Despite all the information on the Wiki, what it does NOT tell you is "when" you start earning faction from these two tracks. Yesterday I noticed on my "H" panel that suddenly I have Luxon and Kurzick listed beneath Balthazar. I have no idea what triggered those two showing up, especially since I probably look at that screen 10+ times a day and it definitely was NOT there the day before, AND I haven't done anything to move myself forward in Factions since Tuesday.
So first question... what is the trigger that activates those two to appear in your "H" panel? I do not have any points in either, incidentally.
Second question... at what point in my progress through the Factions storyline will I actually begin earning faction? Like... which mission or quest offers the first reward of faction?
Third question... I know there is a Luxon/Kurzick PvE-only spell I'd very much like to acquire - is there anything I can be doing now to begin earning faction "early"? The reason this is important: with Factions, I am trying to ONLY progress when my husband and best friend do. We play together on Tuesdays and move forward one mission at a time each week. I'm so far ahead of them in the other campaigns that I'd really like to remain at the same pace as them in this one. But obviously, I'd love to be able to acquire the skill I want as soon as I reach the outpost where it can be obtained - so I'm looking for ways that I can begin banking faction ASAP. I was considering filling Young Heroes of Tyria books (obviously excluding the two from Factions since I don't have HM there)... but are there other things I could be doing as well?
Fourth and last question... is K/L faction account-wide? Like, if I had a second toon going through Factions and earning faction, would whatever faction I earned with that toon combine with what I'll earn on my existing toon?
Thanks for your help... if anyone has links to more detailed information about K/L faction in addition to what's on the Wiki, I'd really like to have them. It seems like the Wiki pages about this subject presume you already have some knowledge of how the whole thing works, and I'm completely clueless.

As far as I know, I think you should always have them in your hero window.. I think they were always there after factions release.. If not, my guess would be, when you take the quest "The count's daughter" or something..
First mission in Factions to give factions is Arborstone, which gives kurzick faction.
Yes, faction is account wide, you can earn faction on any charr you want and it will for your account.
Something you should know, if you have like 15k kurzick and 10k luxon or something, and you spend faction of one of both, for example, buying amber chunks, you will lose that amount of luxon faction, because you spent the kurzick.
Best way of earning it is doing VQ's in Echovald Forest as fast as possible (yields 18-25k per VQ, depending on zone)
If you want Faction NOW, you should do kurzick or luxon AB or JQ or FA..

You can start getting kurzick/luxon faction already, by Jade Quarry, Fort Aspenwood, or Alliance battles (all PVP). Once you earn the first rank in either of them you can start turning in faction for the skills and the higher your rank the better the skill will be. There are side quests throughout the lower half of factions that will have kurzick or luxon faction as reward. if you have a slot open create a PvP character and depending on what your guild is affiliated with do the JQ or FA for that side so you can get faction. While you are doing the missions speak to the Luxon Bard or Kurzick poet in Kaineng Center to get a Shiro's Return book, each Normal Mode book yields 40k faction and 4k in gold. Hard Mode books yield 120k faction and 6k gold. You can retro add any mission done within the last 30 days to that book for 100g per page.
As far as when you got those two on your H panel....I have no idea. Sorry.

I can't do VQ'ing until I've finished Factions, so that's off the table for a bit, but I'll definitely keep that in mind as a way to accrue additional faction later. Thanks for all the suggestions!!

affiliated in gw terms is who you are aligned to - kurzic or luxon.
New alliances may only be formed by a guild leader who has access to the Guild Wars Factions campaign and has pledged his allegiance to either the Luxon or the Kurzick factions. To form an alliance under one of these two factions, the guild leader must travel to the corresponding main city of either faction, (House zu Heltzer for Kurzick, Cavalon for Luxon.) A fee of 500 Gold has to be paid to the representing ambassador. Alliances can only be formed as Luxon or Kurzick alliances.
You need to be either luxon or kurz to join another "guilds alliance"

Once you progress a bit further south you should start to see Lux/Kurz priests at the res shrines in explorable areas. Talk to them to gain a blessing for 100g and you will also earn faction points for each kill and bonus for each boss kill.
You should also know that you can't talk to a Lux/Kurz NPC in a town or explorable if you have more faction for the other side. So if you have 2000 Luxon and 1000 Kurzic the Kurzic priest/merchants and such will not allow you to use their services. Once you spend the 2000 Luxon, you will lose all 1000 Kurzic, and start to earn some Kurz you will be able to speak with them again.
So remember to only earn faction for one side at a time and spend what you have before earning for the other side.

Note too, that you can have both K & L "unspent" faction at the same time and you can do both sides (K & L) regardless of what your Guild's allegiance is. And, when you spend one type of faction, you will lose an equal amount of the other - so it's not a good idea to let them accumulate beyond the 10k you need at one point.
