Some news about Embark Beach
dancing gnome
The posts in this thread are exactly why I didn't post this in the Live Team news thread - this is not news. There was nothing of substance in that post by John, or any of his posts recently. It doesn't let anyone know anything other than he's excited about things.
Now it says February is going to be an exciting month so if you want to read into that expect the dervish update this month, but considering the guardian was supposed to come out in "January" and they left it to the end of January (ANet does that with all their "month" deadlines) don't hold your breath for an early February dervish update, there's probably a generic bug update or a couple new quests for CNY that swept it under the rug again. I would love to be wrong.
To clarify: I have no problem with John writing about how he's excited about stuff, it's his wiki page and he can communicate with the players how he wants to, if he's excited and people want to read his page I'm all for it. I'm just disappointed someone made a thread with a title as misleading as that.

Am I the only one totally apathetic about the dervish update?

I think when they did the Mesmer update last year, they did a good job with it. I have a feeling they will be giving the Dervish it's proper time to shine seeing as it isn't going to be in GW2. Well, at least the first iteration of GW2.

Am hoping a lot of dervish like abilities make it into GW2.
The Guardian is part paragon and the Ranger is Part Assassin or at least have abilities similar to them.
Just hoping for more positive announcements they should just be honest if there is a problem with the Derv update.
I think we would respect that.

Watching the GW2 videos on the GW2 website, it looks like the golems are still dervish... there's a scene where one of them is doing what looks like some sort of "whirling dervish" attack. Spinning around and driving the foe back. It's pretty darn cool looking.

What? Treat us like children because we can't handle being informed? Well, perhaps that's true for some of us, but not all. I'm a pretty patient person and I like being treated like a mature adult. I appreciate the updates, as opposed to many months of silence before something pops out of mid-air.
So many corporations operate behind that veil of silence; it's so sterile. While it can be frustrating to wait and wait and wait on projects that seem to take forever, I choose to appreciate that A-Net is still excited about adding stuff to our "dying game," to the point of maybe even biting off more than it can chew. While I'm not one of those who believes "any new content is good content" -- they are a business and it's definitely in their interest to keep the consumer happy -- I've also spent some time developing online content for a greedy public. It's pretty damn impossible to keep the greedy public happy. I'm looking forward to the Dervish update, too. But I don't think that talk about/work on Embark Beach is mutually exclusive. |
...if the live team kept any promises. But they don't. They don't even keep the AMMENDMENTS to their promises. I'm going to be brutally honest, when the dervish update hits, I'm probably not going to care that much, because it has been promised for SO LONG. It will be nice, but it won't nearly be as good as it would have been had it have been on time. When it finally comes, I will probably sit there feeling like I was owed this update rather then granted it.
I love that the team is open about what they are doing. I love that they still care so much about this game, but their utter lack of sticking to the schedule they announce to the world distorts this and turns it into something I am unable to appreciate nor care about. It doesn't matter that technically, we deserve none of this.
8 months for one skill update. When you say you are going to do something by x month, and don't deliver, it makes you look bad. When you don't deliver in over half a YEAR, it honestly makes you like you're not doing anything and don't frakkin care.
And we know you care, Anet, we really do. You've just made us jaded, and you can't really blame us for that.

I understand events are seasonal and thus you have a limited window of opportunity to create content for them but when you have an update which runs through almost a year it's going to be delayed for every single seasonal event in that period (Halloween delay, Wintersday delay, would have been a Dragon Festival delay had there been new content for that and now we are looking at a possible delay due to possible Canthan New Year content). On top of that we had WiK and HotN delaying it as well. There is always going to be something to do so at some point they need to make the skill balance updates a priority that doesn't keep getting put on hold, that's what people who cared most about this update are pissed off with. I know it's redundant at this point but at the very least it would be nice to have Regina come out and say that the originally promised bi-monthly skill balances are not going to take place (and never did). We can't really call them out on not meeting a dead line for the dervish update because they never set one, we can call them out on delaying it for 8+ months because that's how long ago they said it was coming.
The people who were originally excited about the dervish update were forced into accepting the reality that their class is the same as it always was for the last 8 months, that's too long to be truly excited about something you care about when you are trying to play the game during that period. I expect the dervish update will revitalise the number of players playing the dervish but it's going to please a lot of new dervish players like the rit buffs did (something old school rit players didn't love even though they liked the changes) rather than please the dervish crowd. My personal belief on whether or not they will make the current dervs of GW happy is that ship has sailed.
Lets just hope they come out with a statement that there will be no more class balances to come after the derv one considering how painful that will be for the community of players who play that class while they wait for it to be fixed.

most of you are presuming an awful lot.
you pry and beg for any titbit of info then twist it around and use it against them.

My guess is that the golem was an asuran "warrior" suit doing the whirling axe move.

I hate to say this but I think Embark Beach and 7 heroes will be the end of the game as a multiplayer experience. Once you just have to go to one location to reach any mission, and bring 7 heroes along...well it's going to be for title grinders and helping people get to HoM=30pts.

I've traded with people probably about 3 times max in my 5 years.
Gamers Q_Q too much, no thanks.

Pull the "it's free" line out when people complain about content updates, but skill balances to fix imbalances that exist (and shouldn't exist on a product which has shipped and people who have paid for) resulting in the gameplay experience on that class being a lower quality one. The simple fact that they did serious reworks on two of the classes (ritualist and mesmer) which impacted on and hit at core fundamental gameplay of those professions and are doing it to a third now (dervish) is evidence enough to support the reality that Guild Wars was never properly balanced for PvE across all professions. These classes weren't unplayable in a literal sense but in a practical sense outside of a couple niche builds they needed some serious reworking.

Looks at topic title......
It's about content and not dervish updates, I know some people are hijacking the topic but..
btw balance in pve?

You may be right... I saw it in the video and immediately thought, "ooooooo whirling dervish...shiny!!!" and remembered that when I saw the post. LOL

They also said they would be more open (thinking Lindsey here) and she all but shut-down when the stress became too much.
These may not be promises, but they were their intentions.

My point is it would be different if they didn't speak up until they knew for sure that they can do what they say they will do (like what the rest of Anet seems to be doing with GW2, for instance). When you say you're going to get something by x month, and 8 months later you're still working on it, You just cannot expect people to smile and say "I'm so glad they're doing this". If they weren't going to get it done in time, they should not have announced it until they knew they could get it done.

[EDIT] Tip: Check the history.

Don't you people know that ALL updates take time?
Rumor has it that ANet started working on the very first Guild Wars 2 update back in 2000. Supposely it is to be released sometime within the first month of the game being released. Of course, no news has been released because they aren't ready to discuss it.

KJ: I don't see it. I see a bunch of stuff that we haven't gotten, yet, but I see no promised projects that they've since said they weren't doing. The WiK took a loooong time to get out too, long enough that people started saying the same damn stuff they're saying about the dervish update, but we got it.

Not to stir the pot, and I may be wrong, but I thought they said they would reduce the skill updates to every 2 months. |

sometimes, i just wish anet would just surprise us and fix everything they f*cked up over the past year or two. this game used to be so much fun. i really, really, really hope whatever new content they do decide to add won't be bits and pieces of parts of the game we've already done the same thing in in order to promote costumes.
if they need the money, why not just make it a nice, balanced game again? state of the game right now, all my friends that show interest in the game i just tell them don't waste their time.

Oh yeah, they did...but I lump that in to them not being able to keep a schedule. My point was that saying "the live team never keeps any promises" is asinine. They keep their promises, except for the ones about when stuff will be done. |
I find it hypocritical of the top management to talk about 'community building' while they have all but given up on the one they already built. But that's just my opinion. I think they've done a shoddy job of late buiding the community, at least the one that's still playing.
I like John and all. I like the fact that he knows what he wants and isn't afraid to put that down in writing. What I dislike, to be clear, is the lack of resources that are made available to this game. And, yes, I know it's done in the name of GW2, but I would personally like to see more resourses at the expense of GW2.

I will be happy when they get us the new things they have said were coming. Then again, I am happy now with all the stuff that I already have. For me it is a win/win situation. For many people no matter what ArenaNet does it seems like a Whine/Whine situation.
