Most played class?
Pluberus
What is the current most played class in GW? Warrior?
DigitalFear
Warrior, Monk. Possibly ele.
MagnumShadow
Assassin,they are everywhere.
Lord Dagon
w/e the current meta is in SCing(most noteably DoASC)
so sin, paragon(for imba, not used really outside DoASC), monk, and atm mesmer.
personally i play an ele. preety awsome class(and they are good for emo bonding UWSC if u know how)

sos rit....good for soloing
DeanBB
I play them all but Ritualist gets the most play time nowadays.
Steps_Descending
I'd be tempted to go for rit too. Maybe with monk second. THen again, that is from pure guts and PuG experience, but you'll alway want 2 monks (or monk/RIT) and I generally feel like there is more often 2 rits than other proffs. But then again, I do play rits and most other classes don't interfere as much as rits, so rits have to check builds more often.
KPEATOP
Ritualist - solo farming
Assassin - SC, farming
Monk - heal is always needed
Warrior and necromancer are the best and fastest way to self explore the PvE. People create one of those character to get the first impressions about the game.

I Hate Chips
Assasins dominate pve, with their mindless SC'ing

Here's the question to ask. If you were to start a new character today, assuming you have only one character and it's your least fav profession, what would it be?
That's the most popular profession.
I started a ranger and played him loyally for 9 months, in late '06. Then I switched to Paragon (just in time to miss the Ursan days. darnit!) and played that until 3 months ago. I briefly tried a warrior again. Liked it better than the first time I tried it, but still hated it. I went rit at the beginning of December and haven't looked back. In less than 4 attempts I farmed more ectos than I have since Dec. 2006.
I like paragons, but their roles and builds are very limited, and they have many drawbacks.

actually I found a paragon is great for PvE exploration, being able to keep heroes/henchies alive better than most professions.

Poor micro made me pick those to characters.
The necro MM + minions is an avalanche that can`t be stopped or blocked. With more micro you can use another necro build that kills enemy parties without troubles - SS nuker. Both builds are 2/3 skill-spamming and even a starter can handle it.
The warrior isn`t the ULTIMATE class but i think that a good aggro is 70% of the win.

Easily Assassin without competition.
LifeInfusion
Assassin and ritualist.
RedDog91
Assassin.
I'd like to say ritualist because of everyone jumping on the SoS bandwagon, but for every rit you see, there's 2 assassins next to him....and 5 behind him.

Voodoo Rage
I would put my money on Warrior just because it's sort of the "go to" profession for a new player not familiar with the game and most people tend to show some loyalty toward the profession they first started with.
tcratty
i would say assasin number one and ritualist a close second
Lanier
Sure assassins are common but SoS rits are EVERYWHERE. Its like they breed twice as fast as any other profession. While I see assassins fairly common, I definitely see rits more often. That is why I no longer play my rit much anymore.

Ritualists.
Probably because SoS Rit is the easiest and most mindless thing to play, which makes it very common.
You can literally place your spirits in front of a mob, and spend .5-2 mins off surfing the web while they and your AI do all the work.
I do see quite a few sins, but only usually in places where they're PUG'ing for SC's (tons of them, though).
Warriors have FoWSC but nothing else really, so I only see them on occasion.
Monks are 50/50 with being common, as sometimes, it can be IMPOSSIBLE to find one when you need it ;D

Rites
if you want a GOOD gaming experience, i say go ranger... it seems to be the most underpowered class but yet once you learn how to play the game and build your heroes, they rock

I'd say for PvE: it's a close call between Rits and Sins.
In PvP (low level PvP at least): Mesmers.
Rushin Roulette
From running missions im seeing moslty Necros and Rits nowadays. Assassins are relatively rarely played outside of SC and farming from what I noticed.
Id list them in regular gameplay (no farming and no SC) like this;
1. Necro
2. Rit
3. Monk
4. Warrrior
5. Ele
6. Ranger
7. Assassin
8. Mesmer
9-10. Dervish / Paragon (as I never really see them in PvE play much at all. This might cange after the Derv Update goes live in 2095 though)

I had the idea that the most played class would be somewhat mirrored by fan forum activity, so I counted the threads and posts of my most favorite forums: www.wartower.de (German) and www.guildwarsguru.com (US). I sorted the tables by the last column "Percent threads per day", as this seems to me the most significant indicator of the interest in a class. According to this, the warrior is probably the most played class, followed by the monk (german community) or the assassin (US community).
Also included in the picture is a Wartower poll that started December 2006 and whose last entry was September 2009. It was made in the hype of the 600hp monk duo farming, so today the monk is probably not as popular any more as in this poll.
Please note that I normalized the "... per day" fields by the number of days the classes are available, so we can compare the activity for the old classes like the warrior to the newer classes like the dervish.
There are interesting differences between the german and the US communities. I don't know if this is a difference between the ingame player communities or between the forum communities. Perhaps a difference between forum moderation styles. Or it is really a difference in the behaviour of the players.
I suspect a difference between the player communities, since I never saw that much assassins or dervishs in german PUGs than the US forum activity suggests. I never see such a high rate of melee classes in german PUGs - these consist of more ranged classes.
On the other hand, there are almost always the monks missing most in PUGs. According to the german forum activity, there should not be any absence of monks, but in fact there are definitely too less monks even in german PUGs. I assume the numbers are still remains of the 600hp monk duo hype.
The attached .zip file contains the original excel sheet.
edit: You might see a correlation of the most popular classes in GW1 from my analysis to the first 4 announced classes for GW2. At least for the Wartower community.

I personally don't think forum statistics can really give a good indication for most played profession, because it it usually not recent. In example, I believe my Guru profile has listed my Warrior as my character for a fair bunch of years, while I played most on my Elementalist.
Missing HB
Exactly. Considering everyone now has many class , it's hard to just say that way what is most played. In Game , it's obvious : there are probably as many warriors as sins :
- warrior because it's usually the first character people create
- sin , because people want their ectos.
It would be interesting to know which one is the least played though. It's probably either dervish , either paragon ( orly..) , but it's understandable since they never got any efficient use or any update...

and a HUGE update to rits, mesmers etc since 09.....and once you have made an sos right, what exactly else do you need to talk about it? (use these skills-->kill)...not much need to elaborate unlike say, warrior, who has not only been around longer, was used in the holy trinity for a good long time and has a choice of weapons and such----much more to discuss on that front.... so yeah there will be more discussion about them.
would be interested in seeing the change in the discussions since 09----

The most played class is by far assassin. Rollfaceway (wota/esurge etc) in HA, standard shadow walk crap in gvg, perma shadow... I think most GWAMMs I see are sin also.
The best class will always be warrior :P
