Bringing GW back to live again? Possible?

A quote along those lines: "We were under the impression that...everyone was going to be moving over to GW2. We knew that there would be a Live Team that would be very small and we were believing that it would just be a maintenance only role, bug fixes here and there, in order to make sure the game is polished and maintained."

Adding members to that team (and therefore content) is then used as the basis for making recent balance decisions, you get the idea. I think they figured out abandoning GW1 outright was a bad idea but the notion that everyone will automatically move to GW2 seems...foolish.

this is what i mean xD the "pvp community" isnt just the high tier competent people it consists of the new/low tier and bottom feeders as well what a high tier player sees in pvp is completly opposite of what a low tier/bottom feeder sees just saying. "your not a high tier player so you have NO say" just shows how competitive the pvp community is

/end trolling

anyway im gonna stop arguing here

edit: sorry put hostile instead of competitive xD
No where did I ever say only high tier represent the pvp community. No one individual group represents a community. A community is the collection of those groups. Low, middle, high end, and whatever else you choose to label the groups. But the low-end alone does not represent all the pvp community just as the high-end doesn't.

You tried using one or a few experiences with either low end pvpers or, and much more likely, PvEers playing PvP, and attempted to use it as an argument that most players hold the belief that you shouldn't bring a res in HA/GvG. That experience is not valid evidence to support that claim, and I already explained to you why your claim is factually incorrect. Those people you played with do not represent the beliefs generally accepted by the PvP community as a whole.

eg: if you look read most of them they say bring optional skills based on certain situations, people are only choosing from them as well when there are a lot of better skills out there for the skills they list as non optional.
if you go into ra youll see assassins bringing builds with almost no defense/survival skills and they get roflstomped by pretty much everything unless there is a strong monk in their group

what people are doing now is blindly copying pvx builds and making very hard to use build instead of a build that you would know by heart.

also people are still confusing the pvxs theres pvx.wikia.com and gwpvx.com a lot of people are going to the outdated pvx.wikia.com and using outdated builds

2)ra and loldex are the only place you would bring a res unless your team specifically says they want you to bring a res signet ive been kicked from ha/gvg groups because i brought res signet without asking them

3)well duh :P never said it wasnt

4)most metas work horribly well but a ton of people find them boring,
for most of the metas you need a ton of coordination
eg: chain lightning spike you need to spike near the same time/target(s)
for this reason the groups require vent/ some sort of verbal communication that not everyone in this game has or uses.
most people like to have vent as a option and not forced upon them
1) People should know that PvX has migrated to gwpvx and when they go to wikia and see the horrid mess it has become that should turn on alarm bells. Copying a PvX bar normally means you are running an at least decent bar and with practice and usage you will get to know the bar. And sins are useless except in split.

2) Don't bring res=don't win unless you are backline, flagger, split, or are an exception (e.g. MB ele in HA with MH, BF, SoC because of your team build)

3) If communication means success why are you harping on about using vent? People want to win and vent is free; there's no real reason why you shouldn't have it.

4) If you find meta boring, BYOB, but you need communication for that (refer to part 3)

Guild Wars is a game that's going to be active in bursts now, when new content is released. It's a credit to the game design and the buy-to-play principle that people can step away from it and return when new stuff is going on without being behind in levels or gear etc or out of pocket for a few months' inactivity.

Ultimately, GW is old and many players have completed the majority of the content that they care to complete. Is it a carry-over from the subscription-MMO mindset that online games should last forever and ever? I still play Guild Wars now and then. I suspect we'll still get costumes for events etc. so if you want to convince Anet everyone is still interested, microtransactions are probably the way to go!

Completely free? Heh. That would only bring half-hearted players that are here just because it's free, that would look around and cause more trouble than anything else, since they'll lose nothing if the account gets banned, they just have to make another one.

All you need to bring more players is a sale in digital distribution platforms, like Steam.

Every time there's a Guild Wars Steam sale, the starting cities get filled with newbies.

Same thing was said re Everquest when EQ2 came out.. 6 years ago I think. Everquest is now 12 years old with ancient graphics, no new expansions, small team and content updates. In fact, they opened retro servers back to the original graphics and game. It is still plugging along, with loyal players.

Good game is good. GW is unique, and GW2 won't even come close to filling the niche GW holds.

I forsee GW being around a very long time.. and I also predict after the GW2 hysteria at launch dies down and people are finding it is just another MMO, basically, a lot will come back.

I was thinking the same thing. The more I read about GW2, the less I want to abandon GW in favor of GW2. It sounds like it's going to be "just another MMO," which doesn't sound all that compelling.

Now, I trust the ANet team so I'm willing to give them a chance, but so far it sounds like GW2 will have the least interesting aspects of GW combined with the least interesting aspects of WoW.

Good, so I'm not the only one who is not in orgasmitronic excitement over GW2. Quite frankly, the best way to keep GW1 alive is to keep doing what they are doing now - releasing new annual content, adding additional stuff to the store worth buying, and updating the game to allow for better solo play with Heroes and Henchies. It actually wouldn't surprise me at all if Anet was secretly planning a way to make GW1 a fully off-line Single-player game at some point in the future - they're kinda sneaky like that ;} (*hint*hint*)

So no one can hide. Everyone's a winner.
Smart idea, but lacks many things.

1. If you mix American and Europeans server into 1, then people would have lag. Yes, and your internet connection wouldn't help you a bit, except if MAIN server is in European and you are in Europa, or vice versa. You would enjoy playing with 350-600 ms lag all the time whenever you log in? I don't think so.

2. People like to play in different servers even if it gives them -5 ms lag, but hey, they can "see" the difference.

It's a smart idea, would bring feeling like "WOW, am I in America district" while you are in main server, but oh well.

This is coming from an European player who mostly plays in EE1, but switch to ID1 or AD-x if guilds need or if I want to see more people

It's dead , try doing anything with ppl, if you're the kind of player that buys a MMO, it's because you want to do stuff with people not some dumb (less dumb than some players) henchies and heroes. I admit that heroes allow you to do everything at any moment, but it's not the same feeling.
I miss the old times when 8 people gathered to kick the darknessses ass in TOPK. I miss the time when you needed 8 players to do some missions.
You can't chat, have fun, laugh with bots. Players are the base of any MMO.
And GW is missing that nowadays.
And for people who didn't get my point before, i used the chinese and indians as an example. they constitute half of worlds population. If gw was free i think they would constitute the main source of new players.

the difference with lag is so minimal, and it would probably be cheaper for Anet to maintain the game on less servers. I bet this would eventually happen in GW's 8th year or so.

Making it free to play is a terrible idea. It is rather cheap right now for trilogy ($30USD or so) ... if you count the gameplay value and the platinum game status compared to free grindfest MMORPGs there's no reason someone shouldn't shell out
