Do you get more attribute points for choosing a second profession? I was planning on building a Ritualist/Necromancer. If no points are given for the second profession is it better to build a Necro or Ritualist with no secondary profession?

You don't get any more att points for having a secondary profession. Whether you use it or not is really up to you and how you want to distribute your points and what skills you want to use.

If this is a PvE character you have no choice but to pick a 2nd profession. You don't have to use it, but it becomes required to advance. Later you can change to any secondary you unlock.

pve yes. it seems as splitting up points into two professions would weaken them.

That depends on the campaign. In NF and (Not 100% sure but I think) Factions you won't be able to get the quests to leave n00b island until you've completed the second profession quests.

In Prophecies the quest is entirely optional, one can leave pre without obtaining a secondary.

You do not have to put any attribute points into your secondary profession unless you wish to use skills that would require the points to be effective.

You cannot leave pre without accepting a secondary profession. If you do not complete that quest from Armin Saberlin, he will not give you the Path to Glory quest which leads you back to Sir Tydus and entrance to the Academy.

Thanks for the answers . I more question if i may. Are the guilds multi campain? I purchased the the trilogy and have all three. I played Diablo 2 for years and was in a great clan.(mostly older people like myself). any answers appreciated

Although you can not proceed to the mainland in nightfall without a second profession, you can get a ferry to cantha or tyria and play all the way through both of those campaigns as well as eotn without a secondary - although there is no point since, as everyone has pointed out, there is no requirement to actually put points into the secondary if you do not want to.

By the way, to the OP, just to make sure you are aware, you can add or subtract points from any attribute, primary or secondary anytime you are in an outpost. So, no, the secondary does not weaken you.

Yes. Once you join a guild all of your characters on the account, regardless of when you made them and where they start will be in the same guild. You cannot have two characters on one account be in different guilds. You can leave a guild at any time if you're unhappy with the one you joined.

Re secondary professions.

Yes putting too many points into a secondary class could weaken your character as you suggest.

However often you will have secondary class skill that needs no points or maybe just a few points and you can certainly spare that.

Some classes work very well indeed with just their own skills while others can get a great boost in power by picking other skills.

The campaigns, although they are stand-alone games, are all inter-related. Once you get to a major port town (L.A., Kamadan, K.C.), and do a small quest once, you can freely travel between them.

Therefore, Guilds are not restricted to just one campaign either. There are only "Guilds", not "Factions Guilds", "Nightfall Guilds", etc.

The entire 3 campaigns plus EotN are really just one big game.

Another point about 2nd professions. Depending on which chapter you start in, there are various skills given as quest rewards. If you somehow skipped getting your 2nd profession as has been mentioned, you would essentially be missing out on free skills. Even if you never use them on your character, they are being unlocked on your account for heroes and pvp.

There are a lot of options regarding secondary professions and their skills. Some people go X/Rt so they can bring flesh of my flesh as a res, or death pact, or some go Rt secondary to take spirits (sos farming)

I constantly use my secondary profession in conjunction with my Necromancer because Soul Reaping is, in my opinion, one of the best energy management sources in the game. So I can go N/E and go fire spamming all day and provided I kill things, I will get lots of energy, and thus be able to continue killing.

The secondary profession you select will not force you to use skills but you may elect to use certain skills that will enhance your characters damage capabilities, tanking or healing, and so on...

One thing to remember is each profession has a core attribute that only is alterable on that given main profession.

Necro - Soul Reaping
War - Strength
Mes - Fast Casting

Etc. Look on Wiki if this confuses you. It basically means you can't add attribute points to these attributes unless your main profession coincides with that attributes profession. Wordy eh? Wiki will make you win.

To build on that a little, the other advantage of a primary profession vs. secondary is that you can only use attribute runes for your main. So a necro/elementalist will never be as good at fire magic as a primary elementalist, whose fire attribute can be raised to 16 with a hat and superior rune.

Still, there are some combos that can rival. Warrior/dervish and assassin/dervish wielding scythes comes to mind.
