Need some advice about Guild Wars (& Hey)

First I'd like to say hello to all the members here - good to be here ('bout time as well considering I've had GW for years).

But I'm in a bit of a predicament; I'm at split minds on whether I should come back or not.

Let me give you a little summary of my Guild Wars journey (if you don't want to read through my unnecessary babble, just skip right to the end or just ignore the whole thing completely, lol):

- Made four level 20 characters and completed Prophecies with all of them

- Took too long to purchase Factions so by the time I did, people had already moved on to Nightfalls and there was hardly anyone left to complete the campaign with. My computer also broke down, smh

- GWEN came out but I was still trying to capture skills from both Prophecies and Factions, and actually complete the latter (although I made two level 20 characters in this campaign)

- I'm super behind now and a few weeks/months from playing games in general turned to years

So basically my question is, in 2010; is there any point of me buying Nightfalls and/or Eye of the North or shall I just wait for Guild Wars 2? (I mean, 250 years is a long time, heh)

What are some of the MMORPGs/MMOs people have moved on to fromg GW?


Take into consideration that I haven't even completed Factions with one character yet, gotten most of the special skills and armors, and missed a lot of special events.

Maybe it's really just the lore that I don't want to miss out on.

If you're thinking of playing again you might as well, especially if you still remember your logon details. It's not like you need to buy some play time or anything. Whether it's worthwhile is inevitably up to you. I think it is. There is still probably at least 6 months to GW2. This is heaps of time to finish the campaigns, provided you have an hour or two to play each day. Lots of stuff has been buffed so most of PvE is pretty trivial; you shouldn't really have major problems with completing the content, even with full AI teams. Heaps of people are coming back to fill their Hall of Monuments so there are more people around then there were a few months back. Joining a guild may help you get back into the game as well.

i moved to WoW (inb4 i get flamed for this) considering they have almost completely revamped the game and a new expansion is on it's way, i just got tired of the crappy useless updates anet keeps giving us and all the promises etc. just frustrates me so i said F it. if you want the extra weapon skins and what not in guild wars 2 i recommend getting some points in your hall of monuments but to play it in general i would say keep away. gw2 still has a while before it comes out

May as well get Nightfall and EOTN, since you can get stuff in GW2 from your Hall of Monuments, which you need EOTN to access. There's still a lot of new people coming into the game, and thanks to the HoM info, the game is a bit more active now than it was a couple months ago. Plus there's more story to play through, and there's new content being added (the War in Kryta which happened this spring/summer, as well as the new Canthan content which should happen soon) that will tie the events of GW1 into what's going to happen in GW2.

I've never been able to get into any other MMO, they range from boring (WoW and LOTR:O) to just plain unplayably bad (FFXIV) to me.

I remember when WoW and GW were like rivals at one point. As for Final Fantasy, ya, I think I'll just stick with the offline ones, lol. I used to think FF becoming online was the best thing for it.

I'll check out what's happening on GW then.

No reason to flame anyone if you want to rent a game that's up to you.
Inevitably if thousands of players are paying monthly to play the game they will have the finances to add content faster and more often than GW.
Quantity isn't always quality, I cannot judge since I have not nore ever will play wow.

Each to there own I say and I consider GW has more than given me my money's worth.
Still enjoy playing it and look forward to GW2

Suggest the OP checks out the GW2 page reading up on the HOM to see what he is likely to be able to build up in there over the next 6 months or however long we have to wait for GW2.

You should have quite a few birthday minis to collect and add to the hom if nothing else.

My advice would be to start playing for a bit and then decide on Nightfall and Eye of the North. You will be surprised that you're not coming back to a dead game community. My buddy turned me on to GW just over a year ago and I bought all the campaigns then. I've enjoyed playing alone and also with PUGs/Allies/Guildies as well.

I do play lots of games other than GW and with real life commitments, there are times I don't get from one mission to the next till weeks later. It is not that bad to just complete the 4 games and it isn't that hard either. If GW2 comes up before I am done with GW:EN, so be it. I am not going to worry too much about it.
Since you are already playing, I would say you should be able to finish the game before the end of 2010.

the game is still fun and the HoM stuff has got ppl doing all aspects of thegame again. If you decide to play DO get eotn, the skills are useful and the challenge is greater than nf. As ever a nice guild is the best way to play

@Verene, try minecraft, with your eye for design you will make some awesome stuff.

Thought I'd chime in on this one...

I'm utterly new to GW, started less than a month ago with Prophecies. I just ordered EotN off of Newegg tonight, and I'll snag Nightfall & Factions when I see a good price on them (likely on Steam).

In Prophecies, I just made it through Sanctum Cay tonight... I still have a wayyyyyysssss to go before I'll finish it up. But this is one of the things that attracted me to GW to begin with - I'm not playing "against" anyone else. It doesn't matter if every other person in-world has completed every single quest and mission, maxed their armor, gotten all the best weapons... it doesn't affect MY game play. I'm still merrily going along killing those stupid scarab thingys and getting ready to bring down the White Mantle scuzzballs (they make a very satisfying *THUNK*).

I think my timing in joining the GW universe is perfect. I have plenty of time before GW2 comes out to complete the original. I have plenty of time to work on earning some of those bonuses for GW2 through my GW game play. And I WON'T have time to get bored with the lore, or the universe, or the game in general!

So I think you should dive right back in... the water is lovely, and there's so much fun to be had. What others have done, how far they've gone, it's irrelevant... it only matters what you want to accomplish next!

^Well said. I did dive back in, the water was good, and finally completed Factions with ease. I think one of my main problems was creating too many characters.

I don't know why people hesitate. The games aren't half bad themselves. Much better then lets say Dungeon Siege 2 or something like that, even if you play by yourself. If you don't expect to compete or become worlds most renown fighter you'll have fun. You can wait for GW2, but you could also start playing the campaigns, get to know the world and have a good singleplayer RPG-experience out of it. And also, the whole package costs nothing.

Well, welcome back!! I'm pretty excited about checking out Factions & Nightfall, but I've still got soooooooo much to discover in Prophecies. Fortunately, I've learned to make liberal use of the Wiki and this forum... it's helped me find out all sorts of things that I really would not have just stumbled into otherwise.

Since you mentioned possibly getting EotN - I ordered it yesterday from NewEgg... $5.99 w/free shipping. If you haven't bought it yet, that's a really good price for it, and I've already received the notice that it has shipped, so they're fast, too! Amazon has it as well, for $8.80.

I really think GW is a high-value gaming experience... admittedly, I never played WoW - I strongly object to having to continue to pay to play software I've already bought. That irks me, and I'm going to have six kinds of fits if Blizzard does anything even remotely similar with DIII. But what it does mean, for me, is that GW has earned a loyal player in me... I will happily buy expansions or new chapters from them, gladly hand over my money for GW2, because the rich content and experiences I'm getting in return is definitely worth what I've paid, especially with sale prices.
