Confirm to close client
Ailina
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but a few searches (and checking the index) did not turn up anything, so I hope this is ok.
I know a lot of people have been frustrated by accidentally closing out of the menu by clicking on the generic "close window" button at the top of the client (next to minimize and maximize/window). For example, I was halfway through a difficult vanq with a guildie when I went to flag heroes (my compass is in the upper right hand corner) and my mouse slipped and I hit the x by accident. Guild Wars instantly closed, and I lost all progress in that vanq.
Would it be possible to have a pop-up window that appears when you hit the x button that would ask if you're sure you wish to close Guild Wars? I know many people that things like this have happened to, and it's really really frustrating.
I know on browsers like firefox there is a warning that appears when you try to close a window with multiple tabs that asks you if you're sure you want to close them. If you didn't mean to close out, then you hit cancel/no, and you don't lose what you were doing.
I really see no reason not to have a confirm close window. Would it be technically feasible? Would it require a lot of work? (I can't imagine that it would).
I'd think this is a small thing that would help a lot of people out.

Something so simple can help a ton.
I've accidently closed myself out of many important things, including a SoO run where a q9 BDS dropped for me and i scrolled up to pick it up and clicked the X by mistake!

Why is your minimap in the upper right?
Move it to the lower right. Problem solved.

Kirzath: That is entirely not the point. That was just an example of how it happened to me, the most recent time. As you can see from Thrilla Killa's experience, it can happen for many different reasons. I've had this happen before many times, like when I'm switching between windows and accidentally hit the button when trying to click the window behind it. The point is that it can happen accidentally in many ways, and it would be great to have a way to avoid that.

Yea I agree, something I try to multi task while in an explorable area, opening my inventory and moving stuff and I have a bad habit of moving the window to the upper right hand corner where everything is.
/signed, if not for GW, then definitely GW2.

I completely agree with this idea. Been a few times that I have accidentally closed Guild Wars by mistakenly double-click slipping on closing a browser or something while I am Windowed.....its rather annoying that it just shuts down without asking if its okay.

Many times I have closed GW instead of inventory, or whatever else I was trying to close.

This seems to be pretty overwhelmingly agreed upon. My question is, since the Anet people don't necessarily read these forums, what would be the best way of getting such an idea across to the people who could actually decide whether or not to implement it? Do Anet employees actually lurk on this forum and check out all the ideas suggested here? (I highly doubt it).
Spiritz
Id hate to say it but ... its too far into gw for anet to do anything and like many great suggestions all they will remain is great suggestions.
I like the idea myself - just one question , when you accidentaly closed gw did you try and restart it asap as most of the time when ive done a fast quit ive managed to reconnect to the zone and party i was in ( thank god for gw reconnect when it does work lol )

though I have never done it, it does sound like a good idea

(would also like one when/if someone else logs in while you are on--do you want to log off since another is trying to signon this account?)

If you want it to be seen you can put it on the wiki.

Cannot believe I haven't seen this idea mentioned any time in the last 5 years.
Its such an obvious improvement and I don't believe it can be that big a job to add even at this late date.

I don't think that it's a bad idea, but
a. It's something you can avoid pretty easily by not misclicking.
b. I imagine people hit alt+f4 trying to weapon swap almost as often.
c. I'm sure people will be complaining in a week about how they couldn't close the game in time for whatever reason (trying to dodge parent aggro on a slow computer, trying to save a survivor (yes, I know that zoning to GH is more reliable), etc.).

Well, if they complain about not being able to close the client quickly, then that's a good opportunity to tell them that if they close the client they may still lose survivor.
And I can't think of any other reason why they would need to quickly close the client.
And as long as it's an General option you can toggle, they can't complain since you can enable or disable it.

I've closed GW meaning to close an open browser window or something else so many times I can't even count. Confirm logout, why not close client?

I myself never closed out by trying to flag heroes, but a few times did it trying to close out of friends/guild page. I definetly agree
for the Alt+f4 comment, thats really hard to do by accident....

Anyway, there's no reason to not have this, so /signed.
Also, I read somewhere (no idea where so I can't provide a quote) that Anet can't read Sardelac for legal reasons. If you really want to get something implemented you'll have to post it on somewhere official like the wiki.

yes. i too think we need more confirmation messages for things we have told the software or game to do. there are not enough 'are you sure?... are you sure youre sure?... are you really really sure?' style messages as seen when clicking Yes boxes when loading into a new area. lets please make this game more windows users friendly and add more confirmations for our actions please.
JupiterStarWarrior
Honestly, I don't like the confirmation dialogues on any of my programs. One such program asks "Do you want to exit <program name>?" And I always think to myself "If I didn't want to exit, I would not have pressed the X or pressed Alt+F4." I don't want any of my other programs to ask me that either. And this includes Guild Wars. So...

Ive never had this personally happen to me, but a guild mate did this in Urgoz one night by accident, thinking he was closing his inventory.
The x out in the top right should be treated as a log out button.

Perhaps if people don't like the extra confirmation box Anet could allow reconnects (within 2 minutes or so) for players who close the client without logging out first. That way no one gets bothered by the extra click and people who accidentally click the x have a small window of time in which they can log back in. Don't know how possible that is or whether it's exploitable or not though.
HawkofStorms
I have actually done this once or twice.
But still, its not exactly a common problem.

Honesty I don't understand why there is an X at the top corner to begin with. There is a legitimate logout option so why have this? I would vote to just remove the button all together, then no problems, and much easier to implement.

And for survivor chicken mode escape, well, that seems more of an exploit option that I would frown upon. If your going to Die your going to die suck it up and re-roll. :P

Crusty: there is an x at the top because it is on all programs, not just GW. The Close, Minimize, and Maximize/Windowed buttons are on all programs (on the upper right on Windows, and on the upper left on Macs, iirc). I don't think that's something GW has control over...
Also, if that button wasn't there, how would you ever close the client?? Logging out doesn't close out of GW...

I hate it when programs keep asking stupid questions like that.
What I did since the very first time I played Guild Wars, was put the Menu on the upper right corner. That way you'll never click [X].

Seems like a good enough idea. As someone suggested, I would also vote to have the buttons removed. I think GW is the only game I've played that has those buttons when in full screen.

I like the idea, maybe combine it with the log-out box (log out, change character, close game, cancel). I get asked half a dozen times if I'm ready to enter an outpost in Cantha, so why not get asked if I accidentally hit the 'close game' x in the top right of the screen?

/signed to make it an option you can toggle in F11. I personally get annoyed by the pop ups on "This mission contains characters from other campaigns, do you wish to continue?" etc. Make it an option and that way the survivors can still rapidly escape, people who don't like pop ups don't get bugged by it and those who mis-click won't.
I doubt very much it'll be added but that seems like the most sensible solution for everyone. You'll still get people who don't realise it's an option and QQ that they closed the client or can't turn the message off but you can't please everyone :P
