So here's the story;
About 4 years ago, a former friend of mine introduced me to the magnificent world of Tyria. He tossed me one of his old accounts for 10eur so all was good. Now, 4 years later I have big issues. The e-mail adress the account was created with does not exist anymore, nor did I have acces to it (it was his fathers e-mail). Back then he did let me make a new password which he didn't know and never knew so there isn't anything he can do anyway. Is there any way for me to change the e-mail adress (account name) to my current e-mail? And if there isn't, will I still be able to link this account to my future GW2 account?
Any help is much appreiciated, thanks in advance.

First, technically, you're not allowed to transfer your account to other persons, so expect no help from Anet.
Second, the email address is the name of the account and cannot be changed. However, you don't need to actually have access to the email account, so it will only become an issue if the ownership of the GW account comes into question.

You can't change your login name (the old email) however you can change your contact email.
If you can can currently login to the account then you can go to the Edit Details option and change the contact email.
We don't know how the account's will be linked yet, could be with the account details, or the NCSoft account etc.
Hopefully you won't have any problems with the account it isn't allowed to sell on accounts and dtails so if you have to contact support for any reason you could run into problems.

If the email address doesnt exist anymore, can't you make it? Although I guess if it was hotmail.com or something you can't really make it since I think it's live.co.uk or something now, at least for me.
I doubt there will be a confirmation type email sent when linking our accounts to GW2 (but don't quote me on that). Isn't it supposed to be through NCSoft? So as long as you know the email and password you should be ok (I'll keep my eyes crossed for you, I mean fingers ).

Try to see if your friend has access to the keys, show them the keys to proove you own the account, get the email changed and youre good to go. The login name is an email address, but it's also just a simple string of unique text.. It is meaningless when it comes to an actual email address.

This is one of the reasons why sharing/trading accounts is against the ToS.
If your story is true, then it is a sad one for ANET cannot do anything for you since they don't have access to the email address either. This is why we have a ToS; to have a reason for them to deny service when there is nothing they can do.

Basically, don't expect any help at all from Anet.
It is against the ToS to sell ingame items for real money. Your friend sold you his account for real money, thus he broke the contract he agreed upon, and that account will most likely be banned when Anet finds out. Probably not a good idea to be telling everyone here that you bought his account for real money as Anet visits this site.

We believe (although it has not been confirmed by ArenaNet) that it will be necessary to link your GW and GW2 accounts through NCSoft master account. If he already did this then all of his accounts are connected and you cannot link the one you are using to a master account.

I had no idea back then it wasn't allowed (neither did he I think), we were 12. Back then the account only had prophecies, I added all the campaigns later on. I still have every single key. Adress/birthdate I don't know. The e-mail has @... where ... is an internet provider that went bankrupt about a year ago so that doesn't help much. I am going to try and change my contact e-mail and then try and link it to a NCsoft master account (hasn't happened yet). If that don't work, I'm going to contact support and explain the whole situation, I do have acces keys to show them but hopefully they won't go banrage and make me say bubye to my account :P.
Edit:
So I got my NCsoft account updated, now how do I tie my GW account to it?

Go to 'Manage Games/Keys/something' then you just have to input each of your GW keys from the game card that was either in the box or sent digitally.
That should link the two together.
One important thing is security though, make sure you at least use completely different passwords for the two accounts, try to make your passwords as strong (complex) as possible.

Just choose edit account from the guild wars log in or character select screen and then choose change email.
If I remember correctly it will send a message to both the old and the new email address. You do have to reply on the new one but if there is no reply on the old one the account will automatically change after a specific amount of time - unless they have changed the process in the last year or so (at least this worked for me last year when I had closed a hotmail account and wanted to move my guild wars log-in email to another one).
(Yup - just checked - as long as you are not already tied to a master account you can change.
The waiting period is 7 days unless the old email account replies or the email to the old account bounces back to anet - in which case the change is immediate.
Of course, if someone does have access to the old email they will get a notice of an account change and could cause problems for you if they want to be mean.
And, once again, this only works if not already linked to a master account. If you do not have the change email option then chances are pretty good your friend connected the prophecy key to his account - maybe without realizing it was for your account instead of one of his)

Oh, and if you do have to contact support just tell them that you no longer have access to the old email address because you changed ISP or it went bankrupt - I would not tell them about getting the account from a friend. |
EEK!
When I go to change e-mail adress it only gives me a link to NCsoft, so that means it's tied to a master account I don't have the name/pass/email of. Uh ma gawd. I'm going to try and retrieve some info I'll post here when I made some progress.

Not much you can do since I don't think ANet unlinks accounts from the master - they claim they can't but it is probably just cause they don't want to bother.
If you are lucky your friend made separate master accounts for each of the gw accounts and can give you the info for that master account. Otherwise I suspect you are kind of stuck sharing a master account with a friend. In which case, be nice to him and make sure he stays your friend.

Well quite some time ago we had a few arguements and I barely see the guy nowadays. He doesn't bother with GW at all anymore so that's nothing to worry about. Tried to figure some stuff out but he doesn't have anything GW related anymore, which doesn't surprise me because he's a GW hating WoWjunkie :P. And trough my account on the game itself theres nothing I can do either. Won't suck THAT bad if I can't take my HoM stuff to GW2 but it would be a bit lame. Well thanks for your help, guess there isn't really a solution for the problems I got myself in. Fingers crossed you only need your account name and password to tie your account to GW2! haha.
