Do believe this topic is better suited for Questions and Answeres but untill a mod comes along...
Rit is about the top dog for solo farming and grouping for elite/high-end areas/quests.
But in my opinion playing through the game as a heal/protect monk, especially with other people, will grant you more knowledge of GW's mechanics.
Good team combos,Selecting the right skills, energy management and pre-protecting are just a few things you're pretty much forced to learn to be a successful monk.
Rather than just making an assassin and running into mobs smashing keys.

Stick with the Rit as your primary, its a bit OP now but not enough that ANet is likely to nerf it anytime soon.
For an alt or secondary, it really boils down to your playstyle.
Warriors are great damage dealers, and Adrenaline may be an aspect of the game you'd be interested in. They're a solid choice for melee.
Assassins are good too, gameplay is a bit more frenetic and risky than a Warrior, but it can be worth it. You'll be accused of solely being a farmbot though lol.
Mesmers are really good too, always were but the recent update seriously beefed them in PvE. It might take some getting used to the playstyle, but a good Mesmer can dominate (pun intended) the game. Some would say leave this to the Heroes' godly interrupting abilities though.
Those are the three I'd look into. A Rit is a very versatile character and can solo/group many areas, so your choice largely depends on what you want to play like.

my suggestion: try them all, you will find which profession you like and which you dont. If you like melee or casting, damage dealing or support etc. You can always delete a character and make a new one if you dont like it! Most of the professions have good things about them that you may enjoy playing and it would also help you to learn how they work anyways.

I would say it would be pretty easy for you to transition into a different mid-ranged caster type role by playing a Mesmer or a Necro...both are very fun to play and will allow you to be familiar with your role while trying something new!

My standard answer - whatever floats your boat.
There isn't really any specific "best" classes in GW. It mostly comes down to playstyle.
