What's the point of Zaishen Menagerie
imnotyourmother
So what's the point of the Menagerie if it can not be used in GW 2?
I understand you can have any toon come here and get a pet that was put in it.. but.. with the end of GW2 is it not pointless

Two reasons to use it: to have animals available to yourself and your heroes, and for the fun of completing it.
If you don't care about it, you don't have to gather animals for it, there's no penalty for not using it.
GW1 will not be shutting down when GW2 is released. It'll still be there to play; it's not like this stuff is going to disappear. Not everything from GW1 has to carry over to GW2, and the Menagerie is one of those things that is just for GW1, to use or not use.
When you go back and play GW1, even after the release of GW2, your animals will be there for you.

Also: so PvP chars have access to other pets (different pets have different damage types and different evolutions have different stats).
Gennadios
Considering how much use pets have in PvE it might as well not exist, but it does add some sort of completionist drive to the game.
Also, it allows characters who hadn't completed the pre-requisites get some of the rarer pets, such as the Rainbow phoenix, the various wintersday pets, and the widow.

Amazingly, the whole point of GW1 is to play GW1, not GW2...
The Zaishen menagerie is essentially pet management made in-character.

A pet collection or zoo was an extremely popular request, so ANet added this feature. It also enables PvP characters to play with something other than Elder Wolves.

You play GW1 for GW1, not GW2. Yes, there is some that are playing just to fill their HoM, but not everything in the game should reward you in GW2.
The menagerie for example, can be easily filled by buying it in the ingame store. No sense in rewarding you in GW2 because you spent a few bucks to get all the pets. It is just a nice place to hold all your pets and have easy access to them.
Riot Narita
Pet unlock pack doesn't fill your menagerie (it doesn't give you the "prestige" pets eg. Black Widow)
ogre_jd
Specifically, the unlock pack doesn't give you:
Black Moa
Black Widow
Jingle Bear
Moss Spider
Phoenix
Rainbow Phoenix
White Jingle Moa
Jingle Moa
Black Moa
Black Widow
Jingle Bear
Moss Spider
Phoenix
Rainbow Phoenix
White Jingle Moa

Seriously? 99.9% of this game is pointless then since it does nothing for GW2. Sure, you have to do much of it to fill the HOM but that won't matter in GW2 anyway because all you'll get are armor/weapon SKINS (nothing more powerful than what you'll have access to, and the new stuff will probably look better) and titles that say you were pretty good in some aspects of a different semi-related game.

Gotta catch em all!

Guild Wars was not designed to be a stepping stone to GW2. It is a great game that ArenaNet has changed over the years in response to both need and community requests. Even if you don't use the Menagerie, it remains a great addition to the game that fulfilled a widely-requested wish.

It's a lot easier to have pets in the Menagerie when you need them than to have to have them on your character or a hero if you want to keep them.
It's for GW1 convenience, as people have said, not GW2 carryover.
