Do you still play NM?
wilebill
HM when there is a reason or reward. I prefer Normal Mode; but on the other hand rarely do anything in the game these days unless it is for a reason or reward.
Perkunas
If I were able to play right now, it would be NM. If they had left the 600/smite alone, I would be spending more time in HM, in Nebo Terrace.

Wow, I'm actually surprised at the amount of NM responses. I guess that elitist HM pool isn't as big as I imagined, lol.

For me, one of the "hardest" missions was Warband of Brothers, especially that first room on the 2nd level where there are like 3 mobs of Charr. Last night I cleared that mission pretty effortlessly and didn't even wipe at the end again the Effigy monsters.

Ghull Ka
Pal of mine came back from WoW to farm statues for his HoM.
We did the FoW, UW, Deep, Urgoz and are now doing DoA with 3 of us and heroes, all in Normal Mode so far. No sense in doing it in Hard Mode, it doesn't give him a better statue. And two req12 inscribable vertebreakers aren't worth significantly more than one req12 inscribable vertebreaker, soooo.... ;-)
Normal Mode ftw. HM is only for farming rep points, really, for me.

Even with the 7 hero update i am not tempted much to play HM (yet).
Still enough to do thats better/easier to do in NM.
Besides that, i still need to finish Prophecies and NF, dont even have HM yet in those campaigns.

Ever since 7 heroes update, HM is EZ mode. I don't see any point of playing NM anymore even for title points anymore.

HM has been "EZ mode" for a long time: HM is much easier now than NM was when they introduced HM. There is no challenge left in the game, unless you make one for yourself (see "record book" here on guru).
If the reward scales with/requires HM, then you go HM. If not, than NM is obviously faster. You rarely have a choice: the game is telling you what to play.
Stolen Souls
I do as much as I possibly can in HM. The better rep/bounties/SS/LB/etc make it worth it to me. However, I won't do something in HM if I feel I'm sure to get wiped and waste my time.
Eleonora Morgan
I've got 18 characters spread over two accounts. Only my main has completed everything in HM, after getting GWAMM on her she's just gathering dust. The other 17 are lucky to have completed even one campaign. So yes, plenty left for me to do in NM.
Gabs88
Kinda this for me to, I do all the campaign stuff, running inbetween places, this and that in HM. But for EOTN i simply go NM first because you miss out on points by doing it in reverse (going over 80k points means you get none in NM).
EchoDelta
I play NM for the War in Kryta missions. Or if I ever get the whim to work on cartography, it'll be in NM as well. No elitist here. FYI people can still struggle in HM even with 7 heroes. Plus the cost of effectively equipping all heroes is high. To this day I can't understand why people have to be smug. Stay away from me please.
MithranArkanere
I still play NM... in pre-Searing.
Kharmin
I'm a very casual gamer with limited online time due to family, work, etc... I have only finished EotN once and Factions once. I play NM because, quite frankly, it's easier for me. I do end up missing out on a lot of special missions and whatnot because all of the PUGs I see are wanting HM only.
Swingline
Reason I play HM...
- More goldies from mobs and chests.
- Vanquisher and LMotN title
- Rep Points.
- Double drops from end chests in FoW, UW, Deep, Urgoz, DoA and EoTN Dungeons.
- When it gives some other reward besides the above 4.
Reasons I play NM...
- Comfortable Skill Capping.
- Comfortable Cartographer(if you missed it when vanquishing).
- Bringing a new character through content.
- Easy statures For HoM(was a reason till I got 50/50)
- Farming nic items
- When there are no distinguishable rewards from NM and HM.
This pretty much sums it up.

No risk no reward! I like as much challenge in MMOs as possible because it usually means the best rewards.

The other day we did a bogroots run and the only requirement was to use a character that you are horrible at playing. Two of us playing monks were the suckiest monks ever with awful builds, but still managed to keep the team somewhat alive (most of the time... sorta). Giving each other loads of shit for sucking had me laughing until I cried.

We did that in HM in case anyone wondered ;D
But yeah, most of the time I guess I do play in HM as I do a lot of FoWSC, ZBs, MTSC, EotN Dungeons etc. I'm done with my Vanquishing now apart from the odd ZV that catches my eye. All my skill capping was in NM, now I just have NM EotN dungeons left to do for the title. With my other characters, I play though storylines in NM. Why am I going to do it in HM and make it harder on myself?
Yesterday I threw together a party from the alliance of people to do NM Rragar's and told people to bring what they wanted characterwise. Aside from having two monks, we were very physical with myself as a Necro and had an Orders Ele. We all had loads of run ribbing each other on Vent and lol-ing as we plowed through the dungeon. Everyone said they actually enjoyed the change in pace for once
So yeah, NM can still be fun.

correct response is: Whenever I play my ele.
real response is: Whenever I am trying to get non-max drops (R5/13,R6/14 shields), run people moas and spiders, use keys I get, or get collector trophies for Nick (less collector drops in HM).
AFAIK R8 drops don't happen in HM often. I get maybe 1-5 every week, whereas in normal mode it's pretty much every 4th drop (granted most are nonmax).
Reasons to go HM:
"Better" rewards: golds drop more...but since most gold drops aren't worth anything... IDed drops that are non-rare sell for more to merchant (~50%-100% more)
Greens drop more from bosses
You reached past the NM reputation rank and haven't maxed the reputation track of the zone you're in.
You haven't finished Vanquishing
You've never done that dungeon in HM
You've never done that mission in HM
You want tomes
You rely on spells/autoattacks for damage (Illusion Mesmers, SS necros,VoR mesmers)
You do the same damage in NM and HM because you don't use physicals, minions, or elementalists at all
Practice interrupting short cast times

ErrantVenture
Only for specific farms (to get low req items) or for mapping/skill capping. Otherwise there's not a lot of point to playing NM.
Voodoo Rage
Again, as a guy who use to be intimidated by HM, I just did a full EoTN campaign this week in HM and honestly it was almost an identical experience compared to what I was used to doing NM and only 3 heroes. Even that part of Destruction's Depths where you fight off waves of Destroyers beside the Norn went nice and smoothly for me. I guess the next stop for me is to venture into HM dungeons and maybe try a HM FoW run.
Sorn Xarann
No I do not.
Golgotha
I go back and forth. No rhyme or reason really.
Trader of Secrets
wat! no, thats the heroes job

The reason it's taken so long to implement 7 heroes is because Anet initially felt this would be overkill for pve, as all the nm mission and quest content can be completed with henchmen, and more easily with 3 heroes, while elite areas could be done with two people and 6 heroes with a little challenge if they were well prepared.
There's been several instances when overpowered game mechanics swept through gw and heroes were one of the biggest methods of player power-creep, allowing everyone to have more control over how they interacted with the game, and therefore making the game easier in a lot of instances. In several cases, Anet said that implementing 7 heroes would not be good for the game and they refused for so long because they knew the challenge would be eliminated at this point. In fact, the sheer speed of reactions that heroes have when using skills are why they were eventually kicked from HA. By bringing in the 7 hero capability, Anet seems to be saying that they're satisfied that the majority of people have exhausted the bulk of the game at this stage and they're simply giving everyone the fredom to blast through the game to get whatever they want/need from it. It means they're comfortable that GW has met their expectations and they're happy that GW2 is coming sooner rather than later, and that there's enough there now for players to keep themselves occupied til the new game launches, even though it probably won't be this year. |
GW isn't what it was. I have no doubt Arenanet still makes $ off of in-game content sold and game sales. But it looks to me like they're relaxing control over the game for now until its successor arrives.
Don't believe me? Think about why D2 years back(dunno if they still do) sold SOJs online. The game was dying, so Blizz figured they could just as well make money off the game and subsidize WoW. Soon as WoW entered the scene, D2 was dead in the water.
FoxBat
Honestly no. As a company, Anet doesn't pay close attention to GW1 at all. All this easing up/dumbing down happened under Stumme's watch. Lindsay was against it. The head designer changes and GW's entire philosophy changes with it. A new designer might reverse course yet again, that's just how it goes.

I agree. Since the release of the 7 heroes (which I love, so much better than using a team split with heroes/hench). Hard Mode has become a lot easier.
I still play in NM though, primarily to test team builds out first though. If it clears NM, then I try HM. If it fails in HM, then I disband the idea.
I have to admit though, going for the Guardian Title did become a lot easier now. I tried before with hero/hench, and some missions were hard. Put me in a bad mood whenever I failed because the monk henchman ran out of energy due to poor energy management.
Though, with the new release of the 7 heroes, it gives me more of a reason to buff up all my heroes, allowing for more builds to be made.

I play NM everyonce in a while when I need to map a spot that I missed on my last VQ pass, but thats it.
oscarmk
I have only played HM once, I vanquished some part I can't remember in factions and that was it, I didn't find it more satisfying. So I only play Normal pretty much. Maybe it is because I am mostly PvPer.
Bassma
Believe it or not but NM is still better for getting those resource drops you like for christmas or easter or chinese new years, etc. etc. Mobs drop faster in NM and you can solo a lot faster an easier in NM. NM is an easy farm for several resources players like to buy all the time. I've always gotten more resource stuff playing NM than I ever did HM solo plus a lot faster too.
