Help for New and Prospective PvPers - IRC and GvG Commentary
xhappy feetx
Finals up soon, tune in.
Kawil
Hey all, just wanted to give props to all that put this out. I watched 3 matches and while some of the lingo is over my head, I was able to get a general understanding of it. I'd love to get into some GvG with my necro. I was watching the builds and it'd be fun to see how it all works while I'm actually doing something. Thanks again to the commentators (I didn't mind all the talking over each other, lol), thought you all did a great job trying to cover different parts of the field. I'll definitely tune in again.

Really good stuff. I only had a chance to listen to the sup vs Jh match but I enjoyed it alot, definitely gave a deeper insight into the game. Big ups for all the shoutcasters.
Next month again would be great.

For sure man.
Tearz1993
is there a possibility of the other mAT matches being commentated on?
xhappy feetx
The ones we didn't cover? Idk I don't have anyone to cover them with me.
End
Just popping in to say good job and thanks.

Also, to those who couldn't make it, recordings will be uploaded around Tuesday.

I loved having a cast that didn't involve over enthusiastic Koreans and Star Craft II!

So, I have good news and bad news.
The good news is, I was able to get the videos done earlier than expected.
Like, now.
First Match, [OG] vs [Illl]
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WnwVPGqxQM
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5ss4EBj2bg
Second Match, [SSS] vs [Est]
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt6petDcKuM
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H7BG4mJRew
Finals, [jh] vs [Est]
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PQIb4t3U80
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQJC9ZV7pIs
The BAD news is that Fraps decided not to record a big bulk of the [sup] vs [jh] match. Like, 25 minutes of it. Could've been human error on my part, which I am not dismissing. I apologize for this and I will make sure it won't happen next time.
Enjoy!

If you're gonna do these more often it would be nice if you could post them all on the same youtube channel and put a link in a sticky on the pvp forum here or somewhere noticable.
EDIT:
If you still have the vent recording, you could upload that and people could watch the obs match from guild wars and start the ventrec. at about the same time.

Solid job controlling the obs mode camera to show as much as you could apok. I can offer a few suggestions that may make for a better visual presentation of obs mode in the future:
Strongly recommend selecting the game option "Always show nearby names in PvP", which makes the action much easier to follow rather than just seeing the basic character graphics (which sometimes can be non-obvious even whether they're on the blue or red team).
Also using the control key more often to highlight all players & NPCs on the map really lets you see everyone clearly in a teamfight, and usually is key for showing the big picture macro-level stuff. The alt key can also be useful to show flags or other items/objectives on the map.
Even mousing over another important player on the screen that isn't selected will highlight them, which you can use to spotlight an additional player for viewer focus without rapidly changing from one to the next every time. One good technique is to right click another key player on the screen and hold the rightclick down, taking control of the camera and keeping that other player highlighted while not having to change your selected player.
Finally nice job to everyone involved, seems like the most constructive thing I've seen in awhile.

There should be a stickied VOD thread imo.

Solid job guys. Your passion for the game is evident in your play-calling.
Maybe a little too much over-calling in the game, but not bad.
One issue I had, I think, was I there were times when you called folks by another name.
One thing I would like to see is in the countdown timer time, if you could discuss the plusses and minuses of each teams opposing builds, and what it takes to defeat each.
Really appreciated the when you guys pointed out really good play and really questionable play. As well as asking each other what the losing team needed to do to win the game.
Thanks!

I spoke to Angra last night, and we agreed to have a maximum of 3 commentators per match from here on out. 2, we felt, was too less, and obviously 4-5 was too much.
Glad everyone enjoyed our efforts! Tune in next month!

Great job, guys!

Do you folks plan on commentating other games as well or you gonna stick with MATs?

Fantastic job, PvP community.
I'm in the process of watching every single video, and I love the enthusiasm in the commentary.
This serves as a bright new chapter in PvP history!

So I think the commentators should just stick with the names that are on the teams when commentating, to help lessen the confusion.
I guess this is a good example of how tightly knit the more competitive PvP GvG of GW is, since we really all do go by one names for each other, even if the name is not included in the actual character name.
The bigger the PvP+GvG player base is, the harder it is for everyone to keep up with player names. Which is a good thing

For the youtube files character names don't matter as you cannot make them out.
For commentary it should be fine so long as the commentators remember to comment on handles vs avatar name.

I disagree entirely. I feel that it is more important to be able to recognize the players behind the avatar than just an avatar in a game. If players are swapping around simple commentary that XXX is playing as YYY should suffice.

If you want to go completely unbiased you might as well say "Player 4 on the Red Team/Guild Name".
Names are something more advanced in my opinion that shouldn't be a priority to new PvPers.
You have to remember your target audience. Of course I would prefer my name to be referred to as Moto/Motoko or "Pizza Pasta And Vodka" to be referred to as Psycool/Psy. Again, I am not your target audience. You are not the target audience as well.
We should all keep that in mind.
Meridon
Watching the commentary videos re-ignited my interest in GvG, and I'm sure has sparked the interest of many people unfamiliar with the format.
Don't forget that interest alone isn't enough. We need to get actually get those interested playing the game as well. Perhaps Guru could organize an open free-to-enter GvG session on Mumble for those who wish to learn from the experienced first-hand?

Watching the videos now, and man, this game is awesome. Those blocks are epic, lol

With the relaxed requirements, I'm sure if you hopped on IRC, many people would be up for playing, I'm not a big IRC guy but you can usually get me in game and sometimes I'll be on there.

Hello
Hates and I actually commentate on a lot of matches for fun. We have quite a few saved up, and will be commentating on most(if not all) of the remaining monthly matches. We just finished doing 2, info will be posted shortly. We have a bit of a different style - we focus more on the macro, the mindset of the teams, what people will try and accomplish, how they move around the map etc. - much less play by play. Would people be interested in having us upload/continue to commentate on some of these games?

I'm sure those willing to learn the ways of GvG will absorb anything here.

The target audience, as far as I see, are the people that are going to be watching several matches. The target is not the people that are going to be watching only one match.
Calling players by the current avatar name is good for people that are only going to be watching one match and then will never watch one again. If they are going to be watching more than one match it is far better for them to be able to recognize players across matches.

I think it's great that the community is that tight, I just wanted to point it out for future events.
Demigod-
I'd love to see them. Not sure how I'd feel about watching a match twice, however. I might like to see the play by play, then a 'macro' of the game, but I just don't know. I'm leaning toward seeing a different game, as 1 hour to see the same match might lose my attention.
Either way, I'm kind of a Obs-junkie, so I say the more the merrier.
Thanks guys.

But when people's focus is going into matches between completely different teams and just learning the basics of GvG and the builds involved. Names are an extra that aren't necessary to complete the picture for the audience.

Thanks to all involved, was pretty interesting. Would be cool to see Asp back commentating as he is obviously very good at explaining tactics at a high level while still being accessible to dunces such as myself.
Gruff
Good job on the commentary and making it available for people to enjoy on youtube, keep up the good work.

Also in regards to the OP, new players, please come on IRC. Haven't had much activity there from anyone new. We don't bite [hard]. Really we're more than willing to talk. If we talk enough we'd probably get talked into starting up some sort of group.

Thank you guys for the commentary. Not sure I'll be getting into pvp (no pvp char slot) but it was fun to listen to anyway!

To clarify, we will be doing mAT Coverage again this month, more details to follow.
