Hey everyone, I've been a very active GW player since (I think) september or august '06. So I've seen quite a couple of changes occur, but there is this thing I've heard talking about a couple of times, but no idea what it is, I can think of something, but I'd like to have some more background^^

What is, and what caused the Monk strike exactly?

It was a bunch of monks who refused to join groups doing Thunderhead Keep mission.

The mission was almost impossible at the time if you were only using henchmen. Remember that GW was in its first year and the knowledge base was very slim. Most groups failed to even reach King Jalis at the keep because they tried to rush through the early parts of the mission and kept dying.

You can search by putting "monk strike" (like that in quotes) into the search box and make it for posts instead of threads. The subject gets mentioned in every nostalgia thread.

The Monks were tired of getting the blame for party wipes, especially when it wasn't their fault - not only there, but everywhere in the game. It was staged at THK outpost, and got the attention of several A-Net employees.

Yeah I remember getting stuck at Thunderhead Keep as well . There were much less skills available back then, and the best elites needed to be capped on the Fire Islands (for which you needed to complete Thunderhead Keep). Monks were in super-high demand for the challenging Thunderhead Keep mission, they could completely dictate their demands to a party and ragequit if the party didn't comply.

Anyway, here's a link.

Thanks guys^^ Already figured something like that, but didn't know it was related to THK. I do remember it being a tough mission, but I didn't get there till WAY after that happened :P

It was really funny because at that time it was common in more difficult areas to try for two monks in the party.

There were all these parties formed up ready to go and the Monks were sitting around enjoying the fun as parties got ever more desperate.

Of course this was pre heroes and you couldn't blame the Monks because a good monk is worth there weight in platinum, but even a good monk cannot help a stupid party.

Whats funny about this is that monks got their jobs replaced by hero AI and the fact that the siege part of THK is so easy and boring that I AFK it for 15 mins and come back later and kill Dagnar.

Nostalgia.

I still do it. I managed to spend 2 and a half hours in SoO HM after I had just done it with another (decent) PUG in about 50 min and another one in about 1 hour 15 min. The ele had Double Dragon, wtf?

i so often see this happening when i monk, it doesn't seem like players are getting respect for playing a support role rather than offensive role. Monking takes alot of mental energy (keep an eye for team's health, watch aggro, being very reflex and responsive to spikes), and people just don't see that.. For the time being, i'm going to play some other professions ~_~.

I was one of the lucky few that passed that mission with a good team by the time the strike came around. It was difficult at the time considering hench healer being less effective and monk healers being so few. In fact, the game had players go for defensive tactics more than super offensive ones. That's when the wammo was super popular.
