One way to prevent thieves - possible action by ArenaNet
pumpkin pie
With the released of the HoM calculator, more and more people are buying a lot of stuffs to fill their HoM.
Today, I saw someone selling an undedicatedd mini creatadon for 25e .... i had one of those. I believe there are only 40k of those minis being given out by the online magazine. One of those is mine. Then this idea came to me.
When someone reported a stolen/hacked account, ArenaNet, would inventigate, after the investigation, can Arenanet please delete all the stolem items and gold forever from the game? please and thank you.
Fine you know, ArenaNet, if you are not giving us back our hacked stuffs, for whatever reasons, you may need lots of works to trace everything etc, and you ArenaNet isn't going to give us back anything, but I want that if the items are stolen that these items be immediately erase from the game when a player report hacks and such, if ArenaNet isn't giving it back to me, don't let someone else have them.
I think this will minimize thieves wanting to hack player's accounts.
Thank You.

Big problem is people who trade legitimately could be getting RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed over for buying that mini from what appears to be an upstanding seller blah blah blah
As for the argument of not getting rid of items and what not they sell and this and that.
Whats to keep a person from trading between accounts? O yes I will sell this mini panda to my alt for 100k.

What you're saying is that.... I can sell you my Panda for XXXXe... Then report it stolen to Anet... They delete it from that person's account and I get Ectos and laugh at the person who now has lost their ectos and has nothing to show for it?

^^ your mini panda is stolen?
This apply to accounts and items related to accounts that are reported hacked, once ArenaNet did an investigation all the items from ligitimate hacked accounts should be deleted.
with and investigation.

'With an investigation' doesn't really cut it when we're talking about Anet. How many people have they mistakenly banned for botting? However, unlike botting, once you delete the items, the process is irreversable and the items are gone forever. In an ideal world where Anets facilities work perfectly this would be a good idea. But in an ideal world everyone would have good knowledge about information security and not get hacked* so it's a bit redundant.
*It's not possible to be completely hack proof, but as long as you're careful you shouldn't be running any risks.

Here is how it works:
1) RMTer breaks into your account
2) He liquidates whatever he can
3) He proceeeds to sell gold and stuff for real money.
2 and 3 can happen very, very fast. We are talking hours - by time you discover your account has been cleared, they already have few very real bucks in pocket and someone who bought gold has likely spent it already.
Do they care about pixel stuff getting removed? Not with cash in their hands... They sure do not care what happens to stuff they liquidated (innocent bystander who bought it is hurt, who cares ...).
Now, their rmt customers getting hurt is cool, i am all for that, but that requires background investigation that is simply too expensive for anet to do.

Ncsoft are the thieves themselves after they banned my main accounts for no reason.
I gave my other accounts away that also had a gwamm on it.
These motherRED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOers are the worst i ever came across.
How can you ban someone for botting that did no use any bot and them simple
close the thread and put him on ignore all ncsoft staff shoot be shooted that is what they deserve.

What a totally unworkable sugggestion, aimed not at punishing the guilty, but at punnishing any innocent player downstream of sales. What for? Spite?
Fortunately, it's such a stupid idea, this one is just for forummers to laugh at :P

With all the signatures and un-signatures, this should be moved to Sardelac.
As for the topic itself, I think the concept is great, but the execution would be impossible.

The removal of items that have been pulled from hacked accounts can not be made into a black-and-white issue.
sykoone
So in other words, if you buy a couple of high end items from Random Joe in Kamadon, you'd have no problem with them being removed from your account with no compensation once it's found out they were stolen?
MithranArkanere
This could be used for very, very bad purposes.
You are pissed, so you want to leave the game forever and mess with people before that.
1. Sell very expensive items to as many people as possible.
2. Then, give away your earnings to a lot of different people, to tag as many people as possible.
2. Report account hacked.
3.You don't care about the items, since you are pissed off and leaving, but all the accounts you tagged get the items removed from them.
Reapeat for all of your accounts.
I don't think that would be very good.

No, what it will do is scare me shitless and keep my money out of the market for fear of buying an item legitimately that I have no awareness of being tied to a hacked account and losing it when the deletion sweeps through.

I don't care if I bought something worth 5k gold or 5k ectos, I don't want the risk of logging in to find my stuff missing because I was unable to figure out how the person I purchased it from acquired it and the people before them and the people before them...
It would make me and other traders paranoid and that's not good for any economy!

So, wait, since it takes "lots of work to trace everything", you want them to... trace everything and then delete stuff?
Oh well... ![]() |
The idea seems backed up by some logic, but it's flawed within. And if person A hacks into three accounts, gets items from there on his character X and then gets caught, his accounts gets perma-banned and items kept by character X are automatically 'deleted'. However, if they're traded away to random people in Kamadan, it would be very unfair to delete them manually at that point, especially that it would give nothing to the original victim, producing only more pissed off players.

I do believe Anet already achieves this goal - banned accounts still exist, but the items they possess are therefore impossible to get to.
Voodoo Rage
Worse idea ever. How would I ever know if I bought a stolen mini? I'm supposed to then get punished for it?

Also the Op's suggestion is quite laughable without a doubt.
