Hey guys! I haven't played GW in AGES (and buy ages I mean 2009). I was wondering if there was a GW client for the MacBook Pro since I no longer have my PC.

No, but I've heard you can run it under WINE or bootcamp if you have enough horsepower.

Stop feeling sorry and just use Boot Camp.

I've always heard that you need an external program like Boot Camp to play it on a Mac, however, my brother's friend plays on his Mac without any special software needed to make it compatible. He lives right down the street from us, so I've checked it out, there are absolutely no programs running to make GW playable on his Mac. It just works.

Yes there is. It's the same one everyone else uses, just install Windows using bootcamp first.
Or, you could use one of the less-than-optimal methods like Crossover or Whine - which can give playable fps depending upon model, settings, etc.

But, if you are really asking if there's a GW for OSX, the answer is no.

It can't possibly 'just work' because .exe programs cannot 'just work' on Macs without a 3rd party program.

I have been using my iMac and MacBookPro since I started playing and this is the program I use for it.

Trial will give you like a week but you pay for it after that so it depends on how much you play Guild Wars to justify buying it but at least for 7 days you get to play.

I would love to argue on this, but I myself have no clue how it just works on his Mac.

What I do know:
  • he has/had no experience using a Mac before
  • no one in his family has experience with a Mac
  • he installed the game and it worked
  • I have heard that it can't be done without 3rd programs, so I went over personally to see how he was doing it and found no software running in the background to make it work

The best way to play GW on a Mac (or any game for that matter) is to partition your drive and install Linux on the partition.

Then install Wine and run it through that.

It sucks, but that's your best option since Apple is stupid.

That is not Possible, and I am Speaking from experience, What he may be doing is running crossover, @ which point the game would seem to "just work" on mac.

Another possibility is that he is running Parallels V6, which allows you to run windows in Coherence(sp) mode, which would be difficult to spot to the untrained eye.

But to respond to the TC, From experience for the best Possible mac gaming, I would use Bootcamp, Ive tried them all, Wine, Crossover, Parallel, and Bootcamp. And IMHO Bootcamp runs it flawlessly, only trouble with bootcamp is the complex setup if you are unexperienced with computers, and mac software

Ah okay, so after I install BootCamp I can play GW? Some people are saying that I have to install Windows, but where do I find a Windows downloader? I have a Windows PC at home... but I'm guessing I can't... transfer it or anything? I'm really bad with computers. :[

EDIT: Also, how much do I have to partition to play GW properly?

Afaik BootCamp comes already installed on the Macbook Pro. What you do need though is a license (and software) for Windows so you can install it, this you would have to buy.

Alternatively you can try one of the 'emulation' style programs mentioned.

I don't know how BootCamp works but if you need to make a partition then I would do 20GB minimum. I think Windows requires about 8GB and the GW.dat is currently around 4GB.

Ugh but I don't really want to buy a new Windows software because I already have a Windows PC, but I only want it on my Macbook because I take it to school with me (and I want to play at school :P). If I download the emulators would that require me to buy a Windows? Or would that be unsafe?

Well unless you have a Retail copy of Windows and plan to uninstall it from your other computer then you can't do it without buying a new copy.

If you use the OSX software then you don't have to buy Windows. As mentioned in this thread there are several ways to get non-Mac games running in OSX. Try searching on Google for some of the names mentioned in this thread (Crossover, Whine, csgames, playonmac.com)

Also before asking lots of questions that have probably already been asked try searching in the Tech area of the forums, for example these threads may be useful:

Frankly, I'm quite curious as to why you would love to argue over something which you claim to have no knowledge about. Anyway...

What I do know:
  • I have over 15 years of experience with Macs
  • Everyone in my family has experience with Macs (not that it matters)
  • I couldn't even install the game
  • I have heard someone claiming that it can be done without 3rd party programs, so I booted up into OS X to prove him wrong

Upon downloading, OS X doesn't even recognize the .exe file extension. I save the file and run it manually, it opens up in TextEdit.

No mysteries at all. The only my mystery is your friend; how he managed to get GW running without realizing he has a 3rd party software on it.

FWIW, I run GW on Linux and it runs via Wine without any problem. If there's a Wine package for the Mac (and there should be) you can try that. Just make sure you get a recent package.

Although already mentioned, I would suggest crossover games. I have only been playing GW for a very short time, but this works absolutely fine on my Macbook pro and you get 7 days free trial anyway to test it. Very easy and once installed it just recognises that the standard GW client is the file you want to convert so even easier!
