Does anet ban by ip adress?
Asp
My brother and I both play guild wars, but have seperate accounts so we can play together. Unfortunately, he is also an avid botter. I don't do it myself, especially because Anet has cracked down on botters, but he does it alot on his account. Is it possible that his botting habits can get me banned? I have asked him to stop, and don't benefit from his botting in any way, if that makes a difference. Because if it will get me banned, i am definitly jsut going to do a huge purge on all his bots.
Darcy
It is a possibility. They have, in the past, perma-blocked all accounts of a botter. If they scooped up yours along with his, you would need some proof that you are two separate account owners.

From what I've heard, Anet has a tendency to ban all accounts tied to the botting account. If both were registered to the same address, use the same master account, or bought from the store with the same credit card, then both are at risk, regardless of whether or not your account benefited from the botting.
As far as IP bans go, it wouldn't surprise me if all accounts that regularly used that IP address were banned, but any new accounts added afterwards would not be affected.
If you're that worried about it, I recommend not partying up with your brother whatsoever, or doing anything that would tie your accounts together. That way when he gets caught, you have a better chance of avoiding a perma.

When i played cod2 on clanbase my brother used hacks in public games and got his cdkey banned, that cdkey was registered on our ip and that was linked to my cdkey, so a conflict come and basically i was know as a returned hacker and was banned instantly and appeal failed.
I don't knw how you would do things but if it was me i'd make him stop. Theres nothing to properly proov that your not botting on 1 acc and playing another, it doesnt matter what you say, if he gets banned, your banned.
Once that happens change ip, new emails, new games.

I know for a fact that they do look at IP and can ban multiple accounts. One of my guildies was trolling KISS during that one event (can't remember the name) on his alternative account and both received a temporary ban for offensive language. The accounts were created on separate IPs (since it was once his friends), and therefore, have different master accounts.
Also, going way-back, during the GW item duping. When my first account was banned for duping items, I periodically logged into a alt account that belonged to my friend which was also banned during the "mass ban," though it committed no offences.
I would say there is a HUGE chance you could also be banned.

I'd doubt it. The existence of NATs makes IP banning sure to sweep in innocent people. When these forums are full of people complaining every time they think the servers are having connectivity issues, I'm sure that we'd have heard quite a few complaints from wrongly-IP-banned people if that were happening.

It's unlikely that they'd ban the IP itself since it's an easy matter for anyone to change their IP address.
It is likely that if they find a botter on that IP address, they will ban all accounts associated with that IP address. I can also tell you from the perspective of someone who administrates gaming support departments that post-ban, it is highly unlikely that you would get your account unbanned. We hear the "it was my brother/roommate/friend" defense daily, and unless there's some pretty compelling proof that these accounts were owned by separate people (chat logs, purchase proof/credit cards, etc.) a company is going to err on the side of THEIR security over YOUR satisfaction.
In your situation, your best defense is to be pro-active and report his activities. You'll also want to hope that he has never used your account for his activities, because any good will you may earn by reporting him can be negated by that.
Quite frankly, if your brother hasn't been smart enough to bot on a unique IP address, he's not smart enough to keep from being caught - which means the ban is an inevitable fact. All you can do is decide NOW if you will be caught in the mess he's created, or help distinguish yourself from him/his activities before the ban hammer strikes.

alright guys, thanks for all the great responses
i really do not want to report him, because he is my brother and all, but i will try and convince him to stop. this thread should be enough proof
if that doesnt work, ill just figure out how to play on a different ip so i dont go down with him

Pray to god their eeny-meeny-minnie-moo systems don't target your account.
Yes do they ban by IP's.

You don't have to worry about IP ban. Many people are playing GW from Internet cafés where usually you're hidden behind NAT - blocking gateway wouldn't be efficient, as with such solution ANET would block both fair players and botters playing from this IP. What's more many players are connecting, for instance, through ADSL with dynamic IP addressing. Banning ADSL IPs isn't reasonable, as the same IP addresses are migrating between different clients of ADSL network.

They do or at least have banned in the past using IP addresses.
I'm on a dynamic IP and once it stumbled upon one that GW had banned and i got a message saying my IP had been banned for multiple EULA infringements. Luckily had nothing to do my accounts, restarted my router and problem gone.

I wouldn't think they would ban based on ip address alone, I am on virgin broadband and several customers can have the same ip address apparently though I am not sure how that works.
Sometimes if I access rapidshare it says my ip address is already in use so I guess it is true.
Anyway the ip address is dynamic so it can change though its at the whim of virgin and might stay the same for weeks.
I guess you could write to anet asking for specifics and stating that 2 people use the same ip address though that should be clear enough if they check the game logs.
One person running 2 copies of the game is unlikely to chat to himself during play, they could also check suspicious transfers of items and money.
Wouldn't report him though since he is family and guild wars is just a game.

It would be better for the Guild Wars community as it is to report your brother for botting. Your brother or not he is making the playing experience worse for people.
Hobbs
Make an almost negligible positive difference in a community of people I have no attachment to or make potentially a quite large negative difference in a familial relationship. I know which one i'd choose.
Saru The Boss
I have 5 accounts. (Well, had, prior to the May 2010 Dhuumsday event.)
I ran three on my main computer, and two on a different one.
Main computer: 2/3 got permabanned.
Alternate computer: 1/2 got permabanned.
all of mah stuffffff QQ D:
In any case, from my experience, Anet will ban who they please with a lame reason and won't have to provide a legitimate reason to do so. It's stupid and harsh and kinda silly, but it's in their ToS that you have to sign to play, which is like signing away your soul.
Once you get banned, or your account gets marked for botting, you have no hope; no chance of ever getting it back, by means of destroying the "botted" items or pleading with NCSoft support. According to their support, it is physically possible for there to be error in their system when it comes to detecting/banning bots. It truly is eternal GW damnation.
tl;dr: anet </3
I really wish you the best of luck.

What exactly do you call botting?
Anecdote time!
So I turned on my big smartphone and a picture of a very attractive young lady popped up. She didn't have on much clothing and looked at whoever made the photo in a very sensual and sexy way.
She was underage at the time the picture was taken and it's the daughter of one of my friends...
A guy saw that and immediately told several other people. One of those people figured that this would not stand and confronted me while there were several colleagues and strangers standing around.
The things I have on that phone are apparently "not good" and I'm a "bad person" for having that and I "could be reported to the police" and even "go to jail".
In reality her family name started with a Z, the photo was automatically imported from facebook (it's her freaking user picture) and my phone, for some reason, opens up at the last person in the list when I press "contacts".
I was helping her out with stuff at the time so she was in my favourites which makes her picture get really big.
So now everyone thinks I'm a pedophile who oggles at pictures of colleagues/friends' daughters.
FML
I have since turned off the facebook importing stuff and deleted the picture cache and now everyone is a generic dull grey outline of a face.
I hate stupid people.
Anyway. Make sure it really is bannable botting. I'm talking real automating of the game. Not putting a C-space on a logitech G15 key or WTS string.
If it is, then you need to man up and tell him to quit. If he doesn't, then you need to man up and report him. Either way, you need to man up.
This will help:
If he doesn't want to stop botting to prevent you from being banned, then he cares more about himself than he does about you.
If you don't report him because he's "family" or "my brother and all", together with the above, then you care more about him than he does about you.
You're too nice.
