High res in outposts?

I have a pretty powerful computer so when I read that they were adding a option to view other people in outposts in high resolution I thought, "cool I can get a little more use out of my graphics processor".

Though when turned it on I noticed no difference what-so-ever in any textures and I'm wondering anyone else feels the same? Maybe I just overlooked something.

You have to change districts/rezone to see the change.

Erm this shouldnt be neccesary I dont think as when chnaging brightness and gamma it doesnt need to be done.

Maybe you are already at the max that GW can give you?

Perhaps I am at max. But I figured if this was something new then it would be some sort of a diffrerence. Oh well.

There's a big difference even with top of the line hardware, this is because guildwars forcefully scaled down the texture quality on other people's armor in outposts up until this patch.

Even without high end hardware, most mid range cards were completely fine for a very long time running GW with KS mod installed for high res textures in outposts.

This update was very long overdue, but I am glad its here at last.

I actually restarted my game to get the change, I set the high textures in the options, and nothing happened so I restarted and it was working.

Yeah thats what I assumed so I decided what I would do is get in front of somebody whose armor is scaled down, and then activated the high res patch, and compare the before from the after. The problem is I'm seeing no difference. So I'm wondering if maybe what each induvidual persons graphic bar is at plays a factor or not. I notice some people's armor definetely looks high res but others look low res so I don't know.

Edit: just changed outposts and it appears to be working so I suppose that settles that.

You have to restart the game for it to take effect. Or maybe just re-zone but restarting the game is a good safe net usually xD

I can see the difference and I am maxed; but it is not a huge difference. Nice that they did it.

The fact that Arenanet was keeping the graphics requirements on the game low was a nice gesture. As more of us are upgrading to newer hardware, it made sense to offer this option.

I upped my resolution to 1920x1200, but I'm still sticking with keeping the image quality/textures low.

It actually doesnt make sense at all not having the option for higher res textures from the very start because people with older hardware that cant run it can simply turn the high res textures off? Even mid range graphics gards when GW was released could easily handle the game maxed out with KS mod installed for high res textures.

Just because some people have very old hardware doesnt mean that maximum detail levels should have to be low. As long as the game works fine at lower settings on old hardware, the maximum detail can be as high as they can possibly make it without affecting performance at low settings.

I'll have to try this again, but it seemed to me to show no noticable difference, even after moving to another outpost or restarting the game itself.

Here a better comparison I just made.

1920x1080, all settings on highest setting, only difference is the new high-res texture setting.



Very noticeable.

P.S. for me, changing the setting only affects new players zoning into your zone and everyone after you rezone (i.e. the only players it doesn't affect are the ones in the same outpost as you the moment you turn it on).

Ahh, now that I know what to look for, I am seeing it. It works better on some armor skins than others. Still, all in all, a nice little feature, but I don't really see anything to get excited about here. I was hoping more for greater detail of everything in the outposts, and not just armor skins, especially when the effect is only really that great when up close and personal.

Yes it's noticeable on some armors much more than others.

In the end, it's just implemented KSmod for anyone familiar with it. I've had KSmod for years and if I go back to low textures now it's just horrible. You'll probably have the same feeling if you turn off high-res textures in a few months.

It's most noticeable on 'old' armor because the armor from Nightfall and EotN are pretty detailed already and even look good at low res.

Try looking at some Prophecies Monk Tat armor at low and high res, the difference is very obvious.

When I turned this feature on I noticed it Immediately. I have 12 Gigs ram windows vista 64 bit and Geforce 470 etc. It only effects other peoples armor appearances like everyone has said above. If you run multiple clients on the same IP this feature could create some lag if the servers are under a load.

Another one that shows the difference is Warrior Obsidian armor. Like the Ele above, the low rez Warrior Obsidian looks like a pile of corroded crap.
