Hello,
I had always wondered how Guild Wars is as a RPG. I'm the type that hate getting into something very late but once I seen that GW2 is coming out soon, and read about it, and just had to start Guild Wars for when GW2 gets released. I am currently playing the Trial but soon I will either be getting the Trilogy Edition or the Collectors Edition. My worry is also nobody being around while I'm starting fresh. Anybody have advice for me to either which one to buy, not start GW1 and wait for GW2, or any other advice/statements?
P.S happy to be in the GW community and hopefully I meet alot of friendly faces.
New Guy.

start with prophecies, it's "the easiest" out of them all in my honest opinion, and just mess about till you get used to the mechanics. It's also the most pretty :3

Hi Rica,
Welcome to the GW community.
The game is cheap enough to buy nowadays I think it is worth it for you, whilst the game is not as busy as it used to be, I am pretty sure the new update will lure some players back.
There are still plenty of players out there, either going for HOM or too addicted to let go when they have finished everything
I still enjoy the game and am sure there must be others like me out there.
If you need a hand with anything just pm me in game. IGN Ben D goat
Good luck and above all have fun.

Hi xRicaNMannYx:
Welcome to Guild Wars.
There are many guild able to aid you but if you need any help send me a whisper my IGN (In game name) is Mama Pacha.
I am sure that if you ask for a guild anyone here or in game will send you a invite.
My advice is to start with Factions and to buy the Collectors Edition since it already includes Eye of the north.
From there make 1 character of each profession and see which one you enjoy the most that way you try them all.
Best of luck and enjoy the game.

Just for the record, aside from the story and looks GW2 and GW have virtually nothing in common, pretty much every aspect of the game-play is different.

To clear up the edition thing:
GW has 3 standalone campaigns: Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall. There's also an expansion called Eye Of The North that requires at least one of the campaigns to play.
Each of the three campaigns is available separately in various individual editions: standard edition, collector's edition, special edition, Game Of The Year edition etc. Or you can just get all three campaigns together in the Trilogy. There's also a Complete Collection which is the Trilogy + EotN, i.e. everything.
So the trilogy will offer you far more of the game than any collector's edition will. But whatever you end up purchasing, I recommend starting with Prophecies; it's the first chronologically, and has the easiest learning curve of the three.

When you start in Nightfall you will have very fast access to heroes (customized henchmen) which are very helpful when there are not many players available to help you with quests and missions. Downside is that heroes need better skills, weapons, runes, etc to make them really good and that cant be a problem for new players (they start with allmost nothing unlocked and 0 money).
When you start in Factions you will be level 20 really fast (rewards often give you much xp and money). Factions also has very nice collectors, who can give you decent weapons for your heroes (but Factions itself doesnt have much heroes).
When you are level 20 with max armor, good weapons, decent heroes, etc, playing Prophecies will be much more fun (at least that is my opinion nowadays).
I also suggest you join a guild that is willing to help you (let them know you are a new player).
And make sure that you have guildwars wiki in your favorites... it contains valuable info on everything you need to know; even for oldskool players like myself.

It's also the slowest campaign... when you start in Factions or Nightfall you will be level 20 much faster (and you dont have to play 70% of the game to get all attribute points).
