Better late than never (new to GW)
FatDragon
Hi, I'm new to GW, and only really found out about it whilst playing the beta for Rift. So many people were making the obvious comparisons between games, which is where I heard about GW2, and therefore GW.
I'm currently downloading the GW trial, and thought I'd come here to say hello, while I wait.
I have a number of questions, probably most of which will be answered once this horrendous download is complete, and I can get into GW, but as usual, I'm eager and thirsty for more information
From what I can see of GW and forthcoming GW2, it seems to have a greater leaning towards role playing, than many other MMOs. Am I reading this correctly, or is it hope and wishful thinking? Being older (42 now ffs), I do miss the RP element, and feel that MMORPG actually means MMOG with a handful of role players who are ignored by developers, who, rightly for commercial reasons, spend their dev hours working on areas for which there is greater chance of bringing in the cash.
Further to that, how is the RP element in GW, the community, and any events?
Many thanks for any responses,

Guild Wars is not that big on RP elements. It lacks a lot of the crafting and personal trait aspects of other RPGs. Guild Wars 2, from the info on it, appears to have much more for the RP'er.
The community, as in many games is rather diverse. If you frequent these forums though, you'd get the impression that the GW community mostly consists of "action" game players who are more concerned with "beating" the game (a nonsensical idea, I know) and doing things as rapidly as possible with as few players as possible.
However, there are lots of more RPG oriented people in the game and some are lurking around the forums. There are even people older than 42!

Hey FatD
Welcome to GW
I know there have been RP guilds but I don't know whether there are any still active. There is a thread for Rp'ers over in Nolani though

Buy the trilogy - it's a great game

GW is better than most themepark MMOs in terms of RP, in that it has a functional and coherent storyline that really shows off your character as a hero of the world. Of course, that also could make it worse in terms of RP, because if you don't want to follow the main storyline you're SOL, especially in Factions and Nightfall where you'll be blocked from continuing at all until you beat certain missions.
GW2 will be much better than GW1 in terms of RP, since you'll actually have a variety of dialog choices and your personal story will branch with your decisions. Your character's personality will also be shaped by your decisions.
And (as always), the best RP is among friends doing whatever the hell they want in the game. RP guilds are around, some of them more hardcore than others.

You can find RP guilds out there, but they make up a small part of the GW community. Most of the Role Playing aspect of GW is what role you're going to play in your party - DPS, Healing, disruption, etc. Hope you enjoy the trial, there's a lot of fun to be had.
P.S. Once you hit the 40's, you don't need to say "ffs." Once someone hits 40, they've earned the right and privledge to say "dagnabit" instead!

From my point of view, gw is more involving because it has a story line you can easily follow. Also RP is a double edged sword: there are many players who attach the term rpg to a game if it offers levels and a customizable skill tree. If you are looking for something like this in gw, you will be disappointed. Neither of which is important and neither defines your role in this game.
The rpg element in gw derives from the roles you can fill or what you can be. Due to the dual class system you have a variety of things you can do - not in the scale of gw 2's different playstyles for each professions - but flexible nonetheless. If you like playing games for the sake of enjoying gameplay, GW is for you, if you expect regular updates to prolong your enjoyment (get something new to play with), GW will turn you down.
If you want to experience something unique in the realm of online games and learn about the story of the gw universe, in preparation of the sequel, then be patient with gw. You will curse the game, but it will grow on you if you give it some time and space to evolve in your mind.

I'm 64 and I've been playing GW for five years now. It's not all 13 year olds in this game.
If you live in US, find your nearest Walmart who carries (only in store) the GW Complete Collection. This is all three campaigns plus the Eye of the North expansion. You can also get that package in Europe, though usually online.
The complete download is almost 4GB, so if you purchase the game, use the -image command line to download the whole thing overnight. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Command_line
You can shop for an RP guild in Guild Connections. There are several around. You could also (if you haven't already) join guildwars2guru.com to get in on the RP conversations there.

Thanks for all the replies, and good information. I'll be trying it all out, and wandering over to the guilds section to see what I can find in the way of RP guilds.
Many thanks again

Welcome to Guild Wars! I'm 64, been playing GW since Prophecies went live. GW is unstructured RP, RP being where you find it IMHO.
GW 2 will have a personal story RP component that goes along with the mmo main story line; and many other excellent features besides. There is a Guild Wars 2 Guru and GW 2 wiki also where you can join the drool club!

Guild wars does not lend itself to role playing not that this has stopped people from doing it.
But its not common, you can tell by the way many people stand around in towns talking about none game stuff and the ones who refer to their characters as toons.
Decent trading opportunities and crafting etc would make role playing more appealing for many of us.
I really hope GW2 has a number of activities such as crafting that would then create a reason to role play.
Not holding my breath of course but I can hope.
