For a new player, I'd suggest an Elementalist or Warrior. But it depends on your play style which profession you'll enjoy more. The good thing is, you've got at least 4 character slots to test different professions out with.
I'd stay away from Mesmer at first, since much of a Mesmer's success depends on knowing your enemy and what to expect. They're a challenge to master.

The closest thing is daggers which Assassins wield.
Warriors can use 2handed weapons, they are called Hammers.
Ranger is my personal favorite profession. Their Expertise attribute makes them one of the most versatile classes, as they can pretty easily use any weapon from any profession and have their skill energy requirements reduced (at 12 expertise, energy use is halved). They aren't the best for damage output, but they have a good survivability rate due to their inherent +30 armor against all elemental damage (which is your biggest damage threat) and their multiple defensive skills.

hmm, would actually be easier if we knew exactly which campaign you had
for Prophecies - Warrior, axe warrior to be exact, or ranger (which is my fave as well)
for Factions - you want dual wield, then go assassin
for Nightfalls - warrior, ranger, or even paragon (spear and shield)

i have the guild wars trilogy disc, so i got all 3 chapters i believe

if u have all 3, that means you will have 8 slots to begin with. Try them all, in all three games and see which professions you like best. That is the best way to go. I believe the professions tie to our gaming character so only way to find out is try them all.

Good advice
There isn't any best character its all down to what appeals to you which comes first by deciding weather you want to stand toe to toe with the enemy or fight at range.
try a few classes out and see what works for you its better to give an evenings play over to doing this than find out in 3 months that you should have played something else.
You do get a secondary profession which can be changed later on its only your main class that is fixed for life.

I would try a few but I would suggest you and your friend start with different profs. ranger and necro would be my choice.

I can't say that there is, of course, any "best" combo/duo. It would be best to not be too similar like two Warriors or two healing Monks.
But almost any other combo would be fine because you can fill any needed roles in the party with Henchmen. So basically, chose what ever floats your boat.
A Necro and a Monk would be good though. The Necro can be a Minion Master, or an Curses damage dealer, or other builds and the Monk can be a Smiting damage dealer or a healer, etc., as desired.
If you have Factions however, in spite of what I just said, dual Ritualists can be tons of fun.

lenhart best bet is to try a few professions, from other rpg's I expected to like warrior types but in Gw's I much prefer casters. Welcome to the game and Guru

Also keep in mind that your set up is not permanent. If you start a warrior and try out a hammer build, you can change your attributes around in any outpost and switch to an axe and shield or sword and shield. It's very easy to change the whole focus of your character.
