can not log in. I keep getting a "Cant find your account on records" error. Did I not get on long enough for them to delete my account. I really want to start playing again and I am willing to just buy another copy if need be but I heard the it may be better off to wait for the second one. What do you guys think?

ANet do not delete accounts. Maybe your username is wrong. You can try contacting support and give them as much information as you can remember. CD Keys if you still have them. They may help you, but it'll probably take a few days (response is slow).
Anyway, if you want to play the first game, you might as well. Even if you have to buy a new copy, the whole set is cheap and it'll give you background information and some cosmetic benefits in GW2. There's still 6 months if not longer to the second game so there's heaps of time to enjoy it.

Even when after I served a temporary ban and they accidentally perma-banned me afterwards, they did not delete my account. They simply froze it. After I talked to support, they apologized and everything was back to normal.
Why would they delete accounts that essentially are their own property? they have no reason to.
Back to OP: There's still a long time for you to build up some titles for the wait of GW2, but you'll be surprised how long it will take to restart an account. Really look for as much information about your current account as possible and hope that support can do something for you. If your account has followed the same trend, RMTs might have gained access to your account and played with it a little, even if you haven't played in years.
Best of luck.

ANet already said that they never delete accounts not to mess up with their database, or something along this line. If you want your account to be deleted, you have to provide strong reasons for them to do it, otherwise they don't.
At least, this is what i remember.

Is that the exact error message you are receiving? Or is it "We don't recognize your account login information. Please try again."? That message could mean you are not giving enough login info. You need to enter
Account ID (email address you registered originally)
password
character name
If you can't remember a character name, then contact [email protected] and put NEED CHARACTER NAME in the subject line. Give them your account ID (they don't need the password) and any account details you have - access keys, name, address, date created, etc.

I have to agree with Darcy. Perhaps you are not putting in a character name in the bottom entry box.
back when you played it was not required, so maybe you didn't notice the entry box. If you remember a name of one character, enter it into the box and you should be fine. if not, contact support.
