Hello All,
I am coming to Guild Wars after a long time away, primarily to earn things for the Hall of Monuments in GW2 and to experience the story of the different chapters. My question is...
Is there a certain class/skill build which is good for soloing through the storyline, I assume groups will be hard to come by with GW1 this late in the life of the game.
I normally find myself playing the melee type characters in MMO's if that makes a difference.

Just take heros/henchmen and ull be fine.. Dont go out there alone!

soloing is only good for farming....and i guess that most missions and storyline is impossible to solo or simply would take ages to complete...
Use heros and it's good, but i strongly recommend u to group with other players, that makes the things easier (sometimes) and it's funnier....
that's why this game is dying, u don't need to group anymore.....

Yes, 7 heroes now allowed in party. So start in Nightfall, finish Nightfall and get lots of heroes! Then, off to Eye of the North and the Hall of Monuments.
Warrior is good melee, as is the Dervish. Dervish has just been not merely buffed but rebuilt, so hard to say which is more fun.
In Nightfall you will get a Warrior hero and a Dervish hero early on. The combo of a Warrior and a Dervish is nice, which ever one you are, because the Dervish adds good AoE while the Warrior has high single target damage.
Whichever, just starting out it is good to have a longbow in weapons slot #4. Don't need to be a W/R. Because all you will use the longbow for is pulling and starting combat. Much later on, the longbow is for pulling only, if that. But in the beginning it sure helps!
Heroes are much better than henchmen and with 7 properly set up heroes in your party now, any class that can make rude gestures will probably get you through the game!

Thanks for the helpful advice all.

Heroes are much better than henchmen if you have skills unlocked. If you don't even have attunements unlocked for elementalist, for example, then it's not worth the hassle.
For soloing (i.e. with heroes), necromancers/ritualists/mesmers have the best synergy. Warriors, Dervishes, and Assassins are melee so more hero flagging is required (although with "Save Yourselves!" this is less of a problem. For monks, unless you're running RoJ (Ray of Judgment) you can't do much damage and with heroes you need to be damage rather than heal otherwise the heroes don't know what to cast/attack and choose ridiculous targets.

You can play the game with any profession from any campaign and do quite well.
While playing prophecies is very slow going and you don't get your added ATT points until later, it's now (thanks to a recent update) the only place you can get the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title.
So there are pluses and minuses to any campaign.
If you are in a hurry though, I recommend Nightfall, followed by EotN, factions, then prophecies. Feel free to ask for help when starting. Just about everyone I know is more than happy to help newbies.
Prophecies has always been the only place to get LDOA

Apologies for jumping into the thread but, why EotN after Nightfall?
I've just started playing again with my wife and we're working our way through Nightfall currently.
We were thinking we might need to go Prophecies next to get some of the Elite skills but, honestly, don't really know

Probably to pick up the rest of the heroes.
I personally would advise against finishing EotN before Prophecies or you'll trigger War in Kryta content, which will not only make some of the explorables more difficult to navigate but also muddy the storyline.
That said, there's nothing wrong with doing 2/3-3/4 of North to get the heroes and then switching. But really, one should have plenty of heroes after finishing NF to quite handily get through the other campaigns.

After Nightfall, most will want to pick up the third necromancer (Livia) for making sabway or discordway teams, the second ritualist (Xandra) for making spiritway teams, and the second mesmer (Gwen) because a domination mesmer plus an illusion mesmer make a good pair on about any team.
Along the way you will also pick up another monk, another ele, another warrior, and another ranger, if you need them. Optionally you can also pick up another dervish.
A number of decent Prophecies elites, such as Aura of the Lich, are also available from bosses in EotN. The same is true for other campaigns. It is often easier to cap an elite in EotN than in its own campaign. This is partly because the bosses always spawn (unlike most Prophecies bosses) and are always in the same place, so you don't have to keep rezoning and running around trying to find the boss you need.
