I am playing through Prophecies for the first time, but also own Nightfall. I'm finding the difficulty of henching missions is going way up as I get deeper in the Prophecies campaign, so I thought about hopping over to Elona to pick up a few heroes (and some additional skills wouldn't hurt). I completed the Sunspears in Kryta quest, but haven't travelled yet, because the dialogue from Kormir made me think that doing so could end progress in the Prophecies campaign. She says, "Finish your important tasks here in Tyria, and return to me when you are ready."
Long build up for a quick question; will I be able to return to Tyria when I want to continue the Prophecies campaign (from where I currently am in the story)? Or will that return only be possible after reaching a certain (distant) point in the Nightfall campaign?

Don't worry, you can return any time you want. You can always freely map-travel to any town you've been to before. Just click on the ship on the map.
Pre-searing is the only exception to this.

Heh. I recently added NF to my Prophecies/North alt account and ran into that same dialogue for the first time in forever. I remember thinking, "Man, that warning must freak out the newbies."
The beautiful thing about Guild Wars, as opposed to a lot of other MMORPGs, is that very very little is irreversible. You can't really make a mistake that has you forever kicking yourself for screwing up or having to pay a steep penalty in time/gold to correct.

That reminder has mostly to do with Ascension and getting your last 30 attribute points. Many people who start a character in Prophecies and then campaign hop or get runs find themselves short on their attribute point total because they ascended in a different campaign and forgot about going back to Prophecies to do those two quests.

Short answer is yes - you can hop between any campaign you own at any time and pick up where you left off in each. Most players do grab heroes as early as possible to aid in the latter quests and missions.
One thing you may want to consider is the extra 50,000 XP bonus you get for completing Augury Rock if you do not complete the Hunted! quest in Nightfall. I've always taken Factions and Nightfall characters through the story up to their respective ascension missions, then went to Prophecies and completed the desert to get the extra boost. Helps with Survivor if you are doing it "normally."
