Battle for Lion's Arch Hero Team
stephencolbert
Hey Guys.
So I've been unable to complete Battle for Lion's Arch with 5 heroes, and was wondering if anyone could help me with a team build that can clear them. I keep on getting swamped on the 2nd phase with the Jade constructs.
What I'm running right now (as ranger) is Discord caller with 3 discord necs and 1 panic mes and 1 SoS Rit. I've come to realize that it's probably not super efficient given that Discord can kill an enemy really quickly, but with 20+ whamming on you, it doesn't really matter.
I was thinking of adding some ele AoE to help clear them out when they bunch up at the first flight of stairs, but I'm still not exactly sure what to remove and what to replace.
Can anyone offer me some hero teams that could help me finish WiK? Thanks so much.

Since you're a ranger... Splinter barrage all the way. You can decimate the mobs with this simple combo. You can add heroes who will increase your damages, like a paragon (but no hero with splinter barrage: they use splinter on the monks instead
), or some more massive AoE damage in the mesmer/necro line (I didn't use SS for example but I guess that would be devastating).

Sir Baddock
I did it with the following build.
Myself (Warrior/Dervish, Enduring Scythe)
2 x Monk heroes (1 ZB, 1 WoH)
2 x Necro Heroes (2/3 of Sabway, Kept the healer and bomber, lost the SoS)
1 x Mesmer Hero (Panic / Paragon with defensive shouts)
2 x Ritualists (SoS / SoGM).
Cleared it in my first attempt after not playing the game for over 8 months.

Is this normal mode or hard mode?
In NM fire eles would be worth a go for big AoE, in HM (gulp) I guess panic/ineptitude mesmers.
{edit} I think you can disable Splinter on a hero and map a hotkey for "hero X cast skill Y on Z" to make sure it goes on you.

Sounds like you just don't have enough heals to keep you alive.
I'd go with yourself as a splinter barrage, or you could even bring For Great Justice, Barrage, and Save Yourselves if your Kurz/Lux rank is good. Bring along an SoS Rit, a SoGM Rit, a necro MM bomber, a Panic Mes, and a UA monk.
You should have enough damage, and the heals shouldn't be much of a problem.

Now I feel so dumb to go R/Rt because heroes can't use Splinter properly when I could use your trick and go R/W with SY (spammed thanks to Barrage and Rampage as One).
Thanks a lot for this tip. I guess I've been away for too long. ><
EDIT - @ MisterB: Yeah, I noticed they changed the AI: now they only cast Splinter on physical damage dealers. However, I still need to use Morte66's trick for 2 reasons: 1) I don't want him to cast it on the other physical damage dealers instead of me (on my support para, namely), and 2) I need to have Splinter before I pull the mobs since they're generally packed, and that's one free devastating shot (not a big deal, I could do it manually, but still, it's much easier with a hotkey).

My Sos Channeling rit casts Splinter Weapon on me quite well. 16 Channeling is a huge difference. I went R/P to buff the allied NPCs rather than /W for SY since more offense rolls normal mode easy enough. Favorable Winds, Anthem of Envy, Weariness, and Go for the Eyes will make your ranger allies smack everything down while you barrage them from the hill. Flag your SoS rit on the stairs adjacent to the hill so you're in casting range.
Sir Baddock
Sorry about that I made a mistake, was thinking of the Vanquish I had just done.
I used the exact party above but removed the SoGM Ritualist and Prot Monk. I think I also need to mention that every character in my team has a way to help others, Gwen = Defensive Paragon, Xandra = Defensive Spirits, Olias = MM Bombing + Aegis and Protective Spirit, the other two are WoH and the standard Sabway Xinrae's healer. Keep in mind I used the environment to my advantage, the enemies naturally funnel into the middle, at the start when the wave of Elementalists come out make sure you aggro them quickly so none of the NPC rangers die. After that wave it's pretty much as easy as standing on the stairs / slightly back and letting the NPC's / Spirits / Minions engage and then destroying them.
PS: Panic Mesmer can be dropped for something else, Elementalist, etc. I play a Warrior too so if you're something like an Elementalists or Mesmer consider getting a Warrior in the hero spot a mesmer goes in.

I went on my sin and brought Assassin's promise, Pain Inverter, and Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support, plus a few other skills. AP pretty much allowed me to spam PI and AS.
I had been stuck at Temple of Intolerable. I went through 2 times with various heroes and failed, then I brought these 5 and it wasn't that hard at all. I used the same 5 for BoLA and the team only died once; most of the time I had the team flagged at the first staircase nearest the entrance. The foes never got beyond the first staircase.
Hope this helps.

This is the battle where those EotN consumables comes in handy.
If you got the summoning stone for those 3 shining blade allies ( war horn ? ), this is a good place to use it.

I did this (NM) with H/H a month or two ago.
Just stack the odds in your favour, MM, spirits, unstrippable boosts like EbSoH. With 5 Heroes its gotta be so easy. Panic/Instab mesmer, MM, SoS Hybrid, SOGM Rt, RoJ Monk?/UA/Earth Ele/Curses Nec (loving pain of disenchantment over SS, foes shouldnt be alive long enough for SS to matter).
I ran as BHA as is my preference, PI, EBSoH, volley, d/shot. Could run barrage too, either will work, and yes just pre-cast Splinter on yourself, its not hard even without mapping keys (AI seems to put splinter on me if it can see me hitting multiple targets so i tend to have it on for the second volley).
If you're still stuck, use cons, stones and use the NPC's to your advantage and keep dropping back as they die.
BTW Balanced wins vs WiK, Discord seems to make things v.hard work

Let me see if I remember I used:
AotL Necro
SoS Rit
ER Infuser
and then a monk and another hench... don't remember which.
Now that you can cram heroes in there, I'd suggest:
You as a damage dealer (preferably a physical damager to use Splinter.)
SoS Rit
Panic Mesmer
AotL Necro
ER Infuser
Healing Burse Monk

It's been done H/H before the 7-hero update, so it should be even easier now:

If you're worried what to change as a Ranger, I'd say (disclaimer: without real experience with Rangers in PvE) bring a UA Smiter + Panic Mesmer in place of Orion and Alesia, and then whatever you want for yourself.

If this is HM all bets are off.
But for NM, with the proviso that I don't actually play a ranger, here's a team based on my experience as warrior/necro/rit...
1. Player ranger with Barrage, Ebon Standard of Honor, Tryptophan Signet, whatever else you like.
2. DPS channeling/blocking Rit. 12+1+3 Channeling, 12 Spawning Power. Splinter Weapon, Signet of Spirits, Bloodsong, Agony, Ancestors' Rage, Spirit Burn, Spirit Siphon, Essence Strike.
3. Minion bomber and prot necro. 12+1+3 Death Magic, 9 Soul Reaping, 9 Protection Prayers. Aura of the Lich, Animate Bone Minions, Death Nova, Masochism, Putrid Bile, Aegis, Protective Spirit, Shield of Absorption.
4. Panic Mesmer. 12+1+3 Domination, 9+1 Fast Casting, 9+1 Inspiration. Panic, Mistrust, Cry of Frustration, Wastrel's Demise, Power Drain, Leech Signet, Channeling, hard res from secondary profession. [I don't normally trust heroes to run Wastrel's, but with so many foes Channeling should give them more energy than usual.]
5. Fire nuker ele. 12+1+3 Fire Magic, 12+1 Energy Storage. Mind Blast, Liquid Flame, Mark of Rodgort, Rodgort's Invocation, Glowing Gaze, Fire Attunement, Glyph of Elemental Power, hard res from secondary profession.
6. Heal and prot rit. 12+1+3 Restoration, 10+1 Spawning power, 8 Protection Prayers. Spirit Channeling, Recuperation, Life, Protective Was Kaolai, Mend Body and Soul, Spirit Light, Aegis, Shield of Absorption. [Recuperation is a 25e beast but it affects allies, including your minions and the shining blades. Disable and micro it so it's timed/placed right.]
I left off my usual SoGM rit because it's a single target build and this is an AoE fight.
All the AoE is non-scattering, to keep things bunched in the overlapping AoE.
Set the healer to avoid combat and the rest to guard.

Bring an Aura of the Lich hero.
With all the corpses coming around as soon as that hting recharges he can pull up like 7-15 minions easily, all at level 20/21 so they can take a hit.
I can't recall exactly which I had but it was one of these 3.
SolS healer that had Signet of Spirits. Panic Hero, ER hero.
2/3 of those are what I filled in my last 2 hero slots.
That was before the update.
Now with the full use of Heroes, I think you can just slap in some damage dealers to help you out.
Recommended thing is to bring an exp scroll if the Heroes start to die, the exp scroll can get that death penalty removed off them which is really all that matters, since if they're death penalty is low they're good to go.
Retreat to the stairs after awhile it's like this godly defensive point where they all just ball up nicely and plenty of NPC's are there to be minion fodder. Use that point in time to smash these guys. Since the NPC's auto revive later, you just need to deal the damage.
Before with Alesia and Orion the damage was pretty low but with the extra 2 heroes you can toos in this shouldn't be a problem you can now replace Orion with a better damage ele like Savannah's heat or something which will really make these guys drop in Normal mode. Alesia can then also be replaced with an N/rt who can support the team and maybe add a bit of damage depending on how you spec.
I wouldn't think it very hard now that you can replace the level 10's, but bring the Aura of the Lich necro, that + masochism turned difficulty into me dying once from overextention. Hell you could probably bring 2 aura of the liches.

If you have it, you can get by with Volley and take another elite, like Broad Head Arrow, for dazing the mursaat, or if you can manage it glass arrows/punishing shot/burning arrow to spike when you need single target damage. Splinter only works on 4-5 of your arrows depending on if your hero has runes or not and the +10ish damage you lose on each arrow may be worth the elite slot.
Also, little trick, go warrior secondary, and take I Will Avenge You!. All the allies that spawn in this mission, their bodies never dissolve when they die, and each will fuel IWAY!. If you camp the stairs at the start, about 4-5 lion guards will 'leroy' right off the bat, giving you a IWAY buzz that lasts it's full recharge, and throughout the mission a lot of allies will bite the dust. Even with 0 strength. You get 25% IAS and 3 pips of regen for the duration of the fight, non-stripable. With Warrior secondar you can also use save yourselves if you have it.
Other then that, equalize your numbers, as said, MMs and SoS helps alot, a panic mes is great to aide nuking and shut down lots of guys. Instead of a traditional ele nuker I took in a Smiting/Divine hero, with RoJ and the 2 party wide DF heals, divine intervention, Judges Insight and smite hex and condition. Last slot was an N/Rt resto to push red bars with Spoil Victor as an elite. I put my extra protection stuff MM and gave the SoS rit a little extra resto.

I'd rather go with Rampage as One, for a guaranteed permanent, non-elite 25% IAS and 3 pips of regen...

Like said b4... you ranger rit splintered with EVAS EBSOH.
Heros: a sos rit, roj mm, roj healer, roj prot, mesmer. You can mess around a little in the beginning but keep heros flagged back and when the bosses start rolling in... set spirits by 1st set of stairs and flag all heros around corner. They will ball up and Splinterbarrage/ROJ will mow them down. Move spirits back to right past the stairs and repeat.

Not trying to sound snotty, but Discord builds are actually relatively awful most of the time. It is a very easy but inefficient solution. Anyway, let's get constructive.
This mission has a lot of foes and a lot of fleshy bodies. A minionbomber fares well in such areas. He should also pack Aegis and Prot spirit since there isn't really place for it anywhere else due to the fact that we only have six slots. Defensive ST rits aren't great with minionbombers and we cannot afford a slot for an E/Mo. (2/6)
You are playing a physical, thus splinter weapon is amazing considering we established that there would be a lot of foes. Your earlier problem was that you were overwhelmed, spirits and heals can take some pressure off. A defensive SoS rit with splinter weapon seems to be in order. (3/6)
In regards to healing, you mostly want party healing since the SoS rit has nice spot heals. UA monk fits the bill nicely. (4/6)
You will face dangerous casters as well as lots of clumped foes if you make a stand at the stairs. A domination and a illusion mesmer for shutdown and AoE damage would be reasonable. (6/6)
With that setup you will have both minions and spirits to take some pressure off, you will have plenty of AoE damage, at least three resses (UA+2 on the mesmers), strong shutdown, spot healing and AoE healing. You should be fine.

me as splinter barrage with PI and ebon support wards.
2 monk heroes with WoH and various heals / prots (prot spirit, shielding hands, spirit bond)
necro MM hero with Jagged Bones + Spirit Bond support
Ele hero with SH and other fire spams, no other AoE skills though.
Rit hero with SoS, splinter wep, DPS, Agony and a few monk prots to ease pressure off monk heroes (spirit bond, extinguish, etc.)
not a very good setup, but I eased NM without having to use cons / any DP removal, think the worst I had was 30% on me as I was AFK tanking the Jade Cloaks at the end ^_^

Sorry reviving an older thread but recently returned and I've been having difficulty with this mission and this is one of the few threads with 5h builds I found....
I wanted to try the builds suggested here but dont know how to use the references e.g. OAVDMIxmOqwORd4RY46BVVBA - where do I go to look these up?
Sorry, basic question but thought I'd pop it here since I may have specific questions later.....

Finally managed to get through - I have to say, the WiK missions are well designed...challenging but far from impossible. I went with CLs suggested builds above, but key for me was learning how to macro some of the skills (e.g. spirit placement) and playing aggressively rather than defensively. I still had to take a couple of more shots at the mission while I tried different tactics but my final run was almost anticlimactic.

So i've read tons of threads on Battle for Lion's Arch and I just can't complete it with Heroes. I've copied (slightly modified) Crystal Lake's build and I'm totally fine until the VERY LAST WAVE which just overwhelms me every single time.
I'm a Sin, but I'm running as Barrage Ranger with some spirits for blocking. The last wave is absolutely killer. I've wiped, used a Powerstone and rewiped until I lose. Burned cons, summons, everything. For the last wave, I position my team, just around the corner of the first bridge and line up spirits to take the first assault but still get overwhelmed.

I'm a Sin, but I'm running as Barrage Ranger with some spirits for blocking. The last wave is absolutely killer. I've wiped, used a Powerstone and rewiped until I lose. Burned cons, summons, everything. For the last wave, I position my team, just around the corner of the first bridge and line up spirits to take the first assault but still get overwhelmed.

hmm unless your doing in HM, NM shouldn't be any issue. I mean I beat it afk one time, wasn't planning to but got a phone call and 15ish min after the mission is done. What i bring like always for this mission was mm, mm, and mm, and 1 sos and SoGM. Flag 3 mm in a ~ 125-160 degree formation at the bottom of the first stair, and 2 rit on top of the stair. Set back and let them come to you. If your a caster you can bring AOE and stand on top of the hill next to the stair and bomb the hell out of them when your mm block form a meal shield.

I tried it a few more times and that last wave got me again. I finally hired someone for 5k to run me through it. I would have liked to do it on my own, but I just wanted to get those Oppressor points for my HoM.
